RAV4 overland build on a budget: what to buy first, and what it costs

You want to take your RAV4 down forest roads and camp, without spending 4Runner money. Here's the order I'd buy things in, what each step costs, and what Toyota's limits are.

So on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, gas, Hybrid or Prime, I'd buy all-terrain tires first, then a get-unstuck kit and a full-size spare, then a front skid plate. Then a roof rack, only if your gear won't fit inside, and a lift last or not at all. And on the gas Adventure and TRD Off-Road, Front Runner's Slimline II kit for those trims costs $1,199 and needs two holes drilled into each factory roof rail.

Now no RAV4 from 2019 to 2026 has a factory recovery point, so the solid pull point is a 2-inch hitch with a rated shackle mount. And for the 2026 RAV4, no skid plate or platform rack is listed yet as of October 15, 2026. The 2026 Woodland already comes with all-terrain tires, crossbars and a 2-inch hitch.

Quick picks

The order I'd build a RAV4 for overlanding

So a RAV4 off pavement usually gets stuck or cuts a tire long before the RAV4 breaks anything. So the cheap gear that gets you home comes before the armor.

  1. All-terrain tires come first. Every tester in my RAV4 off-road guide credits the tires. My all-terrain tire picks run about $195 to $320 a tire, so about $800 to $1,300 for four.
  2. A get-unstuck kit and a full-size spare come second. No 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has a factory recovery point, and the factory spare is a small temporary tire. So a flat on a gravel road far from a tire shop is the likeliest way a trip ends early.
  3. A front skid plate comes third. The oil pan and the front of the transmission sit right behind the front bumper. And the front bumper is the first place every tester scraped.
  4. A roof rack comes fourth, and only if your gear won't fit inside. A loaded platform rack costs real gas mileage, and my roof racks guide has the numbers. A pair of crossbars may be all you need.
  5. A lift comes last, or not at all. A 2-inch lift raises the body but not the axles. And the Hybrid, the Prime, and the gas Adventure, TRD Off-Road and Limited need a kit that names their trim. My RAV4 lift kits guide goes through which kits fit which trim.

And owners back this order up. Pacific Roamer camps in a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium, and says the stock 8 inches of clearance and the all-plastic underside mean constant brush dragging. Pacific Roamer scraped bumpers and nearly got high-centered on easy terrain, and recommends skid plates for regular trail use. And a 2021 RAV4 owner on WA7JNJ Radio made the skid plate one of his first upgrades. He knew someone who scraped their oil pan and got stranded up a mountain road.

What a budget RAV4 overland build costs, step by step

So here's the running cost of a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 build in that order. Every price was checked October 15, 2026.

StepWhat to buyCost
1Four all-terrain tires in the stock size or one size up, from my all-terrain tire picksAbout $800 to $1,300 (checked Oct 15, 2026)
2A full-size spare on a used factory 17-inch wheel. The link is an eBay search for a 2019 RAV4 17-inch factory wheel, and prices vary by seller. The search also shows wheels for older RAV4s, so pick a listing that says 2019 to 2025.About $400 to $600. Factory 17-inch alloy wheels were listed at about $180 to $250 on eBay, and a fifth tire to match your other four is $195 to $320 from my picks, plus mounting (checked Oct 15, 2026).
2VIAIR 88P portable compressor$88.36 at VIAIR (checked Oct 15, 2026)
2MAXTRAX MKII traction boards, a pair$279.99 at MAXTRAX USA, in stock (checked Oct 15, 2026)
2Curt 13615 2-inch hitch, for 2019 to 2025$279.95 list on Curt's site (checked Oct 15, 2026)
2Factor 55 HitchLink 2.0 shackle mount$98 at Factor 55 (checked Oct 15, 2026)
3LP Aventure front skid plate$285 at LP Aventure, in stock (checked Oct 15, 2026)
4Toyota crossbars (PT278-42192 for the low-profile rails, PT278-42191 for the Adventure), or a Slimline II platform$174 for either crossbar set at Toyota Parts Deal, or $1,199 for the Slimline II (checked Oct 15, 2026)
5A lift, from my lift kits guideOptional

So without a platform rack or a lift, the build comes to about $2,400 to $3,100 with crossbars. And with the Slimline II instead of crossbars, it's about $3,400 to $4,100. So ultimately, the tires and the get-unstuck gear are where most of the money goes, and the rack and a lift are where the price jumps.

RAV4 skid plates: what's under there and what to protect first

So no 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has a full skid plate from the factory. Basically, a skid plate is a metal plate that bolts under the car, so a rock hits the plate instead of the oil pan.

