Quick picks
How loud the RAV4 is on the highway, by year and trim
So the best numbers come from Car and Driver, because Car and Driver measures every car the same way, with a sound meter in the cabin at a steady 70 mph. Car and Driver writes its readings as dBA, which is a kind of decibel reading.
And something to note is that every outlet uses its own road, speed and meter. So a number from one outlet only compares fairly with other numbers from that same outlet.
| RAV4 Car and Driver tested | At 70 mph | At full throttle | Car and Driver's test published |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited AWD, on factory Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 tires | About 68 dBA | 73 dBA | June 2019 |
| 2023 RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition, on factory Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail all-terrain tires | 68 dBA | Not published | February 2023 |
| 2026 RAV4 Limited AWD (Hybrid), on 20-inch factory tires | 69 dBA | 75 dBA | October 2025 |
| 2026 RAV4 Woodland Plug-in Hybrid, on factory all-terrain tires, with crossbars | 69 dBA | 73 dBA | July 2026 |
So the RAV4 sits in the middle of the pack at 70 mph. In Car and Driver's October 2025 comparison test with that same 2026 RAV4 Limited, the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring measured 68 dBA and the 2025 Subaru Forester Touring Hybrid measured 69 dBA.
Now Edmunds measures at 70 mph too. The 2026 RAV4 that Edmunds is driving for a year measured 66.7 decibels, against 64 for the Honda CR-V and the Hyundai Tucson. The Edmunds editor said there was "more road and wind noise than I anticipated." But the editor also said the gap isn't a reason to pick a CR-V or Tucson over the RAV4.
And Car Confections, a YouTube channel that meters every car it reviews, measures at 55 mph instead. So Car Confections' numbers are lower because 55 mph is slower, and they only compare with each other. The table below shows Car Confections' RAV4 readings from its home state of Kentucky.
| RAV4 Car Confections tested | At 55 mph | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 RAV4 Woodland Plug-in Hybrid | 52.5 dB | Quietest RAV4 on the list |
| 2026 RAV4 XLE Premium (Hybrid) | 55.0 dB | No note |
| 2024 RAV4 Prime | 55.3 dB | Had crossbars on |
| 2024 RAV4 Adventure (gas) | 56.1 dB | No note |
| 2024 RAV4 Hybrid XSE | 56.4 dB | Had crossbars on |
| 2025 RAV4 Limited | 60.6 dB | Loudest RAV4 on the list. The list doesn't say whether the 2025 Limited was gas or Hybrid. |
Also in Kentucky, Car Confections measured a 2026 Hyundai Tucson Limited at 55.2 dB and a 2026 Honda CR-V Sport Touring at 55.6 dB. A 2026 Nissan Rogue Platinum measured 52.8 dB. Car Confections also measured four 2026 RAV4s on Toyota's press drive in Arizona, at 57.8 to 59.5 dB. But those were different roads, so the Arizona numbers don't compare with the Kentucky ones.
So ultimately, the RAV4 is a little louder than the quietest rivals, but not by much.
Where the gas RAV4 and the RAV4 Hybrid sound different
So at a steady 70 mph, the gas RAV4 and the RAV4 Hybrid are about the same. Car and Driver said so in its 2019 RAV4 Hybrid test. The big difference is when you floor it.
Basically, the 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 is the loud one under hard acceleration. In Car and Driver's 2024 test of eight compact SUVs, the gas 2024 RAV4 TRD Off-Road hit 78 decibels at full throttle, tied for loudest of the eight. In Car and Driver's separate tests, the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited hit 73 at full throttle, and the 2026 RAV4 Limited hit 75. I compare the two powertrains in more depth in my RAV4 Hybrid vs gas guide.
Is the 2026 RAV4 quieter than the 2019 to 2025 RAV4?
So the 2026 RAV4 is a little quieter at most. Toyota did put real work into noise for 2026, and Toyota's press release lists these changes:
- A new shape for the door seal at the front pillar, and new side mirrors, to cut wind noise coming into the cabin.
- A sound-damping glue added to the front and rear footwells, under the floor and in the rear wheel wells.
- Stiffer mounting points for the suspension and a new suspension bushing, meant to cut vibration and noise.
- No gas-only RAV4 for 2026, so the loud 2.5-liter gas engine under hard acceleration is gone from the lineup.
