RAV4 exterior mods: grille lights, blackout, exhaust tips, and more

The weekend mods that change the look the most, what they cost, and what real owners learned doing them.

You can make a RAV4 look a lot more expensive in a weekend. Amber grille lights, a chrome delete, black exhaust tips, and tint do most of the work, and most of them cost under $150. This guide pulls together what real owners used, what it cost, and what they'd do differently.

Raptor-style grille lights

The row of small amber lights across the grille shows up on most of the owner builds we studied. There are two ways to do it.

FACTOR4 RAV4 Grille Lights

$129.95The clean way

Replaces the upper grille pieces, so there's no drilling or cutting, and it takes about 30 minutes. You can put the car back to stock any time.

  • Fits the gas, hybrid, and Prime RAV4 from 2019 to 2025.
  • Doesn't fit the Adventure or TRD Off-Road, which have a different grille. Check with FACTOR4 before ordering for a Woodland too.
  • The LED modules pull out, and spare sets in amber, yellow, or white are $45. Made in Colorado.
  • Two of the owner builds we studied used this exact kit.

Budget lights from Amazon

About $25The cheap way

Generic amber grille lights push into the grille, but you need to buy mounting holsters separately (one owner found them on Etsy), or you'll have nothing to hold the lights in place.

Wiring tip: don't wire grille lights straight to the battery, where they can slowly drain it. Owners ran theirs through a switch panel, or through a relay so they only come on with the car's lights. And check your state's rules on amber lights in front before you drive with them on.

Blacking out the chrome and emblems

Before you start, check your trim. An XSE already comes with black badges, a black roof, black mirrors, and black wheels, so most of the work is done for you. On other trims, these are the ways to do it, from least to most permanent.

Plasti DipA can or twoPeels off laterEmblems
Vinyl wrapA roll of matte or gloss blackPeels off, but takes care to do wellWindow trim, chrome strips, the roof

Exhaust tips

A black exhaust tip is purely cosmetic, but it's cheap and makes the back end look more finished. Owners used two kinds:

Neither changes the sound or performance.

More easy mods

Mud flaps

$119.99 RokBlokz
  • RokBlokz makes them for the 5th gen LE, XLE, Limited, and Hybrid, in two sizes and about a dozen colors.
  • They use the factory mud guard holes. If your car never had Toyota's guards, you'll drill a couple of holes in the rear bumper plastic.
  • Toyota's own mud guards are the other choice. One owner tried a cheaper Amazon set first and sent it back.

TRD-style grille badge

About $11

A small striped badge for the grille, one owner's "RAV4 starter pack." It sits behind the radar cover, and owners say the sensors still work.

Window tint

  • The dark back windows on a RAV4 are tinted glass from the factory, so the front windows are the ones that look different. One installer talked an owner down to 30% so he could still see out the back.
  • Owners recommend ceramic tint for heat rejection and long life.
  • Tint laws are strict on the front side windows in many states. In Oregon, for example, the film itself has to let through 50% of light. Check your state's law before you pick a number.

Fog lights on an LE

About $50 kit plus lights

The LE comes with blank covers where fog lights would go and no wiring. A kit from eBay for about $50 brings the covers, the wiring, and the switch, and there's already an empty switch spot by the steering wheel. One owner says the lights in the kit are poor, so he put Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro lights in it for about $200.

Hood struts

About $29

Gas struts that hold the hood up on its own, instead of the prop rod. A cheap fix owners love.

Thinking about a lift? Check the hybrid first

Most lift kits don't fit the RAV4 Hybrid. Here's what we found:

KitPriceFits the hybrid?
Torq Engineering 2-inch$399Yes, 2019 to 2026, FWD, AWD, and hybrid
Traxda 902031, 2-inchAbout $799 to $825Yes, made for the 2021 to 2024 hybrid and Prime
Rough Country 73131, 2.5-inch$649.95No hybrids, Prime, TRD, or Adventure
ReadyLIFT 2.0-inch SSTNot checkedNot with Torque Vectoring AWD or a factory lift
LP Aventure$854Only fits 2013 to 2018

Torq recommends a shop install, and says to budget for an alignment, a headlight re-aim, and recalibrating the safety cameras afterward.

Buddy's take: where to start

Grille lights first. The FACTOR4 kit is the biggest change for the money, it's reversible, and it takes half an hour.

Then tint and a chrome delete. The owners of one base LE build that did all three say it now looks like a really expensive RAV4.

Skip anything permanent at first, like cutting the grille for a light bar. One owner who did it says on camera he wouldn't recommend it.

Real builds we learned from

Still to come

Headlight upgrades, side steps, light bars and ditch lights, and step-by-step how-tos with our own photos are next.