Now the first plate to add is the front one, under the engine and transmission. The oil pan and the front of the transmission sit right behind the front bumper, which is the first spot testers scraped. And on a gas RAV4, a gas tank plate is the next one to add.

Rival 4x4 aluminum gas tank skid plate 2333.9535.15/32-inch aluminum, 15 lb2019 to 2025 gas RAV4. Rival says it "Does not fit Hybrid."$149 at Underdog Motorsports, out of stock and on pre-order (checked Oct 15, 2026)

Something to note is that a Hybrid or Prime owner needs to check skid plate fit more carefully. Rival's tank plate rules out the Hybrid, and LP Aventure doesn't say either way. So on a Hybrid or Prime, I'd ask LP Aventure before ordering. And no maker lists a skid plate for the rear electric motor on the Hybrid or Prime.

Now one owner on WA7JNJ Radio put the LP Aventure front plate on his 2021 RAV4 in the driveway with a helper. He needed a 17 mm socket that the instructions didn't mention. And he had to take off the passenger-side access panel to reach the front bolt.

And if you add a bumper guard, keep in mind Toyota's 2026 manual lists a bumper protector among the things that can upset the rear radar sensors. So after fitting a bumper guard, check for sensor and radar warnings. My PCS and radar cruise unavailable guide explains those warnings. And my off-road guide has more on the TRD steel plate.

RAV4 recovery points: the towing eyelet, the hitch and the front

So a recovery point is a strong spot on the frame where you can hook a strap to pull a stuck car out.

The towing eyelet isn't a recovery point

Basically, some RAV4s have a screw-in towing eyelet. Toyota's manuals say the eyelet is for emergency towing only, on "hard surfaced roads for short distances at under 18 mph," with someone steering and braking. So the towing eyelet isn't made for yanking a stuck RAV4 out of mud. And not every RAV4 has the towing eyelet.

Now Toyota's 2019 to 2026 owner's manuals for the gas RAV4 and the Hybrid list the towing eyelet only "for models made in Japan." Toyota says the country your RAV4 was built in is printed on the Certification Regulation Label. Basically, the first character of your VIN shows it too: J is Japan, 2 is Canada, and 4 or 5 is the US. And owners back this up. One owner of a Japan-built 2021 RAV4 Prime found the eyelet in the cargo area tool tray. The eyelet screwed in behind a pop-off cover on either side of the front bumper. And a Canadian-built 2019 RAV4 had no opening for the eyelet.

The hitch is your solid rear pull point

So every 2019 to 2025 RAV4 takes a bolt-on 2-inch hitch, and the 2026 Woodland has a 2-inch hitch from the factory. My hitch install guide has the hitch for each year. And with a shackle mount in the receiver, the hitch is the only solid rear pull point most RAV4 owners have.

The Factor 55 HitchLink 2.0 is $98 at Factor 55 (checked Oct 15, 2026). Factor 55 rates the HitchLink at 9,500 lb, and the HitchLink takes a 3/4-inch screw-pin shackle or a soft shackle. Basically, a shackle is the U-shaped link the strap hooks onto.

But keep in mind the weak link is the hitch, not the HitchLink. Factor 55 says to "Never exceed factory receiver hitch pull rating," use a steel 5/8-inch hitch pin, and pull straight in line. And Curt doesn't publish a recovery rating for the RAV4 hitch, only towing ratings. So pull gently with a kinetic rope or strap, pull straight, and keep people well clear.

The front of a RAV4 has no rated recovery point

Now as of October 15, 2026, no maker lists a rated bolt-on front recovery point for the 2019 to 2026 RAV4. And the LP Aventure bumper guard isn't sold as a recovery point. So for the front, the plan is traction boards and a shovel, not a strap.

The get-unstuck kit, instead of a winch

Something to note is that Toyota doesn't give a lower tire pressure for dirt. Pacific Roamer rarely goes below 30 psi on dirt, and my all-terrain tires guide covers pressure. So the compressor is what lets you air back up before the highway.

A full-size spare in the RAV4's spare tire well

So every 2019 to 2025 RAV4, gas, Hybrid and Prime, came with a temporary spare. Toyota's manuals list a 17-inch T165/80 temporary spare on the 17- and 18-inch gas and Hybrid trims, and an 18-inch T165/90 one on the 19-inch trims and the Prime. A temporary spare says "TEMPORARY USE ONLY" on the sidewall and has a speed limit. And Toyota's manual says the compact spare can upset the driver assists.

