Every RAV4 beep, and whether you can turn it off
So this table lists every RAV4 beep and chime, roughly in the order you'd hear them: when you start off, driving, parking, and getting out. The 2019 to 2025 column covers the gas, Hybrid and Prime. The 2026 column covers the 2026 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, since there's no gas 2026.
And when the table says "dealer only," it means there's no switch for that beep on your screens, but a Toyota dealer can change that beep with their own equipment. The steps for each screen are right below the table.
| Beep or chime | What sets the beep off | What the beep sounds like | Turn it off on 2019 to 2025? | Turn it off on 2026? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driver's seat belt | You turn the RAV4 on, or start driving, without the driver's seat belt buckled. | A chime when you turn the car on, then beeping on and off for a while once you pass a certain speed. A red seat belt light shows too. | No. There's no switch for any seat belt chime. Why | No. |
| Front passenger seat belt | The passenger seat's weight sensor thinks someone is sitting there, the belt isn't buckled, and the car is moving. A heavy bag or a dog can set the passenger seat belt chime off. | Beeping on and off for a while once you pass a certain speed. | No. | No. |
| Back seat belts | A back seat belt was buckled and then unbuckled while the car is moving. | Beeping on and off for a while. | No. On 2019 to 2022, Toyota lists the back seat belt chime as "if equipped." | No. |
| Open door, hood or liftgate | You start driving, at about 3 mph, with a door, the hood or the liftgate not fully shut. | A buzzer, with a picture of the open door on the gauge screen behind the steering wheel. | No. | No. |
| Parking brake left on | You drive off, at about 3 mph, with the parking brake still on. | A buzzer and a "Parking Brake ON" message. | No. | No. |
| Lane departure alert | You drift over a lane line without your turn signal on, at about 32 mph or faster (30 mph on 2026). | A buzzer, with an orange lane line flashing on the gauge screen. | Only by turning off Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) with the LTA button on the steering wheel. On US RAV4s, LTA stays off after a restart. Setting the LTA sensitivity to Standard makes the beep come later, but doesn't stop the beep. The gas and Hybrid have no silent or vibrate option, but the 2023 to 2025 Prime can switch the beep to a steering wheel vibration. Lane departure guide | Yes. On the center touchscreen, pick Vibration, Audible, or both, or turn Lane Departure Alert (LDA) off. |
| Hands off the steering wheel | You take your hands off the wheel while the steering assist is working. | Beeps that get longer each time, with a "hold the steering wheel" picture. | Only by turning off LTA with the LTA button on the steering wheel. | Only by turning off LDA or LTA. |
| Sway warning | The RAV4 weaves back and forth inside the lane. | A buzzer and a coffee cup style "take a rest" message. | Yes. Sway Warning has its own On/Off and sensitivity on the gauge screen. | Yes, as "Driver break suggestion," on RAV4s with the driver monitor camera. |
| Pre-collision warning | The Pre-Collision System (PCS) sees a high chance of hitting something ahead. | Loud, fast beeping and "BRAKE!" on the gauge screen. | You can set the warning timing to Early, Middle or Late. You can turn PCS off, but PCS turns back on every time you start the car. | Same as 2019 to 2025. |
| Speed limit and Do Not Enter alerts | Road Sign Assist (RSA) sees you're over the speed limit by the amount you set, or that you're entering a Do Not Enter road. | A beep and a flashing sign on the gauge screen. | Yes. Set the RSA notification to display only, or to no notification. | Yes. "Speed Limit Caution" and "No entry caution" each go to Visual, Visual and Audible, or Off. |
| Cruise control too close | With radar cruise control on, the car ahead is too close for cruise to slow down enough on its own. | A beep and a flashing cruise display. | No. | No. |
| Blind Spot Monitor | On the 2026, you turn your signal on toward a lane with a car in your blind spot. | On the 2026, a beep along with the light in the side mirror. | There's nothing to turn off. On 2019 to 2025, the Blind Spot Monitor only lights up the side mirror and doesn't beep. | Yes, "Buzzer warning" On/Off. But turning the buzzer off also hides the blind spot icon on the screen. |
