The middle back seat goes in with the seat belt, or with the two inner lower anchors if your car seat's manual allows anchors 17.3 inches apart. And for the front seat in front of a rear-facing car seat, Cars.com's 5'6" passenger was comfortable in its 2021, 2025 and 2026 Limited checks, sometimes after sliding forward about an inch. For taller passengers, the room left depends on which car seat is behind them, and no published test has measured the inches left. So if one parent is very tall, the rear-facing car seat usually goes in the middle or behind the shorter parent.
Quick picks
So if you're standing at the back door of your RAV4 with a new car seat and can't find where it clips in, the anchors are there. They're just tucked away. Below is where the anchors are in your year of RAV4. Then I walk through installing a car seat with the anchors or the seat belt, and checking the install before you drive.
And if you're not sure which RAV4 you have, the 2026 RAV4 is the new generation, sold only as a Hybrid or a Plug-in Hybrid. Every RAV4 from 2019 to 2025 shares the earlier design, including the gas RAV4, the RAV4 Hybrid and the RAV4 Prime (renamed the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2025).
Where the car seat anchors are in a 2019 to 2026 RAV4
So a car seat attaches to a RAV4 in one of two ways, either with the RAV4's seat belt or with LATCH. LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. Basically, LATCH has two parts.
- Lower anchors are two small metal bars for each seat, hidden in the crease where the seat cushion meets the seatback. The car seat clips onto those two bars. Some car seats clip on with straps that end in hooks, called hook connectors. Others push on with stiff metal arms, called rigid connectors.
- A top tether is a strap on the top of a forward-facing car seat. The top tether hooks onto a separate anchor on the back of the RAV4's seatback, so the car seat doesn't pitch forward in a crash.
Now here's where each part sits in each RAV4. Toyota's owner's manuals describe the same layout from 2019 to 2026, including the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid's manual.
| RAV4 years and powertrain | Lower anchors | Top tether anchors |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime | Two outer back seats only. The IIHS measured them 0 to 2 cm deep in the seat crease, taking 8 to 9 pounds of push to attach. Cars.com says they're easy to see. | One behind each of the three back seats, halfway down the back of the seatback. Each has a tether symbol label nearby, but the anchor is buried in the seatback carpet, so you have to dig for it. |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid | Two outer back seats only. Cars.com found them partly hidden and tight against the cushions, so hook connectors take some force. Rigid connectors went on easily. | One behind each of the three back seats, halfway down the back of the seatback, marked with a "TOP TETHER" label. Each anchor sits behind a slit in the seat fabric, so it takes a bit of digging. |
So the easiest way to find a lower anchor is to look for the anchor symbol on the seat. The symbol points down to the metal bar in the crease, and it's the same on both outer seats.
And for the top tether anchor, look on the back of the seatback for the tether symbol. Then dig into the seatback carpet (2019 to 2025) or reach through the slit in the fabric (2026) to find the metal bar. Keep in mind the hook has to grab that metal bar, not the fabric around it.
The IIHS, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, rates how easy car seat anchors are to use. The 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the 2021 to 2024 RAV4 Prime and the 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid all got Good+. Basically, the plus means the middle seat can use the anchors too, by borrowing them. The IIHS hasn't published a rating for the 2026 RAV4. My three car seats in a RAV4 guide has the Cars.com grades for each year.
Something to note is the 2026 RAV4's anchors sit tighter against the cushion than the 2025's. So on a 2026, a car seat with rigid connectors, or a seat belt install, saves you the fight with skinny hooks.
Why the 2026 RAV4 scored worse than the 2025 for car seats
So the 2026 RAV4 scored worse mostly because Toyota moved the lower anchors. On the 2025, Cars.com found the lower anchors exposed and very easy to find and use. On the 2026, the lower anchors are only partly exposed and sit snug against the seat cushions. Cars.com's editors are certified car seat technicians, and they wrote up the 2026 vs 2025 comparison on March 2, 2026.
Basically, Cars.com gives each kind of car seat a letter grade, where A is the best. These are the grades from Cars.com's December 2025 check of a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited, next to the 2025:
| What Cars.com graded | 2025 RAV4 | 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited | Why the 2026 grade changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower anchors (LATCH) | A | B | The anchors sit tight against the cushions, so skinny hook connectors are harder to clip on. |
| Infant seat | A | A | No change. The infant seat base's rigid connectors went on easily. |
| Rear-facing convertible seat | A | B | The convertible seat uses hook connectors, which needed force on the tighter anchors. |
| Forward-facing convertible seat | B | C | The same tight lower anchors, plus top tether anchors that are still buried in the seatback, like the 2025's. |
| Booster seat | C | B | Better on the 2026. Toyota changed the bolsters, the raised edges of the seat cushion, so the booster sits flatter. The buckles still sit on very short stalks. |
Now keep in mind the car seat matters as much as the RAV4. In April 2026, Cars.com checked a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE with newer test seats, and the lower anchors got an A. Those newer car seats' connectors went on easily, even though the anchors still sit close to the cushions. My three car seats guide has every Cars.com grade from 2019 to 2026.