Now the good news is that a factory-size 17-inch full-size spare fits in the well. Alex on Autos put a factory 17-inch alloy wheel and a matching tire into a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid's spare well. The full-size spare fit under the same hold-down, and the jack kit still fit.

And UK owners on the Toyota Owners Club say the same about their 2019 RAV4s. The full-size spare fits "with no room to spare," after you take out the foam and a small rubber packer. One UK owner says an 18-inch full-size spare also fits.

But it isn't confirmed whether a taller 245/65R17 or the TRD Off-Road's 225/60R18 fits under the floor. And it isn't confirmed whether any full-size spare fits the Prime's well, since the Prime uses an 18-inch temporary spare and has a higher cargo floor.

And keep in mind Toyota says to run four tires of the same size and tread. So your full-size spare should match the other four, and ideally go into the tire rotation as a fifth tire. And if you go to a taller all-terrain, the factory spare won't match at all. My all-terrain tires guide covers that.

Now a hitch swing-out carrier is the other place a spare can go. The RIGd UltraSwing is C$3,049 at Krave Automotive, a Canadian store, on pre-order (checked Oct 15, 2026). The UltraSwing also takes up the hitch. And a spare on the roof eats into the 176.4 lb roof limit. So for a budget build, the factory well is the answer.

Front Runner Slimline II on the RAV4 Adventure and TRD Off-Road

So the gas Adventure and TRD Off-Road have taller, raised roof rails, and a lot of "fits RAV4" racks don't fit the Adventure's and TRD Off-Road's rails. Front Runner makes two different Slimline II kits for the RAV4, and the right one depends on your trim. Neither Slimline II kit is listed for the LE.

Which Slimline II kit fits your RAV4

KitFitsDrillingInstalled weightPrice
Slimline II KRTR005T, for the Adventure and TRD Off-RoadFront Runner says KRTR005T is "suitable for only RAV4 Adventure and TRD models.""Drilling is required for installation."63.96 lb$1,199, in stock at Dometic (checked Oct 15, 2026)
Slimline II KRTR004T, for the other trims except the LEFront Runner says KRTR004T is "not suitable for Rav4 Adventure, TRD or LE models."None. It uses the existing mounting points.54.8 lb$1,199 at Dometic, and $1,199 at SDHQ (checked Oct 15, 2026)

Both kits use the same tray, about 49 by 53.5 inches and 2 inches tall, in aluminum, with a wind deflector. Front Runner doesn't publish a load rating for either kit. And Front Runner's own fitting sheet says to go by the vehicle maker's roof rating, which on a RAV4 is 176.4 lb.

Now Dometic, which sells Front Runner racks, lists KRTR005T for 2019 to current. The Adventure was sold from 2019 to 2024, and the TRD Off-Road from 2020 to 2024, so KRTR005T covers every year of both.

But neither kit names the Woodland. The 2023 to 2025 Hybrid Woodland has raised rails like the Adventure, but that doesn't mean KRTR005T fits. So on a Woodland, I'd ask Front Runner first. And if your RAV4 has the panoramic glass roof, my roof racks guide explains why the Slimline II leaves the glass on vent only.

What the drilling on the Adventure and TRD Off-Road actually is

So the big worry with KRTR005T is drilling the roof and getting leaks or rust. But Front Runner's fitting sheet, FATR002, shows the holes go into the factory roof rail, not the roof itself. Here are Front Runner's steps in plain words:

  1. Pop off the roof rail caps.
  2. Bolt each foot rail to the factory rail through the first and fourth holes, then mark the rear hole.
  3. Drill a 5 mm pilot hole in the factory raised roof rail, then open it up with a 12 mm drill bit. Do this on both sides.
  4. Set an M6 jack nut in each new hole with the supplied tool. Basically, a jack nut is a threaded insert that gives a bolt something to grip inside the hollow rail.
  5. Bolt the foot rails down, cap the bolts, and apply anti-rust to the holes.

So KRTR005T needs two holes per side in the factory rail. The holes are a permanent change, but they're in the rail, not the roof skin. And one RAV4World poster said the headliner has to come down to fit the jack nuts, but Front Runner's sheet doesn't mention the headliner, so that isn't confirmed.

And you can read the full FATR002 fitting sheet before you buy.

What the install is really like on a TRD Off-Road

So The Mr. Kidd Network installed KRTR005T on a 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road, and his video is below. The supplied jack nut tool didn't work for him. The supplied bolt was too long, so the bolt bottomed out inside the rail and the jack nut wouldn't set. And the tool bent.

