How to use adaptive cruise control and Lane Tracing Assist on your RAV4

Does your RAV4's cruise work in stop-and-go traffic, and why does the wheel jerk? Here's how radar cruise and lane centering work on every RAV4 from 2019 to 2026.

So every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has full-speed radar cruise with stop-and-go, on every trim. Only the 2016 to 2018 RAV4 had the older kind that only works at higher speeds. Radar cruise slows your RAV4 to a stop behind the car ahead, and if that car moves within about 3 seconds, your RAV4 pulls away on its own. After that you press RES or tap the gas. On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 you get 3 following distances and switch to regular cruise by holding the cruise button. The 2026 RAV4 has a mode button and 4 distances. Lane Tracing Assist is the lane centering part, and it only steers while radar cruise is on.

Quick picks

Which radar cruise and lane centering your RAV4 has

So the version of Toyota Safety Sense in your RAV4 decides how many following distances you get and which extra settings you have. Basically, Toyota Safety Sense is Toyota's name for its standard safety package, and it includes radar cruise and lane centering.

2026 Hybrid and Plug-in HybridTSS 4.0Full speed with stop-and-go, standard4Yes, standardEco run mode, acceleration setting, curve speed reduction. Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Change Assist on some trims.

Something to note is that Toyota's Safety Sense web page once listed the RAV4 Hybrid with plain "DRCC," not "Full-Speed Range DRCC." That confused some used shoppers. But Toyota's spec books and owner's manuals list full-speed radar cruise as standard on every 2019 and newer RAV4 trim.

What radar cruise and Lane Tracing Assist are

So radar cruise is cruise control that keeps a gap to the car in front of you. Toyota calls it Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, or DRCC. Basically, a radar behind the Toyota emblem on the front of the RAV4 watches the road ahead, up to about 328 feet on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. And a camera at the top of the windshield helps.

And Lane Tracing Assist, or LTA, is the lane centering. Basically, LTA reads the lane lines and the edge of the road, and gently steers to keep your RAV4 in the middle of the lane. LTA only does that centering while radar cruise is on. Plain cruise doesn't count.

Now LTA also has a lane departure warning built in, which beeps and tugs the wheel when you drift. That part works without cruise. My guide to turning off lane departure on a RAV4 covers that beep and tug. So here I'll stick to lane centering with radar cruise.

How stop-and-go works in traffic

So yes, radar cruise on every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 works in stop-and-go traffic. Here's what happens, step by step.

  1. The car ahead stops, and your RAV4 stops behind it. Toyota says radar cruise stops your RAV4 "at a certain vehicle-to-vehicle distance depending on the situation."
  2. If the car ahead pulls away within about 3 seconds, your RAV4 follows on its own.
  3. If the car ahead takes longer than that, your RAV4 stays stopped. Press RES or tap the gas pedal to go again.
  4. If you're stopped for about 3 minutes, or you open the driver's door or unbuckle your seat belt, radar cruise cancels. On a 2026, Toyota says the parking brake may also come on by itself.

Keep in mind that while radar cruise is holding you at a stop, pressing the brake doesn't cancel it. At any other time, the brake cancels radar cruise.

And radar cruise does not see red lights or stop signs. It only follows another vehicle. So if there's no car ahead of you at a red light, your RAV4 won't stop for the light.

Now owners on RAV4World back this up. Five owners with 2020 RAV4s and 2024 Primes say radar cruise stops fully and pulls away with traffic. 2 of those owners say it stops closer to the car ahead than they like. So if the stop feels too close, set a longer following distance.

How to tell which buttons your RAV4 has

So the easy way to tell is the year. A 2019 to 2025 RAV4 has a cruise on and off button on the right side of the steering wheel. A 2026 RAV4 has a driving assist mode button and a driving assist button instead. And on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the LTA button shows a car between dashed lines.

How to use radar cruise on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4

These steps are the same on the 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4, the Hybrid and the Prime. The buttons sit together on the right side of the steering wheel. Toyota's manual names them like this:

Turn on radar cruise and set your speed

  1. Press the cruise control main switch. The radar cruise light comes on in the gauge screen, which is the screen behind the steering wheel, and you'll see a message like "Radar Cruise Control Active."
  2. Drive up to the speed you want, 20 mph or more, and press -SET. If you set it below 20 mph, it sets 20 mph.
  3. Press +RES to go faster or -SET to go slower. Each press changes your speed by 1 mph, and holding the button keeps changing your speed 1 mph at a time.
  4. Press Cancel or the brake pedal to stop cruising. Press +RES to go back to your set speed.
  5. Press the cruise control main switch again to turn cruise off.