So if you have a 2026 and your car seat clips on with skinny hooks, I'd either push the hooks on firmly or use a seat belt install instead. And if you're shopping for a car seat for a 2026, one with rigid connectors goes on more easily. The IIHS hasn't published a car seat anchor rating for the 2026 RAV4, so Cars.com's checks are the best guide to the 2026.
Which RAV4 back seat to put a car seat in
So here's what Toyota's owner's manuals say about each seat, the same way from 2019 to 2026:
- The two outer back seats are the only seats with their own lower anchors. Either outer seat works with LATCH or the seat belt.
- The middle back seat has no lower anchors of its own. But it can borrow the inner anchor from each outer seat. Those two anchors are 17.3 inches (440 mm) apart. Toyota only allows this if your car seat's manual says that spacing is OK. Otherwise, the middle car seat goes in with the seat belt.
- Car seats with rigid connectors can't go in the middle seat.
- Never put two connectors on one anchor. So if a car seat is already using the outer anchors, the middle car seat goes in with the seat belt.
- For a middle car seat, set both back seatbacks to the same angle. The RAV4's back seat splits 60/40, and each side reclines on its own.
- Never put a rear-facing car seat in the front passenger seat, even when the "AIR BAG OFF" light is on. A forward-facing car seat only goes up front if there's truly no other choice, with the front seat all the way back and upright. The front passenger seat has no top tether anchor.
- If the driver's seat gets in the way of the car seat, Toyota's manual says to use the right-hand back seat, which is the seat behind the front passenger. Then slide the front passenger seat so it doesn't touch the car seat.
Keep in mind that last point is Toyota's own answer to the tall driver problem. I cover front room in more detail further down.
How to install a car seat with the lower anchors (LATCH)
So these steps come from Toyota's owner's manual and work in every RAV4 from 2019 to 2026. Your car seat's own manual comes first, though, since each car seat tightens a little differently.
- Set the back seatback angle. Tilt the RAV4's seatback until the car seat sits flat against it with no gap. For a middle install, set both seatbacks to the same angle.
- For a forward-facing car seat in an outer seat, take the headrest off that seat. Toyota's manual has you do this so the top tether strap can run to its anchor.
- Find the two lower anchors in the crease of the outer seat you're using. Look for the anchor symbol and push the cushion down.
- Attach the car seat. For hook connectors, clip each hook onto a bar. For rigid connectors, push the car seat back until both arms click onto the bars.
- Tighten the car seat the way your car seat's manual says. Before you finish, clear anything from around the anchors, and make sure the RAV4's seat belt isn't trapped behind the car seat.
- For a forward-facing car seat, hook up the top tether using the steps below, then tighten the tether strap.
- Check the install. Hold the car seat where the LATCH strap runs through it and rock it side to side and front to back. The car seat should move less than 1 inch.
- Leave the RAV4's seat alone. Toyota's manual says never to adjust the RAV4's seat after the car seat is in.
And if you took a headrest off in step 2, put the headrest back on as long as it doesn't get in the way of the car seat.
How to hook up the top tether in a RAV4
So the top tether is the part most RAV4 owners struggle with, because the anchors are buried. Here's how it goes for each seat.
Top tether for an outer back seat
- Take the headrest off that seat, if you haven't already.
- Find the tether symbol on the back of the seatback, about halfway down. On a 2026 RAV4, the label reads "TOP TETHER".
- Dig into the seatback carpet (2019 to 2025) or reach through the slit in the fabric (2026) to find the metal bar.
- Run the tether strap over the top of the seatback and clip the hook onto the metal bar. Check that the hook is on the metal, not the carpet or fabric.
- Pull the tether strap tight, then put the headrest back if it fits around the car seat.
Top tether for the middle back seat
- Raise the middle headrest all the way up. You don't take the middle headrest off.
- Run the tether strap under the raised headrest and down to the anchor on the back of the middle seatback.
- Clip the hook onto the metal bar and pull the tether strap tight.
- Don't lower the middle headrest after the tether is hooked.
How to install a car seat with the RAV4's seat belt
So in a RAV4 there are three times you'll want a seat belt install. The first is the middle seat when the outer anchors are taken. The second is once your child is over the LATCH weight limit. And the third is when the anchors fight you, like the tight lower anchors on a 2026.