| Downshift refused | You try to shift down a gear yourself and the RAV4 won't allow it. | Two beeps. | No. | No. |
| Power button pressed while driving | You press the power button while the RAV4 is moving. | A beep and a message. | No. | No. |
| EV mode not available | On a Hybrid, you press the EV mode button when EV mode can't come on, or EV mode shuts off on its own. | A beep and a message. | No. | No. |
| Hybrid left in N, or hybrid battery low | A Hybrid is left in N, or the hybrid battery's charge is getting low. | Beeping on and off, then a steady beep if the charge drops further. | No. | No. |
| Parking sensors | Something is close to the front or back bumper while you're going under about 6 mph. | Beeps that speed up as you get closer, then a solid tone within about 1.1 feet (1.0 foot on 2026). | Yes. On/Off stays off after a restart, volume goes from 1 to 3, and a mute button shows while the sensors are beeping. Parking switches guide | Yes. On/Off stays off, volume is Soft, Normal or Loud, and mute is on the touchscreen. RAV4s with the parking sensor detection indicator turn the sensors back on when you shift into R. |
| Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) | You're in reverse and a car is coming from the side (on 2026, a car or a bike). | Beeps, with the lights in both side mirrors flashing. | Yes, with RCTA On/Off. The volume, 1 to 3, is shared with the parking sensors. On 2023 to 2025, RCTA turns itself back on every time you start the car. Why | Yes, but RCTA turns itself back on every time you start the car. |
| Automatic parking brake (PKSB) | Parking Support Brake (PKSB) thinks you're about to hit something at parking speed. | A short beep with "BRAKE!" On the 2026, a continuous long beep. | Yes, with the PKSB switch, and PKSB stays off. PKSB guide | Yes. On the 2026, the PKSB beep still sounds when PKSB brakes, even with the parking sensors turned off. |
| Rear Camera Detection (2026) | You're in reverse and the camera sees a person behind the RAV4. | 3 beeps, or repeated beeps if the person is closer, with a walking person icon. | The 2019 to 2025 RAV4 doesn't have Rear Camera Detection. | Yes, but Rear Camera Detection turns itself back on every time you start the car. |
| Reverse warning buzzer (2026) | You shift into R. | A beep inside the car. Toyota doesn't describe the pattern. | Toyota's 2019 to 2025 manuals don't list a reverse warning buzzer. More on reverse beeps | Dealer only. |
| Hybrid pedestrian warning sound | A Hybrid, Prime or 2026 is moving with the gas engine off, under about 22 mph, including when you back up. | A whirring tone that rises as you speed up, played outside the car. | No. | No. The 2026 manual says you may hear it inside too. |
| Brake hold | Brake hold switches over to the parking brake, or brake hold gives another warning, like on a steep hill. | A beep and a message. | No. | No. |
| Headlights left on | The car is off, the headlights are still on, and you open the driver's door. | A buzzer. | Dealer only. | Toyota's 2026 manual doesn't list a switch for the headlight reminder. |
| Window or moonroof left open | The car is off, a window or the moonroof is open, and you open the driver's door. | A buzzer and a message. | Dealer only. | Toyota's 2026 manual doesn't list a switch for the window or moonroof reminder. |
| Key left in (RAV4s without a smart key) | You open the driver's door with the key still in and the car in OFF or ACC. | A buzzer. | No. | Toyota's 2026 manual doesn't list a key reminder beep. |
| Rear seat reminder | You turn the RAV4 off after opening a back door during the drive, or within 10 minutes before you started (15 minutes on 2026). | A buzzer and a "check rear seat" message for about 6 seconds. The 2026 adds a second round of beeps, with the hazard lights flashing, when you lock the doors. | Yes, on the gauge screen. The rear seat reminder is on the 2022 Hybrid and later, but not on the 2020. Steps | Yes, on the gauge screen or the touchscreen. |
