Quick picks
Drive modes, traction control and Eco mode in winter
So I cover Snow mode, Trail mode and when to turn traction control off, by year and powertrain, in my RAV4 in snow guide. Snow mode is on the 2019 to 2025 gas AWD RAV4, as its own SNOW switch. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid AWD and the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid have a SNOW switch too. But the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and Prime have Trail mode instead. And Toyota says to turn traction control off only to rock the RAV4 free when it's stuck.
Now on a cold morning, the drive mode that matters most is Eco mode. Toyota's 2019 to 2026 manuals say Eco drive mode holds back the engine speed and the A/C compressor to "restrict heating/cooling capacity." Toyota also says Eco drive mode slows the fan in AUTO. And picking Eco drive mode turns on Eco air conditioning mode by itself, which is a climate setting that also holds back the heat. So on a frosty morning, Normal mode clears the glass faster than Eco mode. Toyota's fix is to turn up the fan, or turn off Eco drive mode or Eco air conditioning mode.
How to clear a fogged or frosted windshield fast
So Toyota's steps are the same in every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 manual, gas, Hybrid, Prime and Plug-in Hybrid.
- Press the front defroster button. It's the FRONT button, and Toyota calls the FRONT button the windshield defogger switch. The front defroster blows air at the windshield and the front side windows.
- Check the outside air and recirculate button. If the recirculate light is on, press the button to switch to outside air. Toyota says the RAV4 may switch to outside air by itself.
- Turn the fan and the temperature up. Toyota says "To defog the windshield and the side windows quickly, turn the air flow and temperature up."
- Make sure the A/C light is on. Toyota says the A/C helps clear fog, and I explain why just below.
- Press the front defroster button again once the glass is clear. The climate system goes back to your old setting.
Why the A/C light matters in winter
So the A/C isn't just for cooling. Basically, the A/C also dries the air, and dry air clears fog. Toyota says turning the A/C on "will dehumidify the air from the outlets and defog the windshield effectively." And if you turn the A/C off, Toyota says the windows "may fog up more easily."
Now keep in mind, Toyota says that once it's near 32°F, the drying may not work even with the A/C on. So well below freezing, heat and outside air do most of the work.
The recirculate setting that fogs the windows
So a lot of owners say the inside of the windshield fogs up on recirculate. And Toyota's manual agrees that "The windows may fog up if the recirculated air mode is used." Basically, recirculate keeps reusing the damp air inside the RAV4 instead of pulling in drier outside air.
But something important to note is that Toyota says the RAV4 may switch between outside air and recirculate by itself, depending on the temperature setting and the cabin temperature. And Toyota's newer manuals say the RAV4 picks recirculate by default on hot days, over 75°F with the A/C on. So on a damp or cold morning, I'd check the recirculate light first thing and press the button to switch to outside air.
AUTO mode on a cold engine
So the AUTO button runs the drying and picks the fan speed and vents for you. But Toyota says "The fan may stop for a while until warm or cool air is ready to flow." So on a cold engine, AUTO may blow nothing for a bit. The front defroster button sends the air to the glass instead.
Other things that slow down defrosting
- Things on the dash. Toyota says don't put anything on the dashboard that covers the air vents, or the defoggers can't work.
- Snow on the cowl vents. The cowl vents are the slots in front of the windshield where the fan pulls in outside air. Toyota says to clear snow off those vents so the fan works properly.
- Fog on the outside of the glass. In very humid weather, Toyota says not to use the front defroster with cold air. The temperature difference can fog the outside of the windshield. So use the wipers, or warm the air up.
- The back window and side mirrors. The rear defroster button heats the back glass and, where equipped, the outside mirrors. Toyota says the rear defroster turns off by itself after 15 minutes. I cover the rear defroster and the mirror heaters in my heated steering wheel and de-icer guide.
How defrosting works on each RAV4 powertrain
- 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 with Stop & Start. When Stop & Start shuts the engine off at a light, Toyota says the heating and drying turn off too. If the windshield fogs, Toyota says to press the front defroster button, which restarts the engine. And if the windshield keeps fogging, turn Stop & Start off with the cancel switch. I explain that switch in my auto start stop guide.
- 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and 2026 RAV4 Hybrid. EV mode drives the RAV4 Hybrid on the battery alone, and the front defroster keeps the RAV4 Hybrid out of EV mode. And in winter, Toyota says the gas engine won't shut off by itself until the engine and the cabin are warm. My RAV4 Hybrid winter mpg guide has more on that.