Basically, the RAV4's back seat belts can lock two ways. Normally a belt only locks in a sudden stop. But if you pull the shoulder belt all the way out and let it feed back even a little, the belt locks in place and won't pull out again. Toyota calls this the automatic locking mode, and it's there to hold a car seat tight. To unlock the belt, let it roll all the way back in, then pull it out again.
Rear-facing car seat (infant seat or convertible seat)
- Set the RAV4's seatback so the car seat sits flat against it.
- Put the car seat in facing the back of the RAV4.
- Run the seat belt through the car seat's belt path, which is the slot marked on the car seat for the belt. Buckle the seat belt with no twists.
- Pull the shoulder belt all the way out, then let it feed back to lock it.
- Push the car seat down into the cushion while the belt feeds back, until there's no slack.
- Tug the belt to check it won't pull out, then rock the car seat to check for less than 1 inch of movement at the belt path.
Forward-facing car seat
The steps are the same as above, with two extras. Take the headrest off if it gets in the way, and hook up the top tether before you do the final check.
Booster seat
Now a booster is the opposite. Don't pull the shoulder belt all the way out for a booster. Toyota's manual warns that the locked belt only tightens, which could hurt your child or make them uncomfortable. The shoulder belt should cross the middle of your child's shoulder, and the lap belt should sit low across the hips.
Taking the car seat out
So to take a belted car seat out, hold the car seat down with one hand and press the buckle release with the other. The cushion can push the car seat up when the buckle lets go. Then let the belt roll back in slowly.
Something to note is The Car Mom, a certified car seat technician, prefers seat belt installs in a tight RAV4 back seat. They say a seat belt install lets you shift the car seat side to side more than LATCH does. My three car seats guide covers how that helps with three across.
When a booster seat kid can't reach the seat belt buckle
So a booster seat uses the RAV4's own seat belt, which means your child has to find and press the buckle themselves. And in a RAV4, the buckle can be hard for a kid to reach. Cars.com found two different buckle problems:
- 2025 RAV4: On the 2025, the raised edge of the seat cushion pushed the booster seat on top of the buckle. And the low buckles were hard for a kid to grab.
- 2026 RAV4: The booster sits flatter, but the buckles sit on very short stalks, flush with the cushion. And the middle seat's buckle is floppy.
These fixes come from Lainie at Safe in the Seat, a certified child passenger safety technician, starting with the free ones:
- Try the booster in a different back seat. Sometimes just moving the booster to the other side fixes the problem, and it costs nothing.
- Check what's next to the booster. With a car seat right beside the booster, there may be no room for a hand. A slimmer car seat next to the booster can free up that room.
- Try a narrower booster, or take the booster's armrests off if the booster's manual allows it. A wide, bulky booster covers the buckle.
- Use a standalone booster instead of an all-in-one car seat in booster mode. Lainie says a booster built only as a booster is often noticeably easier to buckle.
- Try a narrow backless booster if your child still struggles, like the BubbleBum or the Clek Olli. I list their prices in my narrow car seats section.
- Keep your child in a harnessed car seat a little longer if they still fit the harness. Lainie says that can genuinely be the easier path.
And keep in mind, when your child buckles themselves, it's worth a quick look afterward. The lap belt should sit low across the hips, and the shoulder belt should cross the middle of the shoulder, with no twists.
When to stop using the lower anchors (the LATCH weight limit)
So Toyota's RAV4 owner's manuals don't give a LATCH weight limit. The general rule is to stop using the lower anchors once your child and the car seat weigh 65 pounds together. That's per Vanderbilt's injury prevention program.
And car seats made after February 2014 print their own lower anchor limit on a label on the car seat. So follow the label on your car seat. Once your child is over that limit, switch to a seat belt install, and keep using the top tether for a forward-facing car seat.
How to check a car seat install, and where to get a free check
So the quick check is the same for LATCH and seat belt installs. Hold the car seat at the belt path and rock it side to side and front to back. The car seat should move less than 1 inch. Car seat makers and certified technicians use this same 1 inch check.
Now if you use a seat cover or a dog hammock on the back seat, keep it away from the anchors. Toyota's manual says to make sure nothing is around the LATCH anchors, and that the seat belt isn't caught behind the car seat.
And for peace of mind, it's worth a free check from a certified technician. A Child Passenger Safety Technician is someone trained and certified to install and check car seats. You can find one near you through Safe Kids' "Get your car seat checked" page, which is free.