Change the following distance

Press the distance switch, and it cycles through Long, Medium and Short. The gauge screen shows the gap as bars. Here are Toyota's numbers at 50 mph:

SettingGap at 50 mph
LongAbout 160 feet
MediumAbout 130 feet
ShortAbout 100 feet

Keep in mind the gap grows as you go faster and shrinks as you slow down. And Toyota's 2019 to 2020 gas and Hybrid manuals and the 2021 Prime manual say the following distance goes back to Long every time you start the RAV4. Toyota's 2021 to 2022 Hybrid manual, the 2022 to 2024 Prime manuals and the 2023 to 2025 gas and Hybrid manuals don't say either way.

Switch to regular cruise on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4

So regular cruise, which Toyota calls constant speed mode, holds one speed and doesn't slow down for cars ahead. Toyota says to use it only when radar cruise isn't working right, for example because the radar is dirty.

  1. Make sure cruise is off.
  2. Press and hold the cruise control main switch for 1.5 seconds or more. I'd hold it about 2 seconds, until the light changes.
  3. The radar cruise light shows first, then switches to the regular cruise light.
  4. Set your speed the same way, at 20 mph or more.

Some videos and owners say to hold the button about 3 seconds. That works too, since Toyota's rule is 1.5 seconds or more. And regular cruise cancels itself if you drop more than about 10 mph below your set speed, or under about 20 mph.

Now keep in mind lane centering doesn't work in regular cruise. LTA needs radar cruise.

Curve speed reduction on the 2023 to 2024 Prime

So the 2023 to 2024 Prime has a radar cruise setting that no gas or Hybrid RAV4 got until 2026. Basically, curve speed reduction slows the Prime down as you start to turn the wheel, and stops slowing once the wheel is straight again. You set curve speed reduction in the gauge screen settings, on the DRCC line, to High, Low or Off.

How to use radar cruise on a 2026 RAV4

So the 2026 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid work a little differently. Toyota's 2026 manual names these steering wheel buttons:

Pick a cruise mode on a 2026 RAV4

Press the driving assist mode select switch to cycle through 3 modes:

Keep in mind you can swap between Adaptive and Eco run while cruise is on. But Toyota says you can't switch modes while regular Cruise mode is active, so turn regular cruise off first.

Set your speed on a 2026 RAV4

  1. Drive up to 20 mph or more and press the driving assist switch once, quickly and firmly.
  2. Press "+" or "-" to change your speed by 1 mph per press.
  3. Press Cancel, the driving assist switch or the brake to stop cruising. Press RES to go back to your set speed.

Now if you press the driving assist switch over and over, the 2026 can show "Cruise Control Unavailable See Owner's Manual." I explain that message in my guide to Radar Cruise Control Unavailable.

Change the following distance on a 2026 RAV4

The 2026 has 4 following distances instead of 3. Here are Toyota's numbers at 60 mph:

SettingGap at 60 mph
Extra longAbout 200 feet
LongAbout 145 feet
MediumAbout 100 feet
ShortAbout 85 feet

Acceleration and curve speed reduction on a 2026 RAV4

So the 2026 adds two radar cruise settings on the center touchscreen. Go to Settings, the gear icon, then Driving Assist, then Driver Support, then Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Both settings follow your driver profile, which Toyota calls My Settings.

Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Change Assist on some 2026 trims

So some 2026 trims add two more features on top of radar cruise and LTA.

Traffic Jam Assist lets you take your hands off the wheel in a highway traffic jam at about 25 mph or less. Toyota is clear that "Traffic Jam Assist function is not an automated driving system." The Driver Monitor Camera, which watches the driver, has to see you looking ahead. Traffic Jam Assist also adds what Toyota calls extended resume time. On some highways, if the car ahead moves within about 3 minutes, your RAV4 beeps, shows a message and pulls away by itself.

Lane Change Assist steers the lane change for you when you nudge the turn signal with LTA on, between 45 and 90 mph.

On the 2026 Hybrid, Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Change Assist are standard on the Woodland, XSE and Limited. On the 2026 XLE Premium Hybrid, Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Change Assist come in the XLE Driver Assist Package. That package is $650 on Toyota's Build and Price tool (checked Oct 15, 2026). The 2026 Hybrid LE and SE don't have Traffic Jam Assist or Lane Change Assist. On the 2026 Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota's press release lists Traffic Jam Assist on the XSE and Woodland.

Keep in mind Toyota says Traffic Jam Assist needs an active Drive Connect trial or subscription. You can see Toyota's plans on its connected services plans page, and I cover the plans in my Toyota app and connected services guide. For which trims have what, see my 2026 RAV4 trims guide.

How Lane Tracing Assist works with radar cruise

So lane centering only works with radar cruise on. Here's how to use LTA and what the lights mean.

Turn LTA on and off

  1. Press the LTA button on the steering wheel.
  2. Turn on radar cruise and set your speed.
  3. On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, Lane Center also has to be set to On in the gauge screen's LTA settings.
  4. Press the LTA button again to turn LTA off.

Toyota's manual says LTA stays the way you left it the next time you start a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. Now on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, turning LTA off also turns off the lane departure beep and tug. On a 2026, the LTA button only turns lane centering on and off. The 2026 beep and tug are a separate system on the touchscreen. My lane departure guide has every step for that.