- 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime and 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Toyota says the gas engine starts even in EV mode when the heater is on below about 14°F. And the gas engine also starts any time you press the front defroster button. So the engine starting when you press the front defroster is by design, not a fault. I explain the plug-in side just below.
- 2026 RAV4. The climate controls are on the touchscreen, plus physical buttons. The 2026 has a MAX button, but Toyota says the MAX button "turns the fan speed to max." So the MAX button is a fan button, not a max defrost mode. The defrosting steps are the same as above.
Staying warm in a RAV4 Prime or Plug-in Hybrid without starting the engine
So in EV mode, the RAV4 Prime heats the cabin with a heat pump. Basically, a heat pump pulls heat from the outside air to warm the cabin. But Toyota says when it's cold or snowing, "heating may be less effective and warm air may not come out." And if the outside part of the heat pump frosts over, Toyota says the fan slows and the cabin gets harder to heat.
Now Toyota's fix is to run the Remote Air Conditioning System before you drive, while the RAV4 is plugged in. Toyota says if the heat pump is frosted over, remote heating starts after the heat pump defrosts. And then use the heated seats and heated steering wheel. Toyota calls the heated seats and wheel an "efficient heating device that directly warm the body using less electric power." I go through remote climate in my RAV4 plug-in home charging guide.
Also, water dripping under the RAV4 Prime after heating or A/C is normal. Toyota says the dripping isn't a malfunction.
Frozen wipers, winter washer fluid and winter wiper blades
Start with the wiper de-icer, if your RAV4 has one
So the wiper de-icer heats a strip of glass under the parked wipers. The wiper de-icer comes with the Weather Package, and some other trims have it too. I'd press the wiper de-icer button first thing and let the de-icer free the blades. My de-icer guide shows where the button is and how long the de-icer runs.
What Toyota says to do with frozen wipers
So Toyota's rule here is simple. "Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a wiper that is frozen. Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away the water immediately to prevent it from freezing." So that's warm water, not hot.
And if your RAV4 has rain-sensing wipers, turn the wiper switch out of AUTO before you scrape, so the wipers don't start on their own. My rain-sensing wipers guide shows how.
Lifting the wipers before an ice storm
So a lot of owners lift their wipers off the glass overnight before an ice storm. Keep in mind, that's common owner advice, and Toyota's manual doesn't mention leaving the wipers up overnight. But if you do lift the wipers, here's Toyota's safe way.
- 2019 to 2025 RAV4. Hold the wiper arm by its hook end, not the blade. Lift the driver side first, then the passenger side. And put the passenger side down first. Don't touch the wiper lever while the wipers are up, or they can hit the hood.
- 2026 RAV4. The 2026 has a service position. Within about 45 seconds of turning the power off, hold the wiper lever up in the mist position for about 2 seconds. The wipers move up the glass. To put the wipers back, turn the power on and use the wiper lever.
Winter washer fluid
So Toyota says to use washer fluid that suits your outside temperature. And Toyota says "Do not use soapy water or engine antifreeze instead of washer fluid." Antifreeze can streak the paint and damage the washer pump. Only water down washer fluid as far as the bottle's freezing label allows.
For example, Prestone De-Icer Windshield Washer Fluid, -27°F, 1 gallon was $17.65 at Walmart, from an outside seller, on October 15, 2026. Just pick a washer fluid rated below your coldest night.
- RAV4 Hybrid and Prime. Toyota says don't add washer fluid when the hybrid system is hot or running. Washer fluid has alcohol in it and may catch fire if it spills on the hybrid system.
- Empty tank. If the washer tank is empty, don't keep pressing the washer, or the pump can overheat. The RAV4 shows a low washer fluid message on the multi-information display, which is the screen between the gauges.
- Blocked nozzle. Toyota says don't clear a blocked washer nozzle with a pin.
Winter wiper blades for a 2019 to 2025 RAV4
So on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the driver side blade is 26 inches and the passenger side blade is 16 inches. And the rear blade is 12 inches. The front arms use a 9x3 hook.
Basically, a winter blade has a rubber cover over the frame so ice can't pack into the frame. These are the ones I'd look at.
