Sleeping in the back of a RAV4: the answer for each year
So the RAV4's back seats fold down to make one long floor from the hatch to the back of the front seats. And that floor is where you sleep. But the folded seatbacks sit higher than the cargo floor, so the bed isn't level. Here's how that plays out for each year.
- 2019 to 2025 gas and Hybrid RAV4: One adult up to about 6 feet lies straight, and two adults fit on a full-width platform. The folded floor slopes up toward the front seats by about 10 degrees, so most owners level the bed.
- 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime (sold as the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2025): The Prime's back seats fold the same way, but kit makers say the Prime's cargo floor is shaped differently and may sit higher. So a lot of platforms are made in a separate Prime version, and some 2019 to 2025 kits need trimming to fit a Prime.
- 2026 RAV4 Hybrid: Toyota redesigned the rear seatback so the 2026 seatback folds flatter, with a slope of about 5 degrees instead of 10. But the 2026's folded floor still slopes a little toward the hatch, and a 2026 owner still slid down overnight. A 72-inch mattress fits, and most 2019 to 2025 platforms don't fit a 2026.
- 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid: No owner has published a sleep report for the 2026 Plug-in Hybrid. And Toyota's 2026 cargo measurements on toyota.com cover the 2026 Hybrid only.
RAV4 cargo measurements for sleeping, by year
So Toyota publishes cargo numbers with the back seats up, but never a length with the back seats folded. And that folded length is the number that matters for sleeping. So the sleeping lengths below come from platform makers, mattress makers and owners. The widths and the tallest point come from Toyota.
| RAV4 years and model | Sleeping length, back seats folded | Floor slope with back seats folded | Floor width between the rear wheel wells | Widest point of the cargo area | Tallest point of the cargo area (Toyota) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2025 gas and Hybrid | About 72 to 78 inches, depending on how far forward the front seats go | About 10 degrees, rising toward the front | 39.4 inches | 59.0 inches | 36.6 inches |
| 2021 to 2025 Prime and 2025 Plug-in Hybrid | No maker publishes a separate Prime length | No published number. Kit makers say the Prime's cargo floor is shaped differently. | 39.4 inches | 59.0 inches | Toyota doesn't list one for the Prime |
| 2026 Hybrid | About 72 to 74 inches | About 5 degrees, still rising toward the front | 39.4 inches | 60.5 inches | 36.7 inches |
| 2026 Plug-in Hybrid | No published number | No published number | No published number | No published number | No published number |
So the length you get depends on the bed you put in. In a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, Wheels & Feels says its platform gives about 78 inches with the front seats moved all the way forward. Havnby's mattress for 2019 to 2025 is 76.8 inches long. An Instructables builder's platform in a Hybrid is 75 inches, and BamBeds' platform is 73 inches plus a 14-inch extension. And Deepsleep says one of its 72-inch pads fits in a 2019 or newer RAV4.
And for the 2026, a 72-inch Exped mattress fit in one owner's 2026 Woodland. Havnby's 2026 mattress is 73.6 inches long. So the 2026 bed may be a little shorter than the 2019 to 2025 bed, but no one has measured both to confirm it.
Something to note is that the slope numbers come from Best Car Web. Best Car Web is a Japanese car magazine, and it compared the old and new RAV4 side by side. Havnby, which sells a mattress for the 2026, describes a 13-degree incline instead. But Best Car Web has nothing to sell and showed both cars in photos, so I go by Best Car Web's 10 and 5 degrees.
One adult or two
So on the bare floor, the narrowest spot is between the rear wheel wells, at 39.4 inches. That's tight for two adults. But a platform sits above the wheel wells, where the cargo area is wider, so full-width platforms are about 52 to 54 inches wide. One owner who is 6'3" sleeps next to their wife on a 41.3-inch-wide Exped MegaMat Duo on their own platform in a 2019 RAV4.
And if you need one back seat for a passenger or gear, the RAV4's back seat splits 60/40. So you can fold one side and leave the other side up. The BamBeds Solo, the Hele Box Solo and Compass Camper's 60/40 extension are all made for that.
Headroom
Keep in mind that every inch of platform comes out of your headroom. Toyota lists 36.6 inches at the tallest point of the 2019 to 2025 cargo area and 36.7 inches on the 2026. Owners who built their platform legs too tall say they lost a lot of headroom. So I'd keep a platform about 6 to 9 inches tall. And one 2026 Woodland owner says they had room to sit up on a mattress, more than in a 2025 they'd tried.
Gas vs Hybrid vs Prime
So on paper, the 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid have the same cargo area. But the RAV4 Hybrid's traction battery, the big battery that helps drive the car, sits under the back seat. So the Hybrid's back seat cushion is thinner. Basically, that means a platform's support legs may need to be cut a little differently for a Hybrid.
