What Toyota's rust warranty covers
So I put the warranty headline in my winter prep guide, and here's the detail. Toyota's US warranty guides for every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 call it the Corrosion Perforation Warranty. Basically, perforation means rust that eats all the way through. Toyota covers repair or replacement of any original body panel that rusts through, for 60 months, regardless of mileage.
Now keep in mind, the warranty is only for rust-through. Surface rust isn't listed as covered. And the same US guide lists damage from salt, stone chips and "other environmental conditions" as not covered. Toyota's guide doesn't explain how the salt line fits with a rust warranty. So if you ever have a rust claim, get the dealer's answer in writing.
And Toyota's US warranty guide and owner's manuals say nothing about aftermarket undercoating, good or bad. Toyota US hasn't put out a statement either way.
What Toyota Canada says
So Toyota Canada's 2026 warranty booklet is clearer. Toyota Canada gives the same 60 months with unlimited kilometers, plus a paint defect warranty of 36 months or 60,000 km. And Toyota Canada says extra rust products are "not required" to keep the rust warranty.
But Toyota Canada's booklet lists a few things it won't cover.
- Rust from a non-Toyota product that traps moisture or dirt between the product and the body metal.
- Any rust that isn't a hole. Toyota Canada says "Corrosion other than perforation is not warranted."
- Surface rust left unrepaired that turns into a hole "due to neglect of vehicle care."
So basically, in Canada, a paint chip you ignore that rusts through isn't covered. And a hard coating that traps salt against the metal can cost you the rust claim. Those two exceptions are a good reason to touch up chips, and to pick a thin spray over a thick coating.
My Toyota warranty guide has the rust-through line next to the rest of Toyota's free coverage.
How to wash the salt off your RAV4's underside
So this is the part that matters most, on every year and powertrain. Toyota's manual for every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 says to wash "immediately" after driving on salted roads or near the sea coast. And Toyota says to "liberally apply water to the vehicle body, wheel wells and underside of the vehicle."
And AAA agrees. AAA's 2017 fact sheet says 15 percent of drivers in winter areas needed at least one rust repair from road de-icers in five years. The average repair was $490. AAA says to wash the whole car often, including the underside, with car wash soap, not dish soap. And give the underside "one last cleaning in the spring," because leftover salt keeps working all year.
Where to aim the pressure wand under a RAV4
So at a self-serve wash bay, Toyota's manual gives the rules for the pressure wand.
- Keep the nozzle at least 11.9 inches (30 cm) from the RAV4's body.
- Keep the nozzle tip back from the rubber boots and the wiring connectors. Basically, boots are the rubber or plastic covers Toyota puts over some of the parts underneath. Toyota also says to keep the tip off the steering, suspension, brake and drive parts.
- On a RAV4 Hybrid, Prime or Plug-in Hybrid, keep the tip off the orange high-voltage cables and the rear motor connector. Toyota's list says connectors and "traction related parts," and on a hybrid RAV4 that takes in the orange cables and the rear motor.
- Rinse the wheel wells well. Motormouth, a Canadian car show, says to power wash the salt off the inside of the wheel wells and skip the brush wash.
- Don't spray inside the engine bay. Toyota says that can cause a fire. And don't spray the front radar, or point the wand straight at the camera.
Now how thorough should you be? One RAV4 Prime owner says the undercarriage spray at an automatic car wash "isn't sufficient." They rinse by hand "until the water runs clear." My car wash checklist covers what to switch off before an automatic wash, so I won't repeat it here.
Dry the brakes before you park
So Toyota says brakes left wet can rust and stick. Before you park after a wash, drive slowly and press the brakes a few times to dry them. Drying the brakes matters even more on a RAV4 Hybrid, Prime or Plug-in Hybrid. Basically, the electric motor does most of the slowing down, which Toyota calls regenerative braking. So the rotors barely get used. My 200,000-mile guide explains rusty hybrid rotors.
Don't leave the carpet wet
Toyota also says not to wash the floor with water, because "Water may also cause the body to rust." So in winter, lift the floor mats now and then. If the carpet under the mats is soaked from slush, dry it out.
And after a trail, wash the mud off the brakes and underside too. My RAV4 off-road guide covers that.
Which parts rust on a 2019 to 2026 RAV4
So the good news first. Owners describe the 2019 and newer RAV4's underside as mostly plastic panels. The RAV4 Hybrid has even more panels because of the high-voltage wiring. The steel you can see is the subframes, control arms, sway bars, shocks and springs, tie rods, brake parts, exhaust and the pinch welds under the doors.
