Which RAV4s have Digital Key
So the table below shows each 2026 RAV4 trim and whether that trim has Digital Key. The table is from Toyota's spec data and Toyota's 2026 connected services chart, both checked October 15, 2026.
| 2026 RAV4 trim | Digital Key |
|---|---|
| Hybrid LE | Not available |
| Hybrid SE | Not available |
| Hybrid XLE Premium | Standard |
| Hybrid Woodland | Standard |
| Hybrid XSE | Standard |
| Hybrid Limited | Standard |
| Plug-in Hybrid SE | Not available |
| Plug-in Hybrid Woodland | Standard |
| Plug-in Hybrid XSE | Standard |
| Plug-in Hybrid GR SPORT | Not available |
So if you're shopping and the phone key matters to you, keep in mind the LE, the SE and the Plug-in Hybrid GR SPORT don't have Digital Key. I go through what else each trim gets in my 2026 RAV4 trims guide.
What Digital Key is and how it works day to day
So Digital Key turns your phone, or your Apple Watch, into a key for your 2026 RAV4. The 2026 RAV4 manual says the phone key can lock and unlock the doors and start the car, the same as the key fob. And the phone key sits in your phone's wallet app, the same place you keep a credit card.
Now the phone talks to the RAV4 in two ways. Basically, ultra-wideband, or UWB, is a short-range radio in newer phones that lets the RAV4 tell exactly where the phone is. And NFC, or near field communication, is the tap-to-pay radio that only works when the phone touches the reader.
So this is how Toyota says you use Digital Key every day:
- To unlock, you walk up with the phone in your pocket or bag and put your hand inside the driver's door handle, just like with the key fob.
- To lock, you touch the front part of the driver's door handle.
- To start, you get in with the phone and start the RAV4 the way you normally would with the key fob.
- To lock or unlock from a distance, you open the Toyota key in your wallet app and tap Lock or Unlock.
- If your phone only has NFC, Toyota's support site says you can unlock and start by tapping the phone. The 2026 manual shows the tap spot for unlocking on the driver's door handle, and the reader for starting on the dash, below and to the left of the steering wheel.
And something to note is where the RAV4 can't find the phone well. The manual lists a metal or metal-plate phone case, the phone pressed against your body in a pocket, and the phone held too close to the window. Holding the phone near the ground or up high also gets in the way, and so does keeping it away from the center console when you start.
Toyota also warns not to leave the phone in the RAV4, since the phone works just like a key fob. And if the phone is lost or stolen, the manual says to contact your Toyota dealer right away.
What Digital Key costs after the 1-year trial
So Toyota says Digital Key "requires an active Remote Connect subscription." Basically, Remote Connect is the Toyota plan that lets the Toyota app lock, unlock and remote start your RAV4. Every 2026 RAV4 trim comes with a 1-year Remote Connect trial.
And something important to note is when the trial starts. Toyota says trials begin on the date you bought or leased the new RAV4. So the free year starts at the dealer, not on the day you set up the phone key.
After the free year, these are the plans on toyota.com's Connected Services page, checked October 15, 2026:
| Plan | Price | What it means for Digital Key |
|---|---|---|
| Remote Connect | $8 a month (checked Oct 15, 2026) | The plan Toyota says Digital Key needs. |
| Premium | $15 a month (checked Oct 15, 2026) | Toyota says Remote Connect is also included in Premium. |
Now you might have read that Remote Connect costs $15 a month. News stories from February to May 2026 said that, because back then Toyota's plans page didn't sell Remote Connect by itself. Back then, the cheapest plan with Remote Connect was the Premium plan, at $15 a month. But toyota.com now lists Remote Connect by itself for $8 a month (checked October 15, 2026).
So before you pay, I'd check the Shop screen in the Toyota app too, since on October 13, 2026 the app's Shop was still showing the older plans. I show how to find the Shop and see how much of your trial is left in my Toyota app guide. And if your real question is remote start from the key fob after the trial, I cover that in my key fob remote start guide.