But on a meter at 70 mph, Car and Driver's 2026 RAV4 Limited measured 69 dBA, and its 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited measured about 68. So on the highway, the 2026 lands in the same place as the 2019 to 2025 RAV4. I cover everything else that changed in my 2026 vs 2025 RAV4 guide.
And something worth knowing is that from 2021 to 2025, only the RAV4 Prime SE and XSE came with acoustic front side windows, which is glass made to cut noise. No gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid trim got acoustic glass. Toyota's US press release for the 2026 doesn't mention acoustic side glass, so acoustic glass on a US 2026 RAV4 isn't confirmed.
Is a CR-V or a Forester quieter than a RAV4?
So a CR-V is a little quieter, but not by much. Car and Driver measured the 2026 CR-V Hybrid Sport Touring at 68 dBA and the 2026 RAV4 Limited at 69 dBA at 70 mph. And Edmunds measured its 2026 RAV4 about 2.7 decibels louder than a CR-V. Among CR-V trims, only the Sport Touring has acoustic front door glass. I go through the rest in my RAV4 Hybrid vs CR-V Hybrid guide.
And the 2025 Subaru Forester Touring Hybrid measured the same 69 dBA as the 2026 RAV4 Limited in Car and Driver's comparison test. I compare those two in my RAV4 vs Forester guide.
Where the noise comes from: the factory tires
So the factory tires are the biggest part of the road noise on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. Tire Rack, a big online tire store, runs a survey where owners rate their tires, and noise is scored out of 10. Common factory tires on 2019 to 2025 RAV4s include the Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus and the Dunlop Grandtrek PT20, and both score near the bottom. The Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 has the lowest noise score in the whole survey. But the factory tire brand changes from one RAV4 to the next, so check the side of your tires, where the brand, model and size are printed.
| Tire | Noise score (out of 10) | Owner miles behind the score |
|---|---|---|
| Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 | 9.1 | 24 million |
| Continental CrossContact LX25 | 8.9 | 22 million |
| Yokohama Geolandar CV G058 | 8.7 | 2.8 million |
| Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra | 8.3 | 5 million |
| Continental CrossContact RX | 8.2 | 660,000 |
| Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus, factory version (a common 2019 to 2025 RAV4 factory tire) | 6.7 | 6.7 million |
| Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 (the factory tire on Car and Driver's 2019 RAV4 Hybrid Limited) | 5.2 | 1.6 million |
And if you'd rather replace the factory tires with the same model, Discount Tire lists the Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus at $147 to $396 per tire. The Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 is $217 to $265 per tire. Both prices cover all sizes, checked October 15, 2026.
And my wheels and tires page lists the factory tire size for each 2019 to 2025 trim, gas, Hybrid and Prime.
And a few other things change how loud the tires are:
- The road surface. Rough pavement and chip seal, the pebbly surface on a lot of back roads, are louder than smooth asphalt. That's why a steady roar that comes and goes with the road is normal tire noise.
- Worn or cupped tires. Basically, cupping is when the tread wears into uneven dips, usually from bad alignment or skipped rotations. One 2022 RAV4 owner had loud tire noise and cupping on the inside edge of the right rear tire at 18,357 miles. The alignment check showed the right rear wheel tilted in more than Toyota's spec, and the dealer said that tilt can't be adjusted, so the problem was still there at 30,345 miles.
- All-terrain tires. Car and Driver didn't measure any extra noise from the all-terrain tires on its 2023 RAV4 Hybrid Woodland or its 2026 Woodland Plug-in Hybrid. But reviewers and owners do complain about Woodland tire noise, so the result may depend on the road and how worn the tires are. My all-terrain tire guide has the owner noise scores.
Where the noise comes from: crossbars, door seals and the glass roof
Roof crossbars
So crossbars are a common cause of a whistle at highway speed. Car Confections says installed crossbars are one of the things that raise its sound readings the most. But Car and Driver's 2026 Woodland Plug-in Hybrid had crossbars and measured the same as the 2026 Limited. So how much crossbars add probably depends on the bars and the wind.
And something to note is that Toyota warned in a 2013 bulletin for the 2014 4Runner that crossbars installed backwards make wind noise at highway speeds. So it's worth checking that your crossbars face the right way and sit at the paint marks on the side rails. And if you're not carrying anything, taking the crossbars off is the free fix. I cover crossbars and racks in my roof racks guide.
Now if you have a Front Runner Slimsport rack, Front Runner sells a Slimsport rack wind fairing for the 2019 and newer RAV4. The fairing is part RRAC238, and it was $200 when I checked on October 15, 2026. The fairing only fits the Slimsport rack.