- Driver side, 26 inch. TRICO Ice 26 inch winter blade, 35-260, $20.03 at Walmart on October 15, 2026. Walmart says the TRICO Ice comes with the adapters you need.
- Passenger side, 16 inch. TRICO Ice 16 inch winter blade, 35-160, $9.07 at Duallane on October 15, 2026.
- Rear, 12 inch. Toyota's own rear blade, 85242-72010, $16.86 at OEM Parts Online on October 15, 2026, against Toyota's $22.44 list price. Toyota's rear blade isn't a winter blade, but it's the exact fit for the rear.
Now keep in mind, enter your RAV4's year in the store's fit lookup before you order. And for a 2026 RAV4, check the blade sizes the same way. Toyota's warranty doesn't cover worn wiper blades. But Toyota does check the blades at each service visit, so ask how yours look.
Frozen doors, mirrors, the parking brake and the liftgate
Opening a frozen door
So Toyota's manual doesn't give steps for a frozen door. But mechanics give the same basic advice.
- Try every door, including the liftgate. One door may open when the others won't.
- Push firmly into the door first. That cracks the ice on the rubber seal.
- Then pull the handle gently. Don't yank the handle.
- If the door still won't open, pour lukewarm water on the seal. Hot water can crack cold glass.
- An alcohol-based de-icer spray on the seal works too. And if you use a hair dryer, keep the hair dryer back from the plastic trim.
Now to stop doors freezing, treat the door and liftgate seals with silicone spray or a rubber care product before winter. One RAV4 owner says a yearly silicone spray on the seals stopped their doors freezing.
And with a smart key, the doors still unlock even if the handle is iced over. If the key fob is dead, the hidden key opens the driver door. My key fob battery guide shows how.
Frozen side mirrors
Toyota says a frozen side mirror may not fold. So clear the ice first, and press the rear defroster button to heat the mirrors on RAV4s that have mirror heaters.
Turn the automatic parking brake off on icy nights
So this is the winter step a lot of owners miss. Toyota's winter tips for 2023 to 2026 say "Turn automatic mode of the parking brake off. Otherwise, the parking brake may freeze and not be able to be released automatically." The 2019 to 2022 manuals say it another way: if the parking brake is in automatic mode, release the parking brake after you shift into P.
- On a 2023 to 2026, don't use Brake Hold when you park. Brake Hold is the feature that keeps the brakes on at a stop, and Toyota says Brake Hold can set the parking brake even with automatic mode off.
- In very cold weather, Toyota says to park in P without setting the parking brake, and chock the wheels. Then check the shifter can't leave P.
- Toyota warns that damp brakes left parked in the cold can freeze.
My automatic braking guide shows how to turn the automatic parking brake off.
A frozen power liftgate
So Toyota says "Make sure that there is no ice between the back door and frame that would prevent movement of the back door." And heavy snow on the liftgate is extra weight, which can make the power liftgate stop and beep. Snow on the kick sensor under the bumper can stop the kick sensor working too.
So clear the snow and ice first. If the liftgate is still frozen, open the liftgate by hand, gently. My power liftgate guide covers the stop and beep problem and how to turn the power liftgate off.
Opening a frozen fuel door
2019 to 2025 gas RAV4
So on the gas RAV4, you pull up the fuel door lever by the driver's seat. The lever pulls a cable that releases the fuel door. Toyota doesn't give a frozen fuel door procedure. So if ice holds the fuel door shut, tap around the fuel door or pour warm water around the fuel door. And don't pry at the paint.
RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime and every 2026 RAV4
Now on the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and the 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime, you press the fuel door opener switch. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid work the same way. Basically, the RAV4 lets the pressure out of the fuel tank before the fuel door opens. The fuel door opens within about 10 seconds, and a message shows on the gauge screen.
If the switch can't open the fuel door, Toyota has an emergency release in the cargo area.
- Wrap a flat screwdriver in a rag.
- Use the screwdriver to remove the small cover inside the cargo area.
- Pull the release lever behind the cover. The fuel door opens.
- Turn the fuel cap slowly, because the tank may still be under pressure.
- Fill up slowly.
Toyota says to use this release only in an emergency, and to see a dealer if the fuel door switch fails.
Opening a frozen charge port on a RAV4 Prime or Plug-in Hybrid
So the charge port lid locks and unlocks with the doors. To open the charge port lid, unlock the doors, then press the middle of the lid's back edge.