The 2021 to 2025 Prime is the one that's really different. Kit makers say the Prime's cargo floor is shaped differently and may sit higher, and BamBeds says its 2019 to 2025 platform needs trimming to fit a Prime. So look for a Prime version of any kit. And something to note is that the Prime XSE with the Premium Package has a 120-volt, 1,500-watt outlet in the cargo area. That outlet is an option on the 2025 Plug-in Hybrid XSE. And Toyota lists the same outlet on the 2026 Woodland.
And if your RAV4 has the JBL sound system, there's a subwoofer in the cargo area. So BamBeds sells separate JBL and non-JBL versions, and so does Wheels & Feels for the Prime. My 2025 RAV4 Hybrid XSE has the JBL system, so I'd need BamBeds' JBL version. You can check which trims have JBL in my RAV4 trims guide.
Sleeping in a RAV4 if you're 6 feet or taller
So up to about 6 feet, you can lie straight in a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. A Toyota salesperson who is 6 feet to 6'1" lay straight on the bare folded floor of a 2020 RAV4 and still had room to stretch. And Matt Perillo, who is 6'3", sleeps on a 72-inch mattress over their own platform in a 2019. Matt says the mattress is just as tall as they are.
Here's how to get the most length if you're tall.
- Slide both front seats all the way forward. Then tilt the front seatbacks forward too. That's where the extra few inches come from.
- Sleep with your head toward the front of the car. The front is the higher end, over the folded seatbacks. So if the bed isn't level, your head ends up higher than your feet.
- Use a 72-inch or longer mattress. A 72-inch mattress fits a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 and a 2026.
- If you're over about 6'2", lie slightly diagonal or add an extension. A platform extension reaches over the rear footwell, which is the floor in front of the back seats. BamBeds sells a 14-inch headboard extension, and Compass Camper's kit has a pull-out extension.
Now about sleeping diagonally. On a 52-inch-wide, 72-inch-long platform, the straight line corner to corner works out to about 89 inches. That's just arithmetic, though. The hatch leans in at the top and the wheel wells cut into the corners, so the real gain is a few inches. And a 5'9" tester for a Japanese car magazine, in the new Japanese-market RAV4, still slept slightly diagonal on a 76.8-inch mattress.
Mattresses and pads that fit a RAV4
So the cheapest way to start is a 72-inch pad straight on the folded floor, with something under the hatch end to level it. A folded blanket or a bag works. Basically, that's what one 2026 Woodland owner planned after sliding down overnight. And if you'd rather not fix the slope yourself, some mattresses are shaped for the slope.
Havnby FlatCore mattress for the RAV4
$349 to $399So the Havnby FlatCore is an air and foam mattress that's thicker at the hatch end, to cancel out the slope. And Havnby makes separate versions for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 and the 2026.
- The 2019 to 2025 version is 76.8 by 55.1 inches and 9.1 inches thick, for $349 (list price $539, checked Oct 15, 2026). Havnby lists the 2019 to 2025 version for the gas, Hybrid and plug-in hybrid RAV4.
- The 2026 version is 73.6 by 51.2 inches and 7.3 inches thick, with a built-in pump, for $399 (list price $539, checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Havnby gives a 60-day trial and a 3-year warranty.
- Keep in mind a full-width mattress takes up the whole cargo area. One 2026 owner paid nearly $600 for a Havnby mattress and then found they had no room left for their luggage.
So Luno's fit finder lists the 2019 to 2026 RAV4, and Luno's mattresses have cutouts for the wheel wells. And a "head support bridge" hangs off the front seatbacks at the head end.
- The Luno AIR Pro is 4 inches thick, splits into two halves that zip apart, and packs down to 8 by 26 inches. It's $349.99 (checked Oct 15, 2026).
- The Luno AIR Pro comes in a Compact/Mid-Size SUV size and a Full-Size SUV size. Luno's product page doesn't list which size fits the RAV4, so use Luno's fit finder before you order.
- The Luno AIR BASE is the cheaper Luno at $199.99, and the Luno AIR+FOAM Pro is the warmer one at $499.99 (both checked Oct 15, 2026).
Deepsleep Solo Mat for Toyota RAV4
$209.99 to $249.99So the Deepsleep Solo Mat is a self-inflating memory foam pad, 72 by 26 inches and 5 inches thick. Deepsleep says one fits in a 2019 or newer RAV4.
- The Deepsleep Solo Mat is $209.99 without a pump or $249.99 with one. A set of two is $409.99 or $489.99 (checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Deepsleep's page doesn't mention the 2026.
- Deepsleep's page showed both "Sold out" and "pre-order, ships within 2 weeks" on Oct 15, 2026, so check before you order.