How much front seat room is left with a rear-facing car seat behind it
So a rear-facing car seat sticks out toward the front of the car. That means whoever sits in front of it has to slide their seat forward. Toyota lists 41.0 inches of front legroom and 37.8 inches of back seat legroom in every RAV4 from 2019 to 2026. But Toyota doesn't say how far the front seats slide.
Something to note is no published test has measured how many inches of knee room are left in front of a rear-facing car seat in any RAV4. What's out there are heights and whether the person fit. So here's every report, with who sat in front and which car seat was behind them.
| RAV4 | Person in front | Rear-facing car seat behind them | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 RAV4 Hybrid Limited | Cars.com's 5'6" passenger | Chicco KeyFit 30 infant seat | Comfortable legroom. |
| 2021 RAV4 Hybrid, 2022 and 2023 RAV4 Prime | Cars.com's shorter passenger | Graco Contender 65 convertible | The passenger seat had to move forward a bit. Cars.com says taller passengers will need more legroom. |
| 2021 RAV4 Prime | J.Mak, a 5'11" car seat technician | Clek Liing infant seat | They hardly moved their seat forward, if at all, and were comfortable. |
| 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid | The Car Mom, about 6 feet, in their driving position | Clek Foonf | They said they didn't have a ton of clearance. |
| 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | Cars.com's 5'6" passenger | Chicco KeyFit 30 infant seat, and Graco Contender 65 convertible | Comfortable after moving the front seat up about an inch for the KeyFit 30, and a little for the Contender 65. |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited | Cars.com's 5'6" passenger | Chicco KeyFit 30, and Graco Contender 65 | Good legroom with both. |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE | Cars.com's 5'8" passenger | Chicco KeyFit 30, and Graco Extend2Fit convertible | Needed a bit more legroom to be comfortable with both. |
| 2026 RAV4 | J.Mak, a 5'11" driver | Clek Liing at its most reclined, and Clek Foonf | J.Mak moved forward a little for the Liing, then was fine. The Foonf left them lots of knee room. |
| 2026 RAV4 Limited | Micah Muzio's wife, 5'2" | Not named | Micah's wife said there's room for a rear-facing car seat. |
| 2019 RAV4 Hybrid, Australia | BabyDrive's reviewer, 5'11" (180 cm) | Not named, an Australian car seat | Fine in front of a rear-facing car seat. |
| 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, Australia | BabyDrive's driver, 6'1" (186 cm) | Not named, an Australian car seat | Fit in front of every setup, per the video's description. |
And there are a few owner reports worth knowing about, though each is just one family. One owner wrote on BabyDrive that their 6'4" partner can't fit in their RAV4 with a rear-facing car seat, without saying the RAV4's year. Edmunds says the front passenger in a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 may need to scoot up to an uncomfortable spot for a rear-facing infant seat. And the viral TikTok of a dad riding with their knees on the dash is covered in my RAV4 family size guide.
So putting those together, here's what the reports show:
- Up to about 5'6" in front: Fine in every Cars.com check, sometimes after sliding the front seat forward about an inch.
- About 5'8" to 6 feet in front: It depends on the car seat. Cars.com's 5'8" passenger was short on room with a Chicco KeyFit 30 and a Graco Extend2Fit in a 2026 LE. But J.Mak, at 5'11", was fine with Clek seats in a 2021 Prime and a 2026. And The Car Mom, at about 6 feet, was tight with a Clek Foonf in a 2023.
- 6'4" and up in front: J.Mak says at 6'4" to 6'6" you're not going to be comfortable, and one owner's 6'4" partner couldn't fit. So plan on the middle seat.
Now here's what helps, starting with the one that makes the biggest difference:
- Put the rear-facing car seat in the middle. Use the seat belt, or the borrowed inner anchors if your car seat's manual allows 17.3 inch spacing. Then neither front seat has a car seat right behind it.
- Put the rear-facing car seat behind the shorter parent. Toyota's manual says to use the seat behind the front passenger if the driver's seat gets in the way.
- Use the most upright recline your car seat allows for your child's age. Check the angle indicator on the side of the car seat. A more upright car seat takes less room front to back.
- Try your car seat with the tall parent sitting in front. The same rear-facing Clek Foonf left a 5'11" driver lots of knee room in a 2026, but felt tight to a 6-foot driver in a 2023. So the car seat and the person both matter.
So ultimately, if the person in front is about 5'6" or shorter, a rear-facing car seat behind them worked in every Cars.com check that used a 5'6" passenger. From about 5'8" to 6 feet, the room comes down to the car seat. And if one of you is well over 6 feet, the middle seat solves the problem for one car seat. For two or three car seats with a very tall parent, my three car seats guide walks through the options.