What Toyota doesn't say about the phone key when the trial ends
So Toyota's pages only say that Digital Key needs an active Remote Connect trial or plan. Toyota's pages don't say what the phone key does the day the trial ends. Toyota doesn't say whether the phone key stops right away or keeps working for a while. And Toyota doesn't say whether the keys you shared stop too.
So I'd ask Toyota or your dealer before your trial ends, while there's still time to decide whether to pay for Remote Connect. Just ask what happens to the Digital Key on your phone, and on the phones you shared the key with, if you don't pay for Remote Connect.
But fortunately, the key fob doesn't need any plan at all. And the 2026 manual says the NFC key card "can be used even when the Digital Key cannot be used." I explain the key card further down.
Which phones and watches work with the 2026 RAV4's Digital Key
So Toyota says Digital Key works with an iPhone, an Apple Watch, or a compatible Google Pixel or Samsung phone. Basically, phones with ultra-wideband get the walk-up unlock. And phones with only NFC can tap to unlock and start, according to Toyota's support site.
| Wallet app | Phones that work | Watches |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Wallet | For walk-up unlock, Apple lists the iPhone 11 or newer. Apple's walk-up list leaves out every iPhone SE and the iPhone 16e. | Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. |
| Samsung Wallet | For walk-up unlock, Samsung lists the Galaxy S21+ and S21 Ultra through the S25 Ultra, S25 Edge and S25+, plus the Note20 Ultra. Samsung also lists the Z Fold2 through Z Fold7 and the Z TriFold. For tap-only, Samsung named the S20 series, S21, S21 FE, S22, S23, S23 FE, S24, S24 FE, S25, S25 FE and Note20. Samsung also named the Z Flip 5G, the Z Flip3 through Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE, the A36, the A56 and the XCover7 Pro. Samsung said in January 2026 that tap-only support for those phones would come later in 2026. | Samsung doesn't name a watch. |
| Google Wallet | Toyota says a "compatible" Google Pixel, but doesn't list which Pixel models. So check in Google Wallet when you add the key. | Toyota doesn't mention the Pixel Watch. |
And keep in mind that Apple has a longer car key list that starts at the iPhone XS and the Apple Watch Series 5. But Apple's list for walk-up unlock starts at the iPhone 11 and the Apple Watch Series 6. Toyota doesn't say whether an iPhone XS or a 2nd generation iPhone SE can tap to unlock the 2026 RAV4, so the iPhone 11 or newer is the safe pick.
Before you set up Digital Key
So Toyota lists a few things to have ready before you start.
- Make sure your 2026 RAV4 is a Digital Key trim. The Digital Key trims are in the table near the top of this guide.
- Add the RAV4 to the Toyota app and start Remote Connect. You can get the Toyota app on the App Store or Google Play for free. I walk through linking the car in my Toyota app guide.
- Turn the RAV4 on for about 5 minutes where you have cell signal. Toyota says waiting those 5 minutes gets the RAV4 ready for pairing after Remote Connect is turned on.
- Set up your wallet app and update your phone's software. That means Apple Wallet, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet.
- Turn on Bluetooth and make sure your phone has good cell signal.
- Bring the key fob into the RAV4. Toyota says "for the best results utilize the key fob during digital key setup," even if your RAV4 came with a key card.
- Find the email from Toyota whose subject starts with "Toyota Digital Key Registration." Toyota sends the email when you enroll in Remote Connect. The email has an 8-digit pairing code, which you need for the touchscreen method. And if the email isn't in your inbox, check your spam folder.
How to set up Digital Key in the Toyota app
So Toyota gives you three ways to set up Digital Key: the Toyota app, the registration email, or the RAV4's touchscreen. The Toyota app is the main way. And the Toyota app steps are the same for iPhone, Pixel and Samsung until you reach the wallet app.
- Sit in the RAV4 with your phone and the key fob, and turn the RAV4 on.
- Open the Toyota app and sign in.
- Tap Remote on the app's dashboard, scroll down, and tap Digital Key.
- Read the info screen and tap Connect. The Toyota app walks you through the next screens. Tap Next.
- The Toyota app asks you to check your phone has cell signal and Bluetooth on. Then tap Next.
- If you're using the key card instead of the key fob, the Toyota app asks you to put the card on the reader. The reader is on the dashboard, below and to the left of the steering wheel. If you're using the key fob, you skip this step.