Exped MegaMat Duo 10
About $370 to $550So the Exped MegaMat Duo isn't made for a car. But the size M is the 72-inch mattress that Matt Perillo uses in their 2019 RAV4. And a 2026 Woodland owner uses a 72-inch Exped mattress too.
- The size M is 72 by 41.3 inches and 4 inches thick, which fits two people on a platform.
- REI lists the MegaMat Duo from about $370 to $550 depending on size. REI's listing doesn't show the size M's exact price, so check REI's page for the size M.
Sleeping platforms for the RAV4
So a sleeping platform is a frame or a set of boards that makes a level bed over the folded seats. Basically, its legs stand on the cargo floor and in the rear footwell, so the bed is flat even though the floor isn't. And most platforms leave space underneath for bags.
Keep in mind that platforms are made for a specific RAV4. The table below shows which platform fits which years.
| Platform | 2019 to 2025 gas and Hybrid | 2021 to 2025 Prime | 2026 | Price (checked Oct 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hele Box Solo and Duo | Yes, and Hele has a RAV4 fit guide | Needs 72 inches of length | Needs 72 inches of length, and a 72-inch mattress fits a 2026 | Solo $399, Duo $499 |
| BamBeds for RAV4 | Yes | Needs trimming | Not listed | $699 to $1,299 |
| Wheels & Feels Camping System | Yes | Separate Prime version | Separate 2026 version | $950 to $999 |
| Compass Camper RAV4 kit | Yes | Yes | Not listed | $1,799 |
Hele Box Solo
$399, or $499 with the padSo the Hele Box is a folding aluminum platform that needs no building. And it packs into a bag that fits in the cargo area with the back seats up.
- The Solo makes a bed 72 by 24 inches, and it stands 8.75 to 14 inches tall. The Hele Box Solo needs 72 inches of length, or 66 inches in its shorter setup.
- The legs adjust in half-inch steps, so you can level the Hele Box over the slope. And two longer legs, 14 to 28 inches, stand in the rear footwell.
- The Hele Box Duo is the two-person version at $499, or $699 with the pad (checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Hele's page showed the Solo as both sold out and in stock on Oct 15, 2026, so check before you order. Hele also has a RAV4 fit guide.
BamBeds for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4
$699 to $1,299So BamBeds makes a wood platform cut for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. The BamBeds platform is 73 inches long, plus a 14-inch headboard extension for tall sleepers.
- In Baltic birch, the Solo (29 inches wide) is $699, the Full Width (52 inches wide) is $899, and the Full Width with the solo headboard is $999. The non-slip birch versions are $999 to $1,299 (checked Oct 15, 2026).
- The BamBeds platform leaves 8.6 to 9.5 inches of storage underneath.
- BamBeds sells a JBL subwoofer version and a no-subwoofer version. On a Prime, BamBeds says you'll need to trim the platform yourself. And BamBeds doesn't list the 2026 RAV4.
Wheels & Feels Camping System
$950 to $999So Wheels & Feels makes a platform with drawers in three versions. There's one for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4, one for the Prime and one for the 2026. The Wheels & Feels platform is 6 inches tall, so it keeps more headroom.
- The 2019 to 2025 version fits the gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, not the Prime. The 2019 to 2025 platform gives about 78 by 54 inches with the front seats all the way forward, for $965 to $999.
- The Prime version is shaped for the Prime's floor, with JBL and non-JBL versions, for $950 or $999.
- The 2026 version is $955, listed for the 2026 Hybrid. Wheels & Feels doesn't name the 2026 Plug-in Hybrid.
- All prices checked Oct 15, 2026.
So the Compass Camper kit is an aluminum frame with two drawers and a pull-out bed extension. Compass Camper makes the kit for the 2019 to 2025 gas, Hybrid and Prime RAV4.
- The Compass Camper kit is $1,799 (checked Oct 15, 2026), with a 5 to 6 week wait because each kit is handmade in Bend, Oregon.
- Compass Camper says the bed is over 6 feet long. The kit goes in without tools, and there's an optional 60/40 split extension.
- Compass Camper doesn't list the 2026 RAV4.
Building your own RAV4 sleeping platform
So a homemade platform costs about $120 to $250 and a weekend. And there are free plans made for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4.
- The Instructables "2019+ 5th Generation Toyota RAV4 Bed Platform": A folding plywood platform, 75 by 37.75 inches, built for a Hybrid. The build cost about $120, weighs 41.2 pounds and folds to store under the deck board, the removable panel that makes the cargo floor.
- Jess on the Wild Way's 2020 RAV4 plan: A three-piece plywood platform. Jess's build cost $235 and took 4.5 hours.
- axeman2525's folding platform for a 2020 RAV4: A YouTube build with the cut sizes and a parts list.
