Rooftop tents for the RAV4: what fits under the weight limit

The RAV4's roof can't carry much, so the tent's weight decides almost everything.

A rooftop tent can work on a RAV4, but only a light one. The roof's driving limit is reported at 176 pounds, and that has to cover the rack and the tent together. Toyota's own crossbars are only rated for 100 pounds, so you'll need a platform rack too. Here are the tents light enough to make it work.

Quick picks

Do the math first

Before you shop for a tent, add up what will sit on the roof while you drive. The total has to stay under the RAV4's driving limit, which owner's manuals for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 are reported to list at 176 pounds. Check the manual for your year to be sure.

Thule Foothill122 lb162 lbAbout 14 lb
iKamper Skycamp 3.0 Mini125 lb165 lbAbout 11 lb

The Greenlane rack weighs 40 pounds, according to Greenlane. If you choose a different rack, swap in its weight. And remember the "room left" has to cover anything you leave packed inside the folded tent, like pillows and bedding.

Toyota's crossbars won't do it. They're rated for 100 pounds, and every tent here weighs more than that on its own. A rooftop tent on a RAV4 needs a platform rack. See our roof rack guide for the ones that work, including with the panoramic roof.

The tents

Roofnest Meadowlark

$1,595Lightest

The lightest of the bunch at 90 pounds, which leaves the most room under the RAV4's limit.

  • A soft-shell tent that sleeps two, with a sleeping area of 80 by 43 inches and 36 inches of headroom.
  • Folded, it's 47 by 44 inches and 12 inches tall.
  • Comes with a built-in 2.5-inch foam mattress and a two-year warranty.
  • Your crossbars can be no more than 35 inches apart, so check that against your rack.

Thule Foothill

$1,699.95 listRoom for bikes

The space saver. It folds into a long, narrow shape that covers only half the roof, so you can still carry bikes or a cargo box beside it.

  • A soft-shell tent for two, weighing 122 pounds.
  • Folded, it's 83 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 9.5 inches tall.
  • Thule rates it for 660 pounds parked.
  • It's often on sale. We've seen it at $1,360. Thule now also sells a newer Foothill 2, but we couldn't find its weight yet.
  • Careful: anything you put beside it counts toward the same driving limit, and this tent only leaves about 14 pounds of room.

iKamper Skycamp 3.0 Mini

$3,000 to $4,295Hard shell

The premium hard shell. A hard shell opens quickly, since there's no cover to unzip and pack away.

  • Sleeps one or two, weighing 125 pounds, with a sleeping area of 82.75 by 51.25 inches.
  • It's 13.5 inches tall folded and 48 inches tall open.
  • Works with crossbars spaced 22 to 39 inches apart.
  • Price varies a lot. iKamper's own site shows $3,000 on sale, and REI lists $4,295.

Is it safe to sleep up there?

Yes, as long as the rack can handle it. When you're parked, the roof carries much more than when you're driving, because the weight is sitting still. That parked number comes from your rack maker, and it has to cover the tent, the people in it, and their bedding. For example, Spider rates its panoramic-roof rack for 500 pounds parked. Ask your rack maker for their number before your first night.

Buddy's take

Think hard before going rooftop on a RAV4. Even the cheapest pairing here, the Spider rack and the Meadowlark, costs about $2,500, and you'll still be close to the weight limit with something big sitting up in the wind. Sleeping inside with a platform is cheaper and works in any weather. See our car camping guide.

If you want a rooftop tent anyway, the Roofnest Meadowlark is the one that leaves you real breathing room under the limit.

Where this comes from
  • Tent weights, sizes, and prices from each maker's own product pages, checked October 7, 2026: Roofnest, Thule, and iKamper, plus REI for the Skycamp's list price.
  • Rack weights and ratings from Greenlane, Spider, and Toyota.
  • The 176-pound roof limit is reported from the 2019 to 2025 owner's manuals by AutoRoamer, and matches the 80 kilograms on Toyota Europe's crossbar instructions.
  • Prices change often. Check the maker's site before you buy. RAV Buddy doesn't earn anything from these links.