| Safe Exit Assist (2026) | You open a door while a car or bike is coming up from behind. | A beep and a voice warning. | The 2019 to 2025 RAV4 doesn't have Safe Exit Assist. | Yes, but Safe Exit Assist turns itself back on every time you start the car. You can also set the sensitivity to Low, Mid or High. |
| Lock and unlock beep | You lock or unlock with the key fob or the door handle. | One short beep outside the car when you lock, and two when you unlock. | Yes. Set the volume from 1 to 7, or off, on the center touchscreen. Steps | Yes. "Operation buzzer volume" goes from 0, which is off, to 7 on the touchscreen. |
| Locking with another door open | You try to lock with the smart key while another door is still open. | A steady beep outside the car for 5 seconds. | Dealer only. | Dealer only. |
| Power liftgate | The power liftgate starts to open or close. | A beep when the liftgate starts moving, and beeps the whole time it moves if a dealer turned that on. | Partly. You can set the liftgate beep volume from 1 to 3 on the gauge screen. The beeps the whole time the liftgate moves are off from the factory, and only a dealer can turn those on or off. Toyota says the beep when the liftgate starts can't be turned off. Liftgate guide | Dealer only. |
| Beeping outside in a car wash | The key is inside and the wet door handle makes the RAV4 think you're touching the handle. | A beep outside the car. | Lock the doors and the beeping stops. Car wash checklist | Same as 2019 to 2025. |
| Memory seat | You save or recall a seat position with the memory buttons. | One beep when the position saves, and a steady 3-second beep if saving fails. Memory seat guide | No. | No. |
| Warning lights | A problem with the brakes, engine temperature, oil pressure, power steering, the hybrid system, or a safety system. | One beep or a steady beep, with a red or yellow light and a message. | No. What each light means | No. |
And something to note is that the low fuel light doesn't come with a beep in any of Toyota's RAV4 manuals. Toyota lists the low fuel light as a light only, which comes on with about 2.2 gallons left on 2019 to 2025 and about 2.5 gallons on the 2026 Hybrid.
Where the beep switches are on each RAV4
So the switches for most beeps are on the gauge screen, which is the screen behind the steering wheel, not the big touchscreen in the middle of the dash. You get around the gauge screen with the arrow buttons and the OK button on the left side of the steering wheel. My digital speedometer guide goes through those buttons if you've never used them.
2019 to 2022 RAV4, and 2023 to 2025 with the 7-inch gauge screen
So if your 2023 to 2025 has needle gauges on each side of the gauge screen, you have the 7-inch screen. Every 2019 to 2022 RAV4 uses these same steps.
- Press the arrow buttons on the steering wheel until you reach the gear icon, which is the settings screen.
- Press the up or down arrow to highlight the feature, for example LTA, PCS, RCTA or the parking sensors.
- Press OK to switch that feature on or off.
- Press and hold OK to open that feature's detailed settings, like the volume or sensitivity.
2023 to 2025 RAV4 with the 12.3-inch gauge screen
So the 12.3-inch screen is the all-digital gauge screen, with no needle gauges. On the 12.3-inch screen, you press and hold OK first to bring up a cursor in the middle of the screen. Then you pick the gear icon, and then the feature you want to change.
Center touchscreen, 2019 to 2025
- On 2019 to 2022, the lock beep volume is under MENU, then Setup, then Vehicle, then Vehicle Customization.
- On 2023 to 2025, the lock beep volume is under the Settings gear, then Vehicle customize.
- On 2023 to 2025, the click sound when you tap the touchscreen is called "Screen beep." The Screen beep switch is under Settings, then General, then Accessibility.
2026 RAV4
Now on the 2026, most of the beep switches moved to the center touchscreen. The 2026 beep switches are under Settings, then Vehicle or Driving Assist. And the volume of all the driving-assist sounds is under Settings, then General, then Volume, then Driving assist.
The 2026 gauge screen still has a Vehicle Settings menu. That menu has the Rear Seat Reminder switch and a setting called "Warning buzzer volume." Basically, Warning buzzer volume turns all the warning beeps up or down at once, from Level 1 to Level 3. Toyota notes the volume may still sound different from one warning to another.