- Make sure the RAV4 is on, then tap Open Wallet.
- Finish in your wallet app, using the steps for your phone below.
- When the Toyota app shows "A final tip," tap OK. Your Digital Key now shows in both the Toyota app and your wallet app.
Finishing on an iPhone
Tap Continue, and the key pairs with Apple Wallet. On the "Using Car Keys" screen, tap Continue. Then if you want the key on your Apple Watch too, tap Continue and follow the prompts, or tap Set up Later.
Finishing on a Google Pixel
In Google Wallet, tap Start pairing and keep the phone in the RAV4 until pairing finishes. When "Your car key is ready" shows, tap View in Wallet.
Finishing on a Samsung phone
In Samsung Wallet, tap Start and stay in the RAV4 while the key pairs. Then tap Done.
How to set up Digital Key from Toyota's email
- Sit in the RAV4 with your phone and the key fob, with the RAV4 on and Bluetooth on.
- Open Toyota's email whose subject starts with "Toyota Digital Key Registration."
- On an iPhone, tap "Click here for iOS pairing." Then tap Continue on the "Add Car Key to Wallet" screen. Tap Continue again on the "Using Car Keys" screen. For the Apple Watch, follow the prompts or tap Set up Later.
- On a Pixel or Samsung phone, tap the link in the email. Then follow the same wallet steps as above, Start pairing on a Pixel or Start on a Samsung. Stay in the RAV4 with the key fob until pairing finishes.
How to set up Digital Key from the RAV4's touchscreen
So the touchscreen method needs the 8-digit pairing code from Toyota's registration email. If you're new to the 2026 screen, my 2026 RAV4 touchscreen guide shows where Settings lives.
- Sit in the RAV4 with your phone and the key fob, with the RAV4 on. Have the 8-digit code ready.
- On the touchscreen, touch Settings, then Vehicle, then Doors, Locks, Keys.
- Touch Keys at the top, scroll past "Wireless Key Fob," and touch Set up Digital Key. Then touch Set Up.
- Hold your phone near the card reader on the dashboard, below and to the left of the steering wheel.
- On an iPhone, tap Continue with Pairing Code, then Continue. Enter the 8-digit "Toyota Pairing Code." Then hold the phone by the reader again while the key pairs.
- The RAV4's screen shows "Linking Digital Key." When the key is in Apple Wallet, tap Continue. Then set up the Apple Watch, or tap Set up Later. A message on the RAV4's screen tells you the setup is done.
And Pixel and Samsung phones follow the same touchscreen path, with their own wallet prompts at the end.
How to share your RAV4 Digital Key with family
So you can share your Digital Key with up to five other people, which makes six keys in total. And Toyota's support site says shared keys work on the other person's iPhone, Apple Watch, or compatible Google or Samsung phone. So an iPhone owner can share with a Samsung owner.
Now something important to note is that on the 2026 RAV4, you share the key from your wallet app, not from the Toyota app.
Sharing from an iPhone
- Open Wallet, tap the Toyota key, and tap Share.
- Pick the person and how to send the key.
- Set the access level under Privileges. You can also turn on an Activation Code.
- Tap Continue, then Send, and double-click the side button to confirm.
- Share or copy the activation code. Your iPhone tells you when the other person accepts.
Sharing from a Google Pixel
- Open Google Wallet, tap the Toyota key, and tap Share.
- Pick the person, name the key, and tap Next.
- On "Review settings before sharing your car key," turn on the activation code if you want one. Tap Change to set the access level. The default is "Full," which is the same as your own key.
- Copy the code, send the key, and then send the code.
- You can check whether the other person added the key under Manage shared key, where the shared key shows as Inactive Key or Active Key.
Sharing from a Samsung phone
- Open Samsung Wallet, tap Digital Keys, then the Toyota key, then Share.
- Tap Set options and share and enter the person's name.
- Turn on "Require first-time security code" if you want one.
- Pick the person, tap Send, and then share the security code.