What the LTA lights mean

The lights look a little different on the 7-inch and 12.3-inch gauge screens. If you're not sure which screen you have, see my RAV4 gauge screen guide.

When LTA will and won't center

So LTA centers your RAV4 when all of these are true:

And LTA works all the way down to a stop. In a traffic jam where the lines are hard to see, LTA steers by following the car ahead.

Keep your hands on the wheel. If you let go, the RAV4 warns you, then LTA cancels. Toyota says each warning buzzer lasts longer than the last one. On a 2026 with Lane Change Assist, a touch sensor in the wheel checks your hands. So gloves, a wheel cover or holding only the spokes can set off the warning.

LTA messages

For radar and camera messages, see my guide to Radar Cruise Control Unavailable.

Why LTA tugs or jerks the wheel

So here are the 6 causes Toyota's manuals and a Toyota tech tip point to.

  1. The lane departure tug, not lane centering. On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, even with cruise off, LTA gives a short tug when you drift, at about 32 mph and up. On a 2026, that tug comes from the separate lane departure system. A lot of owners call that tug "jerking." You can always steer against it. My lane departure guide shows how to soften it or turn it off.
  2. Following the car ahead. When the lines are faint, LTA steers by the car in front. Toyota says "if the preceding vehicle moves, your vehicle may move in the same way." So if that car drifts or takes an exit, your RAV4 can follow it.
  3. Exit ramps, splits and missing lines. LTA reads lane lines and the edge of the road. Where the right line peels off at an exit, LTA can follow it. Toyota also lists faint, repainted or double lines, shadows, tar seams, merges and splits as places LTA may not work right.
  4. LTA dropping out. When LTA can't keep centering, it cancels with a double beep and the wheel goes light. That can feel like a twitch, mostly on curves and where lines go missing.
  5. Your turn signal. Turning on your turn signal stops LTA from centering. One owner had their signal cancel itself on a curved on-ramp, and LTA switched back on in the middle of the curve.
  6. The camera aim or the steering sensor. After a new windshield, the camera has to be recalibrated. And Toyota tech tip T-TT-0616-20, for the 2019 to 2021 RAV4 and Hybrid, covers pulling or drifting that's more noticeable with LTA and radar cruise on. The dealer fix is a steering angle sensor calibration.

Now on RAV4World, about 6 owners describe their RAV4 wandering in the lane or following exit ramps with lane centering on. Most of them drive 2019 to 2022 RAV4s with TSS 2.0. And 2 to 3 owners with TSS 2.5 say lane centering is smooth for them. Toyota hasn't said TSS 2.5 tracks better, so that's owner opinion.

Why radar cruise sometimes brakes when the car ahead turns off. So one 2021 owner explains a common gripe. When the car ahead slowly moves into a turn lane, the RAV4 brakes until that car is all the way over. The fix is to press the gas a little, which overrides radar cruise, or tap the brake and press RES. And if a car cuts in and radar cruise can't slow enough, the gauge screen flashes and a buzzer sounds, so brake yourself. My RAV4 beeps guide covers that beep.

Radar cruise in snow, ice and rain

So Toyota says not to use radar cruise on slippery roads, including rain, ice and snow. And when snow or ice covers the emblem, radar cruise stops and shows "Radar Cruise Control Unavailable."

Toyota's fix for a dirty radar is regular cruise. But regular cruise doesn't belong on a slippery road either, and Toyota's 2026 manual says so. So I'd only switch to regular cruise when the radar is blocked and the road is dry, like salt spray on a clear highway.

My Radar Cruise Control Unavailable guide shows how to clean the emblem and the windshield. And for winter driving in general, see my RAV4 in snow guide.

When Toyota says not to use radar cruise

So Toyota's manuals list these places not to use radar cruise:

It's worth noting the "heavy traffic" line, since radar cruise is built to stop and go. Owners use it in jams anyway, and one says "In Chicago traffic it works great." So that's Toyota's advice, and the choice is yours. For towing, see my RAV4 towing guide.

And radar cruise can miss some vehicles: cars cutting in suddenly, very slow cars, cars not in your lane, trailers with small backs, and motorcycles. It may also not work right on curves, in narrow lanes, in tunnels or on bridges.

What changed on the 2026 RAV4

So if you're deciding between a 2025 and a 2026, here's what TSS 4.0 changed for radar cruise and lane centering:

Buddy's take

So ultimately, every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has full-speed radar cruise that works in stop-and-go traffic, on every trim. And Lane Tracing Assist steers only while radar cruise is on.

For me personally, if the stop feels too close, I'd use a longer following distance. And if the wheel tugs, I'd first check whether the tug comes from the lane departure warning or from lane centering, before turning anything off.

So hopefully this helps you get comfortable with radar cruise and lane centering on your RAV4.