And keep in mind that the 2026 saves a lot of these settings per driver in "My Settings," for up to 3 drivers, tied to each driver's key or phone. So each driver's beep settings can be different.
- The reverse warning buzzer.
- The rear seat reminder, which you can also switch on the screens.
- The beep when you try to lock with a door open, which Toyota calls the Half-Door Warning Buzzer.
- Turning the lock beep off completely, and its volume.
- The power liftgate beeps and their volume.
- The Blind Spot Monitor alert options.
Why does my RAV4 beep when I back up?
So on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, a beep when you back up is almost always one of two things. If the beeps get faster as you get closer to something, that's the parking sensors. If the beeps come with the side mirror lights flashing, that's Rear Cross Traffic Alert warning you about a car coming from the side.
Toyota's 2019 to 2025 manuals don't list a reverse beep inside the car, either as a switch on the screens or as a dealer setting. And one RAV4World thread says North American RAV4s from 2019 on don't beep in reverse from the factory. The same thread says dealer-installed parking sensors give one short beep when you first shift into R.
The Hybrid and Prime "spaceship" sound in reverse
Now if you have a Hybrid or Prime and hear a whirring or rising tone when you back up, that's not a beep meant for you. Basically, it's the pedestrian warning sound. When the gas engine is off and you're going under about 22 mph, the RAV4 plays that sound outside the car so people nearby can hear it coming. A gas RAV4 doesn't make the pedestrian warning sound.
Owners on RAV4World describe the pedestrian warning sound as an "alien spaceship" or "angelic" tone that they hear inside the car too. And the pedestrian warning sound can't be turned off. Torque News reported in 2022 that the only way around the sound is hacking the car. One RAV4World owner said a dealer can set the reverse sound to one beep, but Toyota's manuals don't list any setting like that.
The 2026 reverse beeps
The 2026 adds two reverse beeps of its own. Rear Camera Detection beeps 3 times, or keeps beeping, when the camera sees a person behind you. And Toyota's 2026 manual lists a "Reverse Warning Buzzer," a beep inside the car that only a Toyota dealer can turn on or off. The 2026 manual doesn't say whether the Reverse Warning Buzzer is on from the factory, or what it sounds like.
So ultimately, if the reverse beeping bugs you, the parking sensor beeps can be turned off or muted. That's on the gauge screen on 2019 to 2025, and on the touchscreen on the 2026. I go through which switch does what in my guide to the parking switches and automatic braking, since turning off the parking beeps doesn't turn off the automatic braking.
Why Rear Cross Traffic Alert keeps turning itself back on
So if you turn off Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) on a 2023 to 2025 or a 2026, RCTA comes back on the next time you start the car. And that's how Toyota built RCTA. Toyota's manuals for those years say RCTA turns itself back on at every start. Toyota's 2020 manual doesn't say either way.
Basically, RCTA is the system that watches for cars coming from the side while you back out of a parking space.
But if you just want RCTA quieter, there are two things you can do:
- You can turn the volume down. The RCTA volume is shared with the parking sensors, so one setting changes both. The RCTA and parking sensor volume is Level 1 to 3 on 2019 to 2025, and Soft, Normal or Loud on the 2026.
- You can use the mute button. When the beeping starts, a mute button shows on the gauge screen (on 2019 to 2025) or the touchscreen (on 2026). Mute silences the parking sensors and RCTA together. The parking sensor and RCTA beeps come back on when you shift, speed up, or restart the car.
And the parking sensors and PKSB work differently from RCTA. Once you turn the parking sensors or PKSB off, the parking sensors and PKSB stay off after a restart. The one exception is a 2026 with the parking sensor detection indicator, which turns the parking sensors back on when you shift into R.
The rear seat reminder: the beep when you turn the car off
So if your RAV4 beeps and shows "check rear seat" when you turn the RAV4 off, that's the rear seat reminder. Basically, the RAV4 remembers if you opened a back door during the drive, or within 10 minutes before you started (15 minutes on the 2026). Then when you turn the RAV4 off, the RAV4 beeps and shows the message for about 6 seconds.