How your family member adds the shared key
The person you shared with opens your message. On an iPhone, they tap Add to Apple Wallet. On a Pixel or Samsung phone, they tap the link. Then they enter the activation code if you set one, and finish in their wallet app.
And Apple suggests giving the activation code in person or by phone call, not in the same message as the key.
Keep in mind that Toyota's pages mention an access level, or "Privileges," for shared keys. But Toyota doesn't list what each access level allows on the 2026 RAV4. So for a teen driver, don't count on a speed limit or a valet mode from the access level.
How to stop sharing, turn off or delete Digital Key
Stop sharing with one person
- On an iPhone, open Wallet, tap the Toyota key, tap the People icon, pick the person, and tap Stop Sharing. You can stop sharing with everyone on that same screen.
- On a Pixel, open Manage shared key, tap the three dots by the person's name, then Delete Key, then Stop Sharing.
- On a Samsung phone, tap the Toyota key, tap the person's name, and tap Cancel key.
Turn Digital Key off or on at the RAV4
On the touchscreen, go to Settings, Vehicle, Doors, Locks, Keys, then Keys, and use the Enable Digital Keys switch. When you turn Digital Key off, the RAV4 tries to verify permissions. If the RAV4 can't, a pop-up asks you to touch Disable.
Delete every Digital Key
In the Toyota app, tap Remote, then Digital Key, scroll down, and tap Delete All Keys, then Delete. You can also delete your own key in your wallet app. On a Pixel, for example, you'd tap the key, then More, then Delete Key.
If your phone dies, has no signal, or goes missing
So the 2026 manual says the Digital Key can still be used "for a certain period of time" when your phone's battery needs charging. Toyota's 2026 RAV4 press release says the phone key uses NFC to keep working for a while even with no battery. So this is what each phone maker says about a dead battery:
- On an iPhone, Apple says power reserve works for up to five hours with some keys that have Express Mode turned on. But power reserve doesn't work if you shut the iPhone down yourself.
- On a Pixel or other Google Wallet phone, Google says you may still be able to unlock and start the car for a few hours. That's after the phone shuts off from low battery.
- On a Samsung phone, Samsung's press release doesn't mention a low-battery mode. But Toyota's support site says an iPhone, Google or Samsung phone can still run the Digital Key for a limited time after the battery runs out.
So with a dead phone, you'd tap the phone on the driver's door handle to unlock. Then you'd tap the phone on the reader below and to the left of the steering wheel, put your foot on the brake, and press start. And if that doesn't work, you'd use the NFC key card or the key fob's mechanical key. I explain the key fob's hidden mechanical key in my key fob battery guide.
Now if your phone has no signal, the phone key still works. Toyota says you get "unlimited operations even without an internet connection on your device." But setting up, sharing and deleting Digital Key do need your phone to reach Toyota's servers.
And if your phone is lost or stolen, the manual says to contact your Toyota dealer right away. Each phone maker also has its own way to shut the phone key off:
- On an iPhone, marking the iPhone as lost turns off the car key on that iPhone. But keys you shared with other people stay active.
- On a Samsung phone, you can lock or delete the key remotely through Samsung Find.
- On a Pixel, you can erase the phone or suspend the key through Google Find Hub.
The NFC key card, your backup key
So some 2026 RAV4s come with an NFC key card, which is a key the size of a credit card with no battery. The 2026 manual says the key card can lock, unlock and start the RAV4, and "can be used even when the Digital Key cannot be used."
- To unlock or lock, hold the key card on the driver's door handle.
- To start, put the RAV4 in Park, press the brake, hold the key card on the reader, and press the power button.
Now Toyota only says "some vehicles may come equipped with a key card," and doesn't list which trims. So look on the dashboard, below and to the left of the steering wheel, for the NFC symbol, which marks the reader. If your dash has the NFC symbol and you didn't get a key card, ask your dealer whether your RAV4 should have come with a key card.
And if you ever need a replacement key card or key fob, you can search Toyota Parts Online with your VIN, or ask your dealer's parts counter. I cover the key card and the key fob battery in my key fob battery guide.
Common Digital Key problems and fixes
So these are the snags Toyota's own manual and support pages point to, and the fix for each one.