2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime: the charge port lid won't open
- Open the liftgate.
- Remove the 12-volt battery cover on the side of the cargo area.
- Hook a finger on the emergency release lever and move the lever in the direction Toyota shows. Only move the lever that way, or the lever can break.
- Press the back edge of the charge port lid.
Toyota says this release is for emergency use only, and to see a dealer if the lid keeps sticking. Toyota's Prime manual also has its own section for a charging connector that won't unlock, on page 108 of the 2023 manual.
2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid: the charge port lid won't open
So on the 2026, the release is in a different place. Open the hood and pull the black-handled emergency release cable. And if the charging connector is stuck in the 2026, unlock the doors and press the connector unlock button first. If that fails, use the same hood cable, in an emergency only, then put the cable back.
Charging in snow
- Toyota says check the charge port is free of "dirt, snow and ice" before you plug in.
- Don't plug into an outlet that's sitting in water or snow.
- Don't plug in or unplug with wet hands in rain or snow, and keep the plug and outlet dry.
- 2026 Plug-in Hybrid only. When it's cold and the charging cable is plugged in, the "Warm battery while charging" setting warms the big battery. The battery warming stops after about 3 days plugged in, or when you unplug. In Alaska and Canada, the battery warming keeps going up to 31 days. So during a cold snap, I'd leave a 2026 plugged in.
I cover the two RAV4 Prime cold weather recalls on my RAV4 in snow guide and my plug-in EV range guide. One is about charging below about 41°F, and the other is the 2021 Prime cold weather recall.
Block heaters: which RAV4s can get one
So a block heater is an electric heater in the engine that you plug into a wall outlet. Basically, a block heater warms the engine while the RAV4 is parked.
| RAV4 | Block heater? |
|---|---|
| Any 2019 to 2026 RAV4 in the US | Toyota US doesn't list a block heater for the 2019 to 2026 RAV4. And Toyota's US owner's manuals never mention one. |
| Gas RAV4 in Canada | Toyota Canada dealers sell a cold weather line called Comfort+. Comfort+ has an optional block heater that the dealer installs, plus a cabin warmer, a 12-volt trickle charger and an app to schedule pre-heating. One 2025 RAV4 XLE owner reports paying over CA$600 installed. |
| RAV4 Hybrid | Owners report the RAV4 Hybrid's engine has no hole for a block heater. Toyota hasn't confirmed that. |
| RAV4 Prime | Owners disagree. One says Comfort+ isn't offered on the Prime, and two others report Canadian prices of CA$694.89 and CA$758. So ask a Canadian dealer. |
So in the US, I'd skip the block heater. I'd keep the 12-volt battery healthy and use remote start or pre-heating instead. And in Canada, ask your dealer about the Toyota Comfort+ block heater for your VIN, and get the part number in writing. Taylor Toyota in Regina's Comfort+ page lists no price, so ask your dealer for a quote.
Also, on a RAV4 Prime, Toyota's manual says "Use of a block heater for charging is prohibited." So don't plug the charging cable into a block heater outlet or circuit. My home charging guide covers the right outlet.
My RAV4 winter checklist
- Put in winter washer fluid rated below your coldest night, and never engine antifreeze or soapy water.
- Fit winter wiper blades or new blades. On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the sizes are 26, 16 and 12 inches.
- Get the 12-volt battery tested. Toyota's own winter list says to "Have a service technician inspect the condition of the 12-volt battery." My 12-volt battery guide covers jump-starting and a jump pack.
- Put four winter tires on, all the same size and brand. Toyota says not to go over 75 mph on snow tires. My snow tires guide covers which to buy, and my TPMS reset guide covers the tire pressure light after a cold snap.
- If you use chains, put the chains on the front tires only. Toyota says 30 mph or the chain's limit, whichever is lower, and don't use Lane Tracing Assist with chains.
- Treat the door and liftgate seals with silicone spray or a rubber care product.
- Know where your wiper de-icer and front defroster buttons are. My de-icer guide shows both.
- Know your fuel door's emergency release on a Hybrid, Prime or 2026, and the charge port release on a plug-in.
- Turn the automatic parking brake off for icy nights.
- Make sure remote start or pre-heating works. My key fob remote start guide and Toyota app guide cover both.