His fix was smaller jack nuts and shorter screws from a hardware store, and holding the tool with a wrench. He also says Front Runner sends only the exact parts, with no spares. But after about a month and a half, he said the rack was "really secure." And with mounts for a water pack, a box and traction boards, he spent "two grand on maybe everything."

Slimline II wind noise on a RAV4

Now there's no measured noise test of a Slimline II on a RAV4. But owners on RAV4World report this:

So keep the wind deflector on. And my road noise guide covers crossbar whistle in general.

Is the Slimline II worth it on an Adventure or TRD Off-Road?

So for the Adventure and TRD Off-Road, KRTR005T is one of the few full platforms made for those raised rails. And the drilling is two small holes per rail. But KRTR005T costs $1,199 and about 64 lb of the 176.4 lb roof limit, which leaves about 112 lb for gear. My rooftop tent math shows what that means for a tent.

And if you don't need a platform for a tent, traction boards or a light bar, the cheaper answer is Toyota's Adventure crossbars. Toyota's PT278-42191 Adventure crossbars are $174 at Toyota Parts Deal (checked Oct 15, 2026). On a TRD Off-Road, give the dealer your VIN first. So ultimately, crossbars and a soft roof bag carry the same gear for a fraction of the cost and weight.

The weight limits for a RAV4 overland build

So there are two limits, and the whole build counts against them, not just the roof.

Here's how fast it adds up. Two adults are about 350 lb. The Slimline II is 64 lb, and a full-size spare weighs more than the temporary one. Then add a fridge, water, the dog and the gear. LP Aventure doesn't publish weights for most of its armor, so leave room for that too. My towing guide has the full payload math, including a trailer.

Building a 2026 RAV4 for overlanding

So the 2026 Woodland, Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid, already comes with all-terrain tires, crossbars on raised rails and a 2-inch hitch. The 2026 Woodland has no skid plates and no recovery points. So a 2026 Woodland owner's first buys are the step 2 get-unstuck kit and a HitchLink for the factory hitch.

Now as of October 15, 2026, the 2026 aftermarket hasn't caught up. No 2026 skid plate is listed, LP Aventure's plate still says 2019 to 2025, and Front Runner has no 2026 kit. My hitch install guide covers a hitch for the other 2026 trims.

Videos worth watching for a RAV4 overland build

So these three videos show a full-size spare going into the well, a Slimline II install on a TRD Off-Road, and an LP Aventure skid plate install.

2019-2020 Toyota RAV4 FULL Size Spare | Will It Fit?, from Alex on Autos, October 2019, 7 minutes.

Alex Dykes puts a factory 17-inch wheel and a matching tire into a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid's spare well.

  • The fit: The full-size spare fits under the same hold-down, and the jack kit still fits.
  • The catch: The cargo floor loses its lower position, and the cargo cover can't be stored under the floor.
  • The cost: About $60 for a used wheel, $120 for the tire and $20 to mount it, in 2019.
  • What Toyota says: Toyota North America told him a full-size spare is "not supported," but he keeps one for rural flats.
FrontRunner Slimline Install and Review, 2020 Rav4 TRD, from The Mr. Kidd Network, July 2023, 23 minutes.

An owner installs the Slimline II KRTR005T on a 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-Road, including the drilling.

  • The jack nuts: The supplied bolt bottomed out in the rail, and shorter screws and smaller jack nuts from a hardware store fixed it.
  • The parts: Front Runner sends only the exact parts, with no spares.
  • Later: After about six weeks, he called the rack "really secure." With water pack, box and traction board mounts, he spent about $2,000 all in.
Rav4 LP Aventure Skid Plate Install (2019-2024), from WA7JNJ Radio, June 2024, 16 minutes.

A driveway install of the LP Aventure front skid plate on a 2021 RAV4, with a helper.

  • The tools: He needed a 17 mm socket the instructions didn't list.
  • The tricky bolt: He took off the passenger-side access panel to reach the front bolt.
  • Why he bought it first: People he knew had holed an oil pan on mountain roads.

Buddy's take

So ultimately, if you're building a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 on a budget, I'd spend the first money on all-terrain tires, a full-size spare and a get-unstuck kit. Those three are what get you home. Then I'd add the LP Aventure front skid plate, and on a Hybrid or Prime I'd ask LP Aventure about fit first.

And on a gas Adventure or TRD Off-Road, the Slimline II KRTR005T is a solid platform if you really need one. And the drilling goes into the rail, not the roof. But crossbars carry most weekend gear for $174. So hopefully this helps you build a RAV4 that gets you out there and back without paying for things you don't need yet.
