Quick picks
The three best replacement tires for a RAV4, side by side
So here are the picks next to each other in the three 2019 to 2025 RAV4 sizes. The prices are per tire, before installation, from five online tire stores: Tire Rack, Discount Tire, Priority Tire, SimpleTire and TireAgent. The prices were checked October 1 to 3, 2026, and tire prices change often.
| Tire | Best for | Tread warranty | 225/65R17 | 225/60R18 | 235/55R19 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Michelin CrossClimate2 | Snow and ice | 60,000 miles | $224.99 to $235.24 | $236.99 to $237.99 | $289.99 to $295.99 |
| Michelin Defender2 | Lowest cost per mile | 80,000 miles | $204.99 to $224.03 | $219.99 to $271.71 | $259.99 to $273.46 |
| Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 | Quiet ride and mpg | 70,000 miles | $189.73 to $195.00 | $199.82 to $202.00 | $244.35 to $251.00 |
| Continental CrossContact LX25 | Quiet ride and mpg | 70,000 miles | $173.99 to $188.00 | $185.99 to $192.00 | $229.99 to $238.00 |
And something to note is that Continental's own page for the CrossContact LX25 is gone. But the five stores above still sold the CrossContact LX25 in all three 2019 to 2025 RAV4 sizes as of October 2026. A few listings also had rebates, like $80 off a set of four Michelins, and those rebates come and go.
Now for the 2026 RAV4 sizes, the 2026 price table is in the 2026 sizes section below.
What size tires does a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 take?
So the tire size on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 depends on the trim and on whether the RAV4 is gas or Hybrid. And the easiest way to be sure is to read your own tires. Your tire size is printed on the side of each tire and on the tire sticker on the driver's door jamb.
Basically, a size like 225/65R17 means the tire is 225 millimeters wide, the sidewall height is 65 percent of that width, and the tire fits a 17-inch wheel.
| Trim and years | Gas or Hybrid | Wheel | Factory tire size |
|---|---|---|---|
| LE, 2019 to 2025 | Gas | 17-inch steel with covers | 225/65R17 |
| LE, 2019 to 2025 | Hybrid | 17-inch alloy | 225/65R17 |
| XLE, 2019 to 2025 | Gas and Hybrid | 17-inch alloy | 225/65R17 |
| XLE Premium, 2019 to 2025 | Gas | 19-inch alloy | 235/55R19 |
| XLE Premium, 2021 to 2025 | Hybrid | 18-inch alloy | 225/60R18 |
| Adventure, 2019 to 2024 | Gas | 19-inch | 235/55R19 |
| TRD Off-Road, 2020 to 2024 | Gas | 18-inch matte black TRD | 225/60R18, on Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail all-terrain tires |
| SE, 2021 to 2025 | Hybrid | 18-inch | 225/60R18 |
| XSE, 2019 to 2025 | Hybrid | 18-inch gloss black | 225/60R18 |
| Woodland Edition, 2023 to 2025 | Hybrid | 18-inch bronze TRD | 225/60R18, on Falken all-terrain tires |
| Limited, 2019 to 2025 | Gas | 19-inch | 235/55R19 |
| Limited, 2019 to 2025 | Hybrid | 18-inch | 225/60R18 |
| Prime SE, called the Plug-in Hybrid SE for 2025, 2021 to 2025 | Plug-in Hybrid | 18-inch | 225/60R18 |
| Prime XSE, called the Plug-in Hybrid XSE for 2025, 2021 to 2025 | Plug-in Hybrid | 19-inch | 235/55R19 |
So the gas XLE Premium, the gas Adventure, the gas Limited and the Prime XSE are the ones on 19-inch wheels. The Hybrid XLE Premium and the Hybrid Limited are on 18-inch wheels instead. My 2025 RAV4 Hybrid XSE, for example, came on 225/60R18 tires. And my wheels and tires page covers swapping wheels and fitting bigger tires.
What size tires does a 2026 RAV4 take?
So the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid use four new sizes, and all four are 235 millimeters wide. Toyota's manual says to use only the sizes Toyota recommends. So a 2026 owner should shop by the 2026 sizes, not the 2019 to 2025 sizes above. And Toyota's 2026 owner's manual lists 38 psi front and rear on every factory size.
| 2026 trim | Wheel | Factory tire size |
|---|---|---|
| LE | 17-inch | 235/65R17 104H |
| XLE Premium, SE and Limited | 18-inch | 235/60R18 103V or 103H |
| Woodland | 18-inch matte gray | 235/65R18 106V, on Dunlop GrandTrek all-terrain tires |
| XSE, GR SPORT, and the Limited with the $1,240 20-In. Wheel Package | 20-inch | 235/50R20 100V or 104V |
So the 2026 Woodland comes on Dunlop GrandTrek all-terrain tires, in Toyota's words. Toyota doesn't name the exact GrandTrek model, so the link here goes to Dunlop's US tire list.
And the 2026 GR SPORT comes on Dunlop Sportmaxx summer tires. The link here is an Amazon search for Dunlop Sportmaxx in 235/50R20. Toyota offers all-season 235/50R20 tires on the GR SPORT as a no-cost swap.