And keep in mind that the rear seat reminder can't actually see a child or a bag. The rear seat reminder only knows a back door was opened. So the rear seat reminder goes off for groceries too, and the reminder can miss things if you never opened a back door. Toyota also says opening and closing a door within about 2 seconds may not count.
The 2026's extra beeps when you lock
The 2026 adds a second reminder. When you lock the doors, the 2026 beeps again, flashes the hazard lights and shows a message. Steven Welch, a Toyota dealer, describes this second reminder as five or six extra beeps in the video below. And the 2026 skips the second reminder if you opened a back door before locking.
How to turn the rear seat reminder off
- On the gauge screen, press the arrow buttons on the steering wheel to reach the gear icon. On the 12.3-inch screen, press and hold OK first to bring up the cursor.
- Scroll down to Vehicle Settings, then press and hold OK.
- Pick Rear Seat Reminder and press OK to turn the rear seat reminder off. Press OK again to turn the rear seat reminder back on.
On the 2026, the Rear Seat Reminder switch is in the gauge screen's Vehicle Settings too, and also on the touchscreen.
Something to note is that the rear seat reminder shows up in Toyota's 2022 RAV4 Hybrid manual and every manual after that. Toyota's 2020 RAV4 manuals don't have it. So if your 2020 doesn't show a Rear Seat Reminder line, that's why.
How to turn off the beep when you lock your RAV4
So your RAV4 beeps once when you lock and twice when you unlock. That beep is just a confirmation that the doors locked. And on every year, you can turn the lock beep down or off yourself.
- On 2019 to 2022, go to MENU, then Setup, then Vehicle, then Vehicle Customization on the center touchscreen. The lock beep volume goes from 1 to 7, or off.
- On 2023 to 2025, tap the Settings gear on the touchscreen, then Vehicle customize. Steve Clifford, a Toyota dealer, shows the lock beep under Door control, as "Feedback tone," and slides the Feedback tone all the way down to turn the beep off.
- On 2026, look for "Operation buzzer volume" in the touchscreen settings. Setting the Operation buzzer volume to 0 turns the lock beep off.
Keep in mind that the steady 5-second beep when you try to lock with another door open is a different beep, and only a Toyota dealer can turn the door-open lock beep off.
- On 2019 to 2025, Toyota's manuals call the door-open lock beep the "Open door reminder buzzer (When locking the vehicle)." It's on from the factory, and the manuals list it as a dealer-only setting.
- On 2026, Toyota's dealer-only list calls the door-open lock beep the "Half-Door Warning Buzzer Function."
Now every year also has a touchscreen setting in the key fob (wireless remote) settings called "Locking operation when door opened," or "Locking operation when the door is open" on the 2026. You can switch that touchscreen setting on or off yourself, and on 2019 to 2025 it's on from the factory. But Toyota's manuals don't say what the setting changes, or whether turning it off stops the door-open lock beep. So the dealer is still the only sure way to turn the door-open lock beep off.
Why the seat belt chime can't be turned off
So none of Toyota's RAV4 manuals, from 2020 to 2026, give owners a way to turn off any seat belt chime. And a dealer told one 2024 owner the same thing.
Basically, the driver's seat belt warning is required by U.S. federal law. And NHTSA, the federal agency for car safety, finalized a rule in December 2024 that requires back seat belt warnings and stronger front seat warnings. New cars have to meet the front seat part by September 1, 2026, and the back seat part by September 1, 2027. So the seat belt chimes on newer RAV4s are going to get more insistent, not less.
But the two seat belt chimes owners ask about most each have a simple cause:
- The front passenger chime with a bag or a dog on the seat. The passenger seat has a weight sensor, and Toyota's manual says luggage on the front passenger seat can set off the passenger seat belt chime even with nobody sitting there. So putting heavy bags on the floor or in the back, and the dog in the back seat, stops the passenger chime.