And Toyota Canada described the factory protection in a 2024 letter to a RAV4 Prime owner. The body gets dipped in a phosphate bath. A wax sealer goes in the corners of the hood and doors. And anti-chip paint goes on the front edge of the hood, the lower doors and the rocker panels.
What owners report to NHTSA
So NHTSA is the US government safety agency, and owners file complaints with NHTSA. Here's how many NHTSA complaints mention rust or corrosion for each RAV4, as of October 15, 2026.
| RAV4 | All complaints | Mention rust | What the rust complaints are about |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 RAV4 | 879 | 32 | 7 are the hybrid cable and 1 is brakes. About 15 are water leaking in at the roof rails, doors or windows, mostly worry about wet wiring. 2 are roof rust spots, 3 are the coolant valve, and 4 are other one-off problems. |
| 2020 RAV4 | 635 | 7 | 2 are hybrid wiring, 1 is a coolant valve plug, 1 is peeling hood paint, and 1 is water by the windshield pillar. The other 2, a water pump and the power liftgate, only mention corrosion in passing. |
| 2021 RAV4 | 387 | 11 | 9 are the hybrid cable, and 2 are door water and rust by a front suspension mount. |
| 2022 RAV4 | 149 | 3 | 1 hybrid cable, 2 water in doors. |
| 2023 RAV4 | 158 | 4 | 1 hybrid cable, and paint chips to bare metal, bubbling paint and mold. |
| 2024 RAV4 | 176 | 0 | None. |
| 2025 RAV4 | 89 | 3 | Water in doors, early rust after purchase, and a sunroof leak. |
| 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime | 215 | 2 | Both are the hybrid cable. |
| 2025 and 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid | 23 | 0 | None. |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid | 24 | 0 | None. |
NHTSA files most 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid complaints together under "RAV4," and the Prime, the Plug-in Hybrid and the 2026 models separately. The few 2019 to 2025 complaints filed under "RAV4 Hybrid" add just 1 more rust complaint, a corroded hybrid cable on a 2019. So basically, outside the hybrid cable, owners file very few rust complaints, and almost none about rust holes underneath.
The hybrid rear motor cable
So the one rust problem Toyota has confirmed is the rear motor cable connector on the RAV4 Hybrid and Prime. Road salt and water get into the connector and corrode it. The cable problem affects the 2019 to 2024 RAV4 Hybrid built through mid-February 2024 and the 2021 to 2024 RAV4 Prime built through early March 2024. Toyota's free seal job is called 25TD01, and it needs to be done by September 30, 2028 to keep Toyota's 10-year cable coverage. My hybrid cable corrosion guide has the whole story and how to check your VIN.
Water trapped in the doors
Now this one is worth a look every spring. Owners filed about 28 NHTSA complaints about RAV4 doors holding water: 7 for 2019, 7 for 2020, 2 for 2021, 8 for 2022, 3 for 2023 and 1 for 2025. Some of those mix in other door problems. One 2019 owner says the drain holes "are easily blocked by dirt debris." And a dealer tech told a 2022 RAV4 LE owner that water in the doors is "a known issue with RAV4 models and may be caused by clogged drain" holes.
So the check is simple. Open each door and make sure the drain slots along the bottom edge are clear. And if a door sloshes when you close it, the drain is blocked.
Body rust and paint
- 2019 RAV4 roof. Two owners report rust spots on the roof, one next to the roof rail. That fits with the roof rail leak on 2019 to 2021 RAV4s, which my years to avoid guide covers.
- Paint chips. One 2023 owner had chips to bare metal on the front under 8,000 miles. Another 2023 owner had bubbling paint, and a 2020 owner had peeling hood paint.
- Single reports. One 2021 owner found rust under the hood where the front suspension mounts. And one 2025 owner saw early rust soon after buying, and the dealer offered to paint over it.
What owners see underneath
- A 2022 RAV4 Hybrid SE owner in southern Ontario, with no rustproofing, found "two spots on control arms" after one winter and "none on body or doors."
- An eastern Canada owner with no undercoating checks every fall and spring. After 3 winters they see "no sign of the usual rust."
- A 2019 RAV4 Hybrid XLE daily driver in the Advancing DIY video already had surface rust on some bushing housings and bare steel.
And older RAV4s show where rust ends up long term. One 2006 RAV4 that spent 15 years in Connecticut had its rear subframe crumble by hand. That's not a 2019 or newer RAV4. But it shows why the rear subframe and control arms are the parts to watch as your RAV4 ages.
Is undercoating worth it on a RAV4?