- Your 2026 RAV4 is a trim without Digital Key. The Hybrid LE, Hybrid SE, Plug-in Hybrid SE and Plug-in Hybrid GR SPORT don't have Digital Key, so no setup will work on those trims.
- The Remote Connect trial ended. Toyota says Digital Key needs an active Remote Connect trial or plan, so check your trial in the Toyota app.
- Pairing won't start right after you turned on Remote Connect. Toyota says to leave the RAV4 on for about 5 minutes where you have cell signal first.
- You can't find the registration email. Check your spam folder, or use the Toyota app method, which doesn't need the 8-digit code.
- The door won't unlock when you walk up. Take the phone out of any metal case, and don't hold the phone too high, too low or against the glass.
- The RAV4 sat for 14 days or more. Hold your phone to the spot on the driver's door handle, then turn the RAV4 on.
- Setup fails with only the key card. Toyota says the key fob gives the best results during setup, so bring the key fob into the RAV4.
- The liftgate's walk-away lock doesn't work. The walk-away lock doesn't work with only the phone key, so carry the key fob if you use the walk-away lock.
And if the walk-up unlock feels too eager or too slow, your dealer can change a few Digital Key settings. The manual lists the Digital Key power saving mode, how long you touch the door handle sensor, and the radio range used to find the phone. The dealer can also change the inside and outside detection areas.
Two Digital Keys that get mixed up
So Toyota has two different Digital Keys, and the two are easy to mix up. The 2026 RAV4 uses the newer one that lives in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet.
The older Digital Key runs over Bluetooth inside the Toyota app. Toyota has said the 2026 Camry, Grand Highlander, Prius, Tacoma, Crown and Crown Signia still use the older Toyota app version. And the older version shares with up to seven people, while the 2026 RAV4 shares with five. So if a guide or video tells you to share the key from the Toyota app, it's describing the older version.
And the other mix-up is about phones. Toyota's October 2025 press release for the 2026 RAV4 said Digital Key needs a phone with ultra-wideband. But Toyota's newer support pages say phones with only NFC can still tap to unlock and start. So an ultra-wideband phone gives you the walk-up unlock, and an NFC-only phone can still tap.
Videos of the 2026 RAV4's key card and phone key
Steven Welch shows how the 2026 RAV4's NFC key card works, from unlocking the door to starting the RAV4.
- The key card's sleeve: He shows the key card coming in an RFID-blocking sleeve.
- Unlocking with the key card: He holds the key card on the front of the driver's door handle, and says you have to hit the exact spot.
- Starting with the key card: The screen tells him to touch the NFC symbol, so he taps the key card on the reader. Then he presses the brake and the power button. He has to tap the key card again for each restart.
- His verdict: He calls the key card very reliable, and says he's still a little leery about the phone key. He also says that if your dash has the NFC symbol, your RAV4 should have come with a key card, so ask the dealer.
A 2026 RAV4 Woodland owner uses the Apple Wallet buttons to lock and unlock from a distance.
- Unlocking from Apple Wallet: The owner opens Apple Wallet, taps Unlock, and the RAV4 unlocks. Another tap locks the RAV4 again.
- The alarm button: The owner shows that the Wallet key also has an alarm button.
- A name mix-up: The owner calls the phone key the "digital key card," but what the video shows is the phone key in Apple Wallet.
A Canadian Toyota dealer shows the whole key card routine in under a minute.
- Getting in: The dealer walks up and holds the key card on the driver's door handle to unlock.
- Starting: Inside, the dealer puts the key card on the reader, presses the brake, and starts the RAV4.
- Keep in mind: Canadian RAV4 trims are different from US trims, so the trim names in this video may not match yours.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, if you have a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium, Woodland, XSE or Limited, or a Plug-in Hybrid Woodland or XSE, the phone key is worth setting up. I'd use the Toyota app method with the key fob in the car, and share the key from your wallet app.
But keep in mind that Digital Key needs Remote Connect, which is $8 a month after the free year (checked October 15, 2026). So before your trial ends, I'd ask Toyota or your dealer what the phone key does without the plan. And I'd always keep the key fob or the key card handy.
So hopefully this helps you get your phone key working.