- Keep the front radar and windshield camera clear. Ice on the Toyota badge radar shows "Pre-Collision System Unavailable." My PCS unavailable guide explains.
- Canada only: ask about the Comfort+ block heater, and check recall 2021-723 if you have a 2019.
And Toyota's before-you-drive list is a good habit too. Clear snow off the cowl vents, lights, mirrors, windows, roof, and around the tires and brakes. And knock the snow off your shoes before you get in.
What to keep in your RAV4 for winter
So NHTSA's winter kit is a good starting point. NHTSA lists a shovel, a broom, an ice scraper, and sand or kitty litter for grip. Then jumper cables, a flashlight, flares or warning markers, and blankets. And a charged phone and a first aid kit. For longer trips, add food, water and medicine. And Ready.gov adds a phone power bank.
- Snow brush and scraper. The Hopkins SubZero 80037 60 inch Crossover snowbroom has a brush, scraper and squeegee, and reaches a RAV4 roof. $36.99 at Ace Hardware on October 15, 2026.
- Shovel. The Lifeline 4017 Aluminum Sport Utility Shovel comes apart in three pieces and packs into the cargo area. The AAA shop no longer lists the Lifeline shovel, so this link is an Amazon search for the Lifeline 4017 Aluminum Sport Utility Shovel, where prices vary by seller.
- Traction mats. The MAXSA Escaper Buddy traction mats, 20333, pair, $129.99 at Home Depot on October 15, 2026.
- Jump pack. The NOCO Boost Plus GB40, $99.95 at Walmart on October 15, 2026. The GB40 is the same jump pack I pick in my 12-volt battery guide.
And to keep a phone charged from the RAV4, my RAV4 power outlet guide covers each outlet.
If you get stranded
So NHTSA says stay with the RAV4. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow, and only run the engine for short stretches for heat. Put markers on the windows and turn the dome light on.
Now keep in mind, on a RAV4 Hybrid or Prime in READY mode, the gas engine starts and stops on its own for heat. So the carbon monoxide rule still applies, and the tailpipe has to stay clear. My cold weather car camping guide goes deeper on that.
Salt and rust
So Toyota's corrosion warranty covers rust holes in the original body panels for 60 months, any mileage. Rav4Gen5, a Midwest RAV4 owner, thinks extra undercoating isn't worth paying for. That's one owner's opinion, so it's up to you.
Videos worth watching
A Midwest owner of a fifth generation RAV4, the 2019 and newer shape, walks through their winter habits.
- Remote start: They warm the RAV4 up with lock, lock, hold on the key fob, and the climate, seat heat and heated wheel settings carry over. Keep in mind, that needs Connected Services, which my remote start guide explains.
- Washer fluid: They show the washer fluid tank under the hood, which isn't the coolant tank, and use -25°F de-icer fluid.
- One tip to skip: They tap the washer stalk to spray fluid on an iced windshield. Toyota says not to use washer fluid until the glass is warm, so I'd go with Toyota.
- Kit: They carry a small jump pack, plus food, water and blankets.
A Toyota dealer in Raleigh shows the wiper de-icer on a 2020 RAV4 XLE Premium.
- The button: The wiper de-icer button sits next to the heated steering wheel button.
- The heating lines: You can see the thin lines at the bottom of the windshield.
- What the de-icer clears: The melted area follows the heating lines and stops where the wipers park.
- How fast: The de-icer starts working nearly right away, but deep snow takes longer.
A RAV4 Prime owner warms their Prime up from 6°F by idling, with everything on.
- The engine: The gas engine starts right away because it's so cold.
- Settings: They turn on front and rear defrost, max fan and temperature, and the seat and wheel heat.
- Timing: The vent air is a little warm at about 7 minutes, and the cabin is comfortable at about 20 minutes.
- The cost: They lost about 4 to 5 miles of range. So pre-heating while plugged in beats idling.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, on a frosty morning, press the front defroster, pick outside air, and keep the A/C on. And switch your RAV4 out of Eco mode.
Before the first snow, I'd put in winter washer fluid, get the 12-volt battery tested, and turn the automatic parking brake off on icy nights. And never force anything that's frozen. Use warm water instead.
But otherwise, if you're in Canada and want a block heater, ask your dealer for Comfort+, and steer clear of the two recalled part numbers. So hopefully this gets you through winter with a clear windshield and a RAV4 that starts.