So two very different things get called undercoating, and the difference matters.
- Thin oil sprays. Krown, Fluid Film, Corrosion Free and Rust Check stay wet and creep into seams. You redo them every year or so.
- Thick rubber or tar undercoating. Thick undercoating is often what a dealer sells. One 2023 RAV4 Prime XSE owner says that once a thick undercoating ages and cracks, salt gets trapped under it. And "you CANNOT see the rust happening."
Who should get a yearly spray
- If you'll keep your RAV4 10 years or more in a heavy-salt state or province, a yearly thin spray makes sense. Have the underbody panels removed, and keep the spray off the orange cables, the rear motor, the exhaust and the brakes.
- If you lease, or trade in within about 5 to 6 years, just wash the salt off and fix the chips. Toyota's 5-year rust warranty runs about as long as you'll own the RAV4.
- On any RAV4, skip the dealer's thick undercoating. I explain why just below.
One Michigan owner of a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid XSE drove to Krown with 9 miles on the RAV4 and goes every year. They paid about $130 a year in 2023. After 3 winters and about 83,000 to 90,000 miles, they report "no issues" and no rust at the hybrid cable connector.
Why I'd skip the dealer's undercoating
So Consumer Reports told a reader in 2018 they were right to skip an $800 dealer undercoating. Consumer Reports says "Cars today are manufactured with corrosion protection," and the add-on is "profitable for car dealerships."
And dealer jobs can miss spots. In the Guns N' Rides video below, the dealer's rustproofing on a 2022 RAV4 stopped short, leaving bare metal behind the plastic panels. The dealer redid the job. So if you do buy rustproofing, put the RAV4 on a lift and check the work.
Now on a RAV4 Hybrid, Prime or Plug-in Hybrid, there's one more reason. Toyota Canada's 2024 letter says undercoating "could camouflage the orange high voltage leads." Basically, a mechanic or first responder might not see the high-voltage cable and could get shocked. Toyota Canada says it "does not endorse the use" of aftermarket rustproofing. Toyota Canada says rustproofing is "entirely at your discretion." But Toyota Canada won't take responsibility if a product damages a factory part.
Where to keep the spray off your RAV4
- Hybrid, Prime and Plug-in Hybrid: keep spray off the orange high-voltage cables. Toyota Canada's worry is that a coating hides the orange color.
- Hybrid, Prime and Plug-in Hybrid: keep spray off the rear motor's cooling fins. That's owner advice, not a Toyota rule. One Prime owner says the manual warns about the fins, but Toyota's Hybrid, Prime and Plug-in Hybrid manuals don't mention them.
- Keep spray off the lower middle of the rear bumper if your RAV4 has the hands-free kick sensor. Toyota's manual says not to apply coatings there.
- Keep spray off the brake rotors and pads, and the exhaust. Spray on the exhaust burns off and smells.
- No spray or wax on the 2026 RAV4's matte painted wheels. Toyota says to clean matte wheels with water and diluted neutral soap only.
Now something to note is that Toyota dealers disagree about hybrids. One Ontario dealer won't rustproof hybrids "because of all the electrics." And a Nova Scotia service manager said an oil spray wouldn't hurt the hybrid. One Canadian poster says Toyota voids the hybrid warranty if any undercoating is present. But the poster cited no Toyota document, and others in the same thread disagreed. And Toyota Canada's warranty booklet only excludes rust that a product causes. So if you're worried, ask Toyota's head office in writing.
What to ask a rustproofing shop
So most of the steel on a 2019 or newer RAV4 hides behind the plastic underbody panels. And shops differ on whether they take the panels off. Krown and Corrosion Free both told one Quebec owner they don't remove the panels. Krown drills small holes and plugs them, and Corrosion Free doesn't drill. But another owner's Corrosion Free shop took every underbody panel and wheel well liner off a 2021 Prime, and didn't spray the motors. Some shops charge extra to take the panels off and put them back.
So I'd ask the shop three things. Do you remove the underbody panels? Do you drill holes? And will you keep the spray off the orange cables and the rear motor?
Krown says its spray is clear, so it won't hide the orange markings. Krown also says its spray doesn't conduct electricity, with a dielectric strength of 40,000 volts. Those are Krown's own claims. And Krown says its product shouldn't void a warranty unless the automaker's warranty says so, and suggests asking the automaker in writing.
Rust sprays and shops
- Krown annual rust control, shop service. Krown's pricing page listed $169.95 for a small, medium or large SUV on October 15, 2026. Krown's page doesn't say if that's Canadian or US dollars.