Now the builders above use the same basic materials. Here's what they name, with a Home Depot search link for each:
- A 4 by 8 foot sheet of 5/8 or 3/4 inch plywood (Home Depot search).
- 36-inch piano hinges (Home Depot search).
- 1x4 and 2x4 lumber for the support legs (1x4 search, 2x4 search).
- Drop pins, also called ball detent pins, to hold the pieces together (Home Depot search).
- Automotive or indoor/outdoor carpet to cover the top (Home Depot search).
- 3M Super 77 spray adhesive to glue the carpet (Home Depot search).
Here are a few things the builders learned. The 2019 to 2025 rear seats don't fold quite flat. So Matt Perillo raised the trunk section of their platform, then lifted the middle section about 1.5 inches more to get level. And Jess's DIY legs came out too long, so Jess lost headroom. After two years, the legs had loosened and the long pieces wouldn't stow with the seats up. But otherwise, a homemade platform does the job for a fraction of the price of a bought platform.
And something to note is that every 2019 to 2025 gas and Hybrid RAV4 comes with a deck board that sits in an upper or a lower position. The upper position raises the cargo floor closer to the folded seats, which shrinks the step. No owner has published how much the upper position helps, though.
Tips for sleeping in the back of a RAV4
- Fold the back seats on level ground. Toyota's manual says to fold the seatbacks only when parked on level ground, with the parking brake on and the RAV4 in P (park).
- The bed is for parked use only. Toyota's manual says not to let anyone sit on a folded seatback or in the cargo area while driving, and not to let children into the cargo area.
- Lock the seatbacks when you put them back up. Basically, the red marking on the seatback shouldn't show, and the seat belts shouldn't be trapped behind the seatback.
- Crack two windows for condensation. One 2026 Woodland owner woke to a lot of condensation. But the two windows they left open half an inch with nets had almost none.
- Plan where your gear goes. A platform or a full-width mattress eats most of the cargo area. Matt Perillo's platform takes up about 75% of their trunk, so they carry gear in a roof box.
- Running the RAV4 overnight: Toyota's Hybrid manual says to turn the hybrid system off when napping. I cover heat and power in the staying warm section of my car camping guide.
- Cold nights and where to park: My cold weather car camping guide covers sleeping bags, pads and window covers. And my stealth camping guide covers where to park overnight.

Videos: sleeping in the back of a RAV4
A 6'3" owner builds a three-part plywood platform with drawers for themselves and their wife in a 2019 RAV4.
- The build: The trunk section has two drawers. The middle section lies over the folded back seats, and a hinged part rests on a post in the rear footwell.
- Leveling: The back seats don't fold quite flat, so they raised the trunk section and lifted the middle about 1.5 inches.
- Tall sleeper: On a 72-inch Exped MegaMat Duo, they can stretch out almost all the way, and their wife fits beside them.
- Trade-off: The platform takes about 75% of the trunk, so their gear rides on the roof.
A first night in the back of a new 2026 RAV4 Woodland.
- Length: A 72-inch Exped mattress fits.
- Headroom: They had room to sit up, more than they felt in a 2025.
- The slope: They slid down overnight because the folded seats sit a bit higher than the trunk floor, so next time they'll put something under the hatch end.
- Condensation: They woke to a lot of condensation, except on the two windows left open half an inch with nets.
A 2020 RAV4 owner compares their homemade plywood platform with a Hele Box after hundreds of nights.
- Their DIY platform: About $250 and a weekend, but the legs loosened, the long pieces won't stow with the seats up, and setup is awkward.
- The Hele Box: About half the weight, packs into a bag that fits with the seats up, and set up in 6 minutes 40 seconds on their second try.
- Headroom: The Hele Box sits lower than their DIY legs, so they have more headroom.
- Cost: About the same as their DIY build. They'd add a thicker pad, and they link the Hele Box in their video description.
A Toyota salesperson folds the back seats of a 2020 RAV4 and lies down on the bare floor.
- Folding the seats: They pull the release lever up by the top of each back seat.
- Length: They're 6 feet to 6'1" and still have room to stretch out, though they usually lie a bit angled.
- Keep in mind: This is a dealer video with no mattress and no measurements.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the RAV4 makes a good car camper for one adult up to about 6 feet, and for two on a platform. The one thing to plan for is the slope.
If you just want to try sleeping in your RAV4, I'd start with a 72-inch pad and a folded blanket under the hatch end. And if you camp a lot, I'd look at a platform made for your exact year. The Hele Box needs no building, and a Wheels & Feels system adds drawers.
But if you have a Prime or a 2026, check that the kit lists your model first, since a lot of 2019 to 2025 kits need a separate version or trimming for those. So hopefully this helps you get a good night's sleep in your RAV4.