Door and window seals
A rush or whistle at the driver's window from about 45 mph up usually means a door or window seal isn't sealing. A 2022 RAV4 owner reported exactly that to the NHTSA, the government's car safety agency. If your RAV4 is still under the 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty, the dealer can check the door's alignment and seals. And 2026 owners have started forum threads about wind noise, which I cover in my 2026 RAV4 problems guide.
The panoramic glass roof
So a broken glass roof is rare, but it's worth knowing about. Two owners, one with a 2019 RAV4 and one with a 2025 RAV4 at 75 mph, heard a bang like a gunshot and then a strange whistle. In both cases the panoramic glass roof had shattered. So if you hear a new whistle right after a bang, pull over and look at the roof.
Normal road noise or a problem? What each sound usually means
| What you hear | Likely cause | Normal? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| A steady roar or hum that gets louder on rough or concrete roads and quieter on smooth asphalt | Tires | Normal | Check tire pressure and look for cupped tread. Quieter tires help the most. |
| A tire roar that slowly got worse over months | Tire wear from bad alignment or skipped rotations | Not normal | Get an alignment and rotate the tires, or replace the tires if they're cupped. |
| A hum or growl that rises with speed and changes when you turn left or right | Wheel bearing | Problem | Have the wheel bearing checked. Kelley Blue Book lists $542 to $618 for one bearing at a dealer on a 2024 RAV4 Hybrid (Bend, Oregon, checked October 15, 2026). |
| On a RAV4 Hybrid, a drone, growl or hum from the back at different speeds | The rear electric motor or the hybrid transmission | Possible problem that Toyota knows about | Ask the dealer about Toyota's tech tips T-TT-0715-22 and T-TT-0726-23, explained below. |
| On a gas 2019 or 2020 RAV4 Adventure or Limited AWD built through October 2019, a buzz or groan around 20 to 30 mph, after 15 or more minutes of driving | The front transfer case clutch in the AWD system | Problem, covered by Toyota | Ask the dealer about Toyota's program 20TE03, explained below. |
| A whistle at highway speed that goes away with the crossbars off | Crossbars | Normal for crossbars | Check the crossbars face the right way, or take the crossbars off when you don't need them. |
| A whistle or rush at the driver's window from 45 mph up | A door or window seal | Worth a dealer visit | Have the dealer check the door seals under warranty. |
| A sudden bang, then a new whistle | The panoramic glass roof broke | Problem | Pull over and look at the roof. |
How to tell tire noise from a bad wheel bearing
So owners on the forums use two checks to tell tire noise from a bad wheel bearing. The two checks are owner advice, not a Toyota procedure, but they're a good start before you go to the dealer.
- Drive on a different road surface. If the noise changes a lot between rough and smooth pavement, the noise is most likely the tires.
- Take a long, sweeping turn each way. If the noise gets louder turning one way and quieter turning the other, a wheel bearing is more likely.
Toyota's bulletins for RAV4 noises, 2019 to 2026
So when Toyota knows about a problem and has a repair for it, Toyota sends dealers a technical service bulletin, usually called a TSB. A tech tip is a shorter note to dealer technicians, and a Customer Support Program is extra coverage Toyota adds for one known problem.
The list below has the main Toyota bulletins about road, wind and drivetrain noise for the 2019 to 2026 RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime. Toyota also has tech tips on brake squeaks and hybrid startup sounds, which my RAV4 Hybrid sounds guide covers. Something important to note is that none of the Toyota bulletins for the 2019 to 2026 RAV4 covers wind noise. Toyota's one bulletin about crossbar wind noise, T-SB-0103-13, is from 2013 and only covers the 2014 4Runner.
- Tech tip T-TT-0715-22, for the 2019 to 2023 RAV4 Hybrid. The tech tip covers a growl or hum from the hybrid transmission or the rear electric motor at different speeds. Toyota tells the dealer to open a case with Toyota and record a video showing the speedometer when the noise happens.
- Tech tip T-TT-0726-23, for the 2021 to 2023 RAV4 Hybrid. The tech tip covers a drone, growl or hum from the rear electric motor.
- Customer Support Program 20TE03, for the gas 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Adventure and Limited AWD built through October 2019. The program covers a buzz or groan at 20 to 30 mph speeding up, or 20 to 13 mph slowing down, after 15 or more minutes of driving. Toyota replaces the front transfer case clutch for 10 years or 125,000 miles.