- Krown Rust Protection & Lubricant, 14 oz spray can. Krown Rust Protection & Lubricant at U.S. Cargo Control, $17.99 and in stock on October 15, 2026. The spray can isn't confirmed to be the same formula Krown shops spray.
- Fluid Film spray can, 11.75 oz. Fluid Film Aerosol 11.75 oz, AS11, at Russo Power, $11.99 and in stock on October 15, 2026. Here's the Fluid Film maker page too.
- Corrosion Free, shop service in Canada. Corrosion Free lists no price online. One owner goes every 18 months.
- Rust Check, shop service and spray cans in Canada. Rust Check is a Canadian shop service that also sells spray cans.
Now keep in mind, washing can strip an oil spray. One owner says Fluid Film washes off the front edge of the RAV4's front lower control arms. So if you spray, touch up the wheel wells and front control arms each fall. But keep washing anyway, because the salt does more harm than a worn spray.
And one more thing to avoid is the electronic rust module, a box that claims to stop rust electrically. Motormouth calls it "snake oil," so I'd skip it.
My RAV4 spring rust check
- Wash the underside and wheel wells once the salt season is over. Keep the wand off the boots, connectors and orange cables. Then drive slowly and brake a few times before you park.
- Look at the bare steel underneath. Check the front and rear subframes and the front edge of the front lower control arms. Then check the rear suspension arms and alignment adjusters, the sway bars, the tie rod ends and the pinch welds under the doors. Light orange surface rust on bare steel is normal. Flaking, holes or swelling metal isn't.
- Check the brakes. Listen for grinding on the first few stops, and feel for a pulsing pedal.
- On a 2019 to 2024 RAV4 Hybrid or 2021 to 2024 Prime, check the cable fix. Make sure the free 25TD01 cable seal is done, and if it isn't, get it done before September 30, 2028. Never clean or touch the orange connector yourself.
- Check the door drains. Open each door, make sure the slots on the bottom edge are clear, and listen for sloshing.
- Lift the floor mats. If the carpet is wet, dry it. On a 2019 to 2021 RAV4 or a 2021 Prime with a damp headliner or pillar by the windshield, check the roof rail leak coverage in my years to avoid guide.
- Touch up paint chips on the front edge of the hood, the lower doors and the rear bumper, anywhere the chip goes down to metal. Your paint code is on the sticker in the driver's door jamb. Look up the Toyota touch-up pen for your color at Toyota's parts site.
- If you oil spray, plan to touch up the wheel wells and front control arms in the fall.
And for the rest of winter prep, my winter checklist has it. If you're buying a used RAV4 from salt country, my used RAV4 buying guide covers what to look for.
Videos worth watching
The video starts at the Fluid Film part, on a friend's daily driver 2019 RAV4 Hybrid XLE.
- What they found: Surface rust on some bushing housings and bare steel already.
- The panels: They take off the under tray, held by 5 bolts and clips, and some clips may break. They say the hybrid has more plastic underneath because of the hybrid wiring.
- Where they spray: The pinch seams, the frame, the bumper, the sway bars, the shocks and the tie rod nuts.
- Where they don't: The exhaust, because the spray burns off and smells.
A 2022 RAV4 owner puts their RAV4 on a lift during an oil change and looks at the dealer's rustproofing.
- What they found: The dealer's product stopped short, and bare metal behind the plastic panels was left untouched.
- What happened next: The dealer agreed to redo the job.
- Their verdict: The dealer's protection package wasn't worth the money.
- Heads up: The Guns N' Rides video wanders off topic in places.
A Canadian car show answers a viewer's question about rustproofing a hybrid. The video starts at the rust part, which runs about 3 minutes.
- Electronic rust modules: They call them "snake oil."
- Hybrid warranty: Don't rely on what a dealer says. Get it in writing from head office.
- Where rust starts: Door bottoms, wheel wells and the trunk lid.
- How long you keep the car: For 4 to 5 years, just wash it and spray a little yourself. If you'll keep it for good, get a yearly spray.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the things that protect a 2019 to 2026 RAV4 most cost nothing. Rinse the salt off the underside and wheel wells all winter and once more in spring. Then dry the brakes, touch up chips and check the door drains.
If you'll keep your RAV4 10 years or more in salt country, a yearly thin spray like Krown or Fluid Film is worth it. Just keep the spray off the orange cables on a Hybrid, Prime or Plug-in Hybrid. And on any RAV4, I'd skip the dealer's thick undercoating.
So hopefully this helps your RAV4 stay solid underneath for as long as you keep it.