- The back seat chime that won't stop. On the 2023 to 2025 and the 2026, the back seat chime only sounds if a back seat belt was buckled and then unbuckled while you're moving. So a dog in the back seat won't set the back seat chime off on its own. And a car seat installed with the seat belt keeps that belt buckled.
Lane departure, automatic braking and warning lights
Now three kinds of beeps have their own guides, so I'll just point you to them:
- Lane departure beeps. On a 2019 to 2025 gas or Hybrid, the lane departure beep can't be silenced on its own, so you either turn off LTA with the steering wheel button or set the sensitivity to Standard so the beep comes later. My lane departure guide has the steps for every year, including the 2026's vibrate option.
- Parking beeps and automatic braking. My automatic braking guide shows which switch controls the beeps and which one controls the braking.
- Beeps with a red or yellow light. Beeps that come with a red or yellow light mean something needs attention, and those beeps can't be turned off. My warning lights guide explains what each light means and what to do, including messages like "Pre-Collision System Unavailable."
Videos that show these beeps and switches
A Toyota dealer explains what sets off the rear seat reminder and turns the reminder off on a RAV4 with the 12.3-inch gauge screen.
- What sets the reminder off: They say the "check rear seat" message comes up after you open a back door, whether you put a child, a briefcase or groceries back there.
- What the reminder isn't: They explain the reminder isn't looking for a child. It's just reminding you that a back door was opened.
- The steps: They scroll with the steering wheel arrows to the settings, go down to Vehicle Settings, press and hold the center button, and switch Rear Seat Reminder off.
- Older RAV4s: They say RAV4s with the smaller gauge screen work the same way, and the screen just looks different.
The same dealer explains the extra beeps some newer Toyotas make when you lock the doors.
- When the extra beeps happen: They say if you opened a back door during the trip, the car beeps five or six times when you lock it after getting out.
- What the extra beeps mean: They explain it's the rear seat reminder, telling you to check for things like milk, a briefcase or a kid.
- Which model: They don't name the model in the video. Toyota's 2026 RAV4 manual describes this same second reminder at lock.
A Toyota dealer turns off the lock beep on a Toyota with the same touchscreen as the 2023 to 2025 RAV4.
- The beeps: They show one beep when the car locks and two when it unlocks.
- The steps: They tap the settings gear, then Vehicle customize, then Door control, scroll past the auto relock timer and the feedback light, and slide "Feedback tone" all the way down.
- The result: After that, the car locks and unlocks with the lights flashing but no beep.
- Which Toyotas: They say the steps apply to most Toyotas from the last several years.
The same dealer stops the beep when you go over the speed limit, using the same gauge-screen steps as a 2019 to 2025 RAV4.
- The beep: They show the car beeping when you go over the speed limit, which is Road Sign Assist (RSA).
- The steps: They go to the settings on the gauge screen, pick RSA, press and hold to open the RSA settings, then pick Notification method, then Over speed limit.
- The result: They set Over speed limit to No notification, and the car stops beeping when you speed.
What this guide doesn't cover
This guide doesn't cover the charging sounds on the RAV4 Prime and the 2026 Plug-in Hybrid. For the driving-assist beeps, the Prime uses the same safety systems and gauge-screen menus as the 2019 to 2025 Hybrid. So the Prime works the same way as the Hybrid in the table above, except that the 2023 to 2025 Prime can switch the lane departure beep to a steering wheel vibration. And Toyota doesn't say exactly how many times or how long the seat belt chimes beep, only that they beep "for a certain period of time."
Buddy's take
So ultimately, most RAV4 beeps are either telling you something simple, like a door is open, or warning you about something around the car. And the beeps you hear every day, like the lock beep, the rear seat reminder and the speed limit beep, are all easy to turn down or off yourself.
For me personally, I'd leave the safety beeps on and just lower the volume. On 2019 to 2025, the parking sensor and RCTA volume is one setting. And on the 2026, the Warning buzzer volume turns all the warning beeps down at once.
So hopefully this helps you figure out which beep is which, and quiet the ones you don't need.