- T-SB-0014-23, for the 2019 to 2021 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid and the 2021 RAV4 Prime. The bulletin covers a rattle from the sunroof when the sunroof is tilted open on a bumpy road. The dealer repair is under warranty.
- T-SB-0084-21, for the 2019 to 2022 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid and the 2021 and 2022 RAV4 Prime. The bulletin covers sloshing in the doors from drain holes blocked by wax or debris. The dealer cleans the drains on all four doors under the 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.
- T-SB-0077-19, for early-built 2019 RAV4 Hybrids. The bulletin covers a flutter or rattle from the hybrid battery's cooling fan. The fix is a new air intake duct for the battery, under the 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.
- T-SB-0098-24, for the 2022 to 2024 RAV4. The bulletin covers a high-pitched whine with the heater or A/C fan on. The dealer adds a cover to the heater.
- T-SB-0001-22, for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. The bulletin covers a squeal or squeak from the front brakes with light to moderate braking. The dealer fits a new anti-squeal shim kit under the 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty.
Fixes for RAV4 road noise, from best evidence to least
1. Quieter tires
So quieter tires have the best evidence of any fix. The Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 and Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus, two common 2019 to 2025 factory tires, score 5.2 and 6.7 for noise in Tire Rack's survey, and the quiet touring tires score 8.7 to 9.1. The prices below are per tire, across all sizes at Discount Tire, checked October 15, 2026.
- Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3, $190 to $333 per tire. The Scorpion AS Plus 3 scores 9.1 for noise from 24 million owner miles, so it has the best noise score and the biggest sample behind it.
- Yokohama Geolandar CV G058, $167 to $268 per tire. The Geolandar CV G058 scores 8.7 for noise from 2.8 million owner miles.
- Continental CrossContact LX25, which scores 8.9. Continental's own page for the LX25 is gone, but tire stores still sell it in the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 sizes, and my RAV4 replacement tires guide has the prices by size. The newer Continental CrossContact RX is $183 to $441 per tire, with an 8.2 noise score.
- Michelin CrossClimate2, $196 to $500 per tire. The CrossClimate2 is the all-weather tire I recommend in my snow tires guide if you only get a few snow days a year. Tire Rack scores the CrossClimate2 in its all-weather survey, not the touring survey these scores come from, so its noise score isn't a fair match.
- Michelin Defender2 ($180 to $327 per tire) and Bridgestone Turanza EverDrive ($170 to $267 per tire). Both are sold as quiet touring tires, but neither has a survey noise score.
2. Fix the crossbars
So fixing the crossbars costs nothing. Take the crossbars off when you're not carrying anything, and check they face the right way at the paint marks on the rails. Toyota's own Roof Rack Cross Bars (part PT278-42192) list for $200 on Toyota's parts site, checked October 15, 2026. I cover other crossbars on my roof racks page.
3. Door seal strips
Now some owners stick a D-shaped rubber strip along the door frame so the strip meets the factory door seal. Two owners on YouTube got different results. Rav4Gen5 says the strip helps, but "this is a rav4 it is not a lexus." Bullet Solano tried a Taco Marine seal on their front doors, heard only a small difference and wasn't impressed. Neither owner measured the noise.
And Rav4Gen5 also says a strip that's too thick makes the doors hard to close, and their doors stayed stiff for a couple of months. The door seal strips below are on Amazon, checked October 15, 2026:
- alophoty D-shaped rubber weather stripping, 20 feet, $19.99, rated 4.2 out of 5. The alophoty strip is a generic D-shaped strip like the one in Rav4Gen5's video.
- Automotive Weatherstripping for Toyota RAV4 2019 to 2025, 4 doors, 16 meters, $36.99, in stock, with no ratings yet.
- Carory RAV4 Door Seal Kit, listed at $36.99 but currently unavailable, rated 3.7 out of 5 from 61 ratings.
- Taco Marine weather seal, the brand Bullet Solano used. The video doesn't show the exact product, so this link is an Amazon search for the brand.
4. Sound deadening
So sound deadening means sticking heavy butyl mats, a thick sticky rubber, to the metal floor, doors and wheel wells. Basically, it's a weekend of pulling the interior apart. And there are no published before and after decibel numbers for sound deadening on a 2019 or newer RAV4.