Car seats that install well in a RAV4
So these are the car seats with the best evidence of fitting a RAV4. My three car seats guide covers narrow car seats and three across in more detail.
| Car seat | What it showed in a RAV4 | Price (checked Oct 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Clek Foonf convertible | Rear-facing, it left a 5'11" driver lots of knee room in a 2026. A 6-foot driver was tight in a 2023. In a 2023, it fit behind the passenger with a Clek Fllo in the middle. | From $649.99 at Clek, $699.99 in Clek's Mammoth fabric |
| Clek Liing infant seat | A 5'11" adult was comfortable in front of the Liing in a 2021 Prime, and after a small move in a 2026. | From $599.99 at Clek, $649.99 in Mammoth |
| Clek Fllo convertible | Fit in the middle of a 2023 RAV4. Clek says the Fllo suits seat belt installs, which the middle seat usually needs. | From $499.99 at Clek, $549.99 in Mammoth |
| Graco SlimFit3 LX all-in-one | The narrowest car seat with RAV4 evidence, about 16.7 inches wide. Graco confirmed three fit across a 2019 to 2021 RAV4. | $299.99 at Graco, out of stock in the Kunningham color. Walmart has it for $299.99, other colors from $229.99. |
| Diono Radian 3R all-in-one | About 17 inches wide. One owner fit two plus a Chicco car seat in a 2022 RAV4 XLE Hybrid. | $184.74 on Amazon |
| Chicco KeyFit 30 infant seat | Cars.com's test infant seat in every RAV4 check. Comfortable for a 5'6" passenger, short on room for a 5'8" passenger in a 2026 LE. | $229.99 at Chicco |
| Graco Extend2Fit convertible | Cars.com's rear-facing test seat in the 2026 LE. A 5'8" passenger could have used more space. | $239.99 at Graco |
| Graco Contender 65 convertible, now replaced by the Graco Contender Slim | Cars.com's rear-facing test seat through the 2026 Limited. Graco no longer lists the Contender 65, so the link goes to the closest Graco seat. | $189.99 at Graco for the Contender Slim |
| Graco TurboBooster 2.0 Highback booster | The current version of Cars.com's test booster. | $69.99 at Graco |
Keep in mind Clek's Mammoth fabric costs $50 more on each of those Clek seats, so the Clek prices above are "from" prices.
Videos about installing a car seat in a RAV4 worth watching
A certified car seat technician installs a Clek Liing infant seat and a Clek Foonf in a 2026 RAV4.
- Where the anchors are: They show two sets of lower anchors tucked into the seat crease and three top tether anchors behind the back seats.
- Top tether tip: For a forward-facing car seat, they take the headrest off and run the tether strap through the slit. Then they make sure the hook grabs the metal anchor, not the fabric.
- Seat belt install: They install the rear-facing Foonf with the seat belt, because the 2026's lower anchors are tucked in tight.
- Front room: At 5'11", they moved forward a little for the Liing and had lots of knee room with the Foonf. They suggest the middle seat for parents 6'4" to 6'6".
A short walk around a 2021 RAV4's back seat that shows exactly where each anchor is.
- The name: They call the lower anchors ISOFIX, which is the European name for the same metal bars as LATCH lower anchors.
- Lower anchors: Open the back door wide and look for the anchor symbol on the seat. The symbol points down to the bar, and it's the same on both outer seats.
- Middle seat: They use the seat belt for the middle seat.
- Top tethers: There are three. Each is well hidden, but has the tether logo and a small slit in the fabric for the bar. Raise the headrest when a car seat is in.
A certified car seat technician installs a Clek Liing infant seat in a 2021 RAV4 Prime.
- Anchors: They show lower anchors in the two outer seats and top tether anchors behind all three back seats. For the middle seat, go by Toyota's manual, which allows borrowed anchors only if your car seat's maker allows 17.3 inch spacing.
- Front room: With the Liing behind them, they hardly had to move their seat forward, and were comfortable at 5'11".
- Doors: They point out the back doors don't open close to 90 degrees, unlike their Honda CR-V's.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, every RAV4 from 2019 to 2026 has the same car seat anchor layout, and the anchors are just tucked away. Look for the anchor symbol in the seat crease, and dig for the top tether anchor halfway down the back of the seatback.
If you have a 2026 and your car seat has skinny hook connectors, I'd go with a seat belt install. And if one parent is well over 6 feet, I'd put the rear-facing car seat in the middle with the seat belt. But otherwise, LATCH in either outer seat is the easy way in.
Then I'd book a free check with a certified technician before your first long drive. So hopefully this helps you get your car seat in right on the first try.