Second Skin says treating the wheel wells cuts 3 to 5 decibels, but doesn't say how it tested that. And Second Skin's RAV4 page only covers the 2014 and 2015 RAV4. A Car Sound Deadening Solutions video shows a full RAV4 job on the floor, doors, cargo area and wheel arches. The video explains that the RAV4's open cargo area lets rear wheel-arch noise into the cabin.
So if you want to try it, two butyl mats you can buy are the KILMAT and the Second Skin. The KILMAT 50 mil sound deadening mat, 50 square feet, is $69.99 on Amazon, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 26,727 ratings. The Second Skin Damplifier Pro is $15.25 per 1.67-square-foot sheet, and Second Skin recommends covering about 60 percent of the area. Both prices were checked October 15, 2026.
5. A dealer visit
And for a new whistle or hum while you're under the 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty, or anything that matches the Toyota bulletins above, the dealer is the fix.
Videos worth watching on RAV4 road noise
So these four videos are worth watching if you want to see and hear the RAV4 noise sources for yourself.
Two brothers who measure the sound level of every car they review rank their 10 quietest compact SUVs, with readings taken at 55 mph.
- How to read the decibel numbers: They explain that a 1 decibel gap is about the smallest difference most people notice, and that the 3 decibel spread across their top 10 is a big difference.
- Where the RAV4 landed: A 2024 RAV4 Adventure measured 56.1 decibels, ninth of their top 10. The RAV4 came in behind the Honda CR-V at 55.2 and ahead of the Mitsubishi Outlander.
- The quietest and the loudest: The quietest compact SUVs they'd tested were the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid at 53.2. The loudest was a Honda CR-V LX at 60.
- Crossbars and trim: They say the trim changes the reading, and that installed crossbars are one of the things that raise their readings the most.
A RAV4 owner shows a trick for a growl that sounds like driving over the grooves in highway pavement. The owner's RAV4 year, trim and powertrain aren't stated.
- What the owner blames: They think the growl comes from a bearing in the rear differential or the transfer case, the parts that send power to the back wheels.
- The owner's trick: When the growl starts around 45 mph, they push the shifter sideways out of D into the position they call 3, then back to D once they're above about 50 mph. They say the growl isn't a safety or mechanical problem, and the trick doesn't fix it for good.
- Check Toyota's program first: On a gas 2019 or 2020 RAV4 Adventure or Limited AWD, Toyota's Customer Support Program 20TE03 covers a front transfer case fix for 10 years or 125,000 miles. So I'd have the dealer check before living with the growl.
An owner of a 2019 to 2021 RAV4 shows how they added a D-shaped weather strip to cut wind noise.
- How the owner installs the strip: They stick a D-shaped self-adhesive rubber strip along the door frame in one long piece, so the strip meets the factory door seal.
- What the owner says the strip does: They say the strip helps, but you won't get a perfectly quiet cabin from a RAV4.
- What to watch for: They say the height of the strip matters. And their doors were springy and hard to close for a couple of months afterward.
- What the video doesn't show: They don't measure the noise before and after, and they don't name the strip they used.
A 2021 RAV4 owner tries a door seal strip and gets a weaker result than Rav4Gen5.
- What Bullet Solano installed: They put a Taco Marine weather seal on the front doors.
- Bullet Solano's result: They drive at 50 to 60 mph the next day, hear a little less wind noise, and say they're really not impressed.
- What Bullet Solano blames instead: They think most of their wind noise comes from the glass and their crossbars. So together with the Rav4Gen5 video, Bullet Solano's video shows a door seal strip is hit or miss.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the RAV4 isn't a luxury SUV, but it isn't unusually loud either. It's about average for a compact SUV, and about 1 decibel behind a CR-V Hybrid.
And if your RAV4 sounds loud, I'd start with the tires and the crossbars, because that's where most of the noise comes from. Basically, quieter tires at your next tire change are the fix with real evidence behind them.
But some sounds aren't normal. If you hear a hum that changes when you turn, a growl from the back of a RAV4 Hybrid, or a new whistle after a bang, I'd go to the dealer. So hopefully this helps you figure out which noise you're hearing.
Have a question about “RAV4 road noise: how loud is it on the highway, and is something wrong with mine?”?
Ask it here. Every question comes to me first. I answer as many as I can, and each answered question goes on this page with my answer so other RAV4 owners can see it too. I don't ask for your email, so check back on this page for the answer.