Here are the picks in the 2026 sizes, per tire, checked October 1 to 3, 2026:
| Tire | 235/65R17 (LE) | 235/60R18 (XLE Premium, SE, Limited) | 235/65R18 (Woodland) | 235/50R20 (XSE, GR SPORT, Limited 20-inch) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Michelin CrossClimate2 | $257.99 to $281.04 | $264.99 to $283.74 | $249.99 to $274.85 | $329.99 to $336.73 |
| Michelin Defender2 | $221.99 to $245.65 | $229.99 to $249.91 | $224.99 to $228.99 | Not listed in this size |
| Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 | $206.46 to $215.00 | $219.04 to $239.00 | $206.79 to $220.00 | Not listed in this size |
| Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 | $246.00 to $250.99 | $240.00 to $249.99 | $234.99 to $236.99 | $310.00 to $314.99 |
So on the 20-inch 2026 RAV4s, the CrossClimate2 and the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 are the only tires in this table sold in 235/50R20. And keep in mind the 2026 Woodland's factory tire is rated 106V. The Defender2 and the Scorpion AS Plus 3 come in 235/65R18 at 106H, which is a lower speed rating, so check with the shop first.
Which factory tire is on your RAV4, and why owners replace it early
So Toyota doesn't publish which tire brand went on which 2019 to 2025 trim, and the brand varies from one RAV4 to the next. Common factory tires include these:
- Michelin Primacy All Season, which Michelin lists as the factory tire on the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid XLE and the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid XSE.
- Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus, often on the 17-inch trims.
- Dunlop Grandtrek PT20, reported by owners of gas and Hybrid RAV4s from 2019 to 2025.
- Yokohama Avid GT, on the 2021 RAV4 Prime XSE. The link is TireSize.com's store price comparison for the 235/55R19 size.
- Falken Wildpeak A/T Trail, on the TRD Off-Road and the 2023 to 2025 Woodland Edition.
So the easiest way to know which tire you have is to read the side of your tire, where the brand and model are printed next to the size.
Now Tire Rack, a big online tire store, runs a survey where owners score their tires out of 10. The factory version of the Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus and the Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 both score near the bottom of the crossover touring tire survey.
| Factory tire | Treadwear | Wet grip | Snow | Noise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus, factory version | 5.6 | 6.6 | 4.4 | 6.7 |
| Dunlop Grandtrek PT20 | 4.4 | 5.6 | 4.1 | 5.2 |
| For comparison: Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 | 8.9 | 9.1 | 8.2 | 9.1 |
So that's why so many owners replace the factory tires early. Several owners say their factory tires were done at about 30,000 miles. But one 2022 RAV4 Hybrid SE owner still had tread on their factory Primacy All Season tires at about 61,000 miles. Those are single owner reports, so your mileage will depend on your tires and how you drive.
When to replace your RAV4's tires, and how to check the tread
So tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. A new tire usually starts at 10/32 to 12/32 of an inch. Here's when each source says the tread is done:
- Consumer Reports says start shopping at 4/32 of an inch. Consumer Reports' tests show wet and snow grip fall off well before the tread is fully worn. In a 2022 Consumer Reports test, half-worn tires had about 14 percent less snow grip.
- Toyota's manual says replace a tire once its treadwear indicators show. The treadwear indicators are small raised bars in the bottom of the grooves, and they sit level with the tread at 2/32 of an inch, which Consumer Reports calls fully worn. A "TWI" mark on the side of the tire shows where those bars are.
- Toyota's manual says any tire over 6 years old must be checked by a technician, even if the tire looks fine or has barely been used.
- Toyota's manual says replace a tire with cuts, cracks deep enough to show the fabric inside, or bulges, or a tire that keeps going flat or can't be repaired.
And here's the quick way to check with a quarter:
- Hold a quarter with George Washington's head pointing down.
- Push the quarter into the deepest groove near the middle of the tire.
- If the tread is level with the top of Washington's head, you have about 4/32 of an inch left. So that's the time to start shopping.
- Check a few spots on each of the four tires, because tires can wear unevenly.
And something worth noting is the signs owners notice before the wear bars show. Owners hear a louder hum, slip on wet or icy hills, or feel uneven wear called cupping. My RAV4 road noise guide explains cupping and how to tell tire noise from a wheel bearing.
Best RAV4 replacement tire for snow: Michelin CrossClimate2
So the Michelin CrossClimate2 is the one I'd pick if you drive in snow and want one set of tires all year. The CrossClimate2 is an all-weather tire. Basically, an all-weather tire carries the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, which means the tire passed a standard snow traction test.
And the test results back the CrossClimate2 up. Tire Rack's 2024 crossover test used 235/55R19, the RAV4's 19-inch size. Of the eight tires, the CrossClimate2 had the shortest stops in snow, on ice and on dry pavement. In Tire Rack's 2024 touring test in a car size, the CrossClimate2 again had the shortest snow stop, 5 feet shorter than the next tire. And Consumer Reports, which buys its own tires and takes no money from tire makers, names the CrossClimate2 its top all-season tire for midsize SUVs.
Now the CrossClimate2 does give up a little. Tire Rack's testers found the CrossClimate2 firmer and less refined on the road, so the CrossClimate2 placed sixth of eight overall in the crossover test. But no tire in either Tire Rack test stopped shorter in the snow than the CrossClimate2.
The CrossClimate2 has a 60,000-mile tread warranty, and costs $224.99 to $235.24 a tire in 225/65R17, checked October 1 to 3, 2026.
And if you'd like another all-weather tire with the snowflake symbol, here are three more:
- Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 scored best overall in two Tire Rack touring tests in a car size, from November 2024 and November 2025, and was strong in snow. It has a 60,000-mile warranty and costs $219.99 to $220.00 a tire in 225/65R17.
- Pirelli Scorpion WeatherActive placed third of eight in Tire Rack's crossover test, with a quieter ride than the CrossClimate2. It has a 60,000-mile warranty and costs $217.85 a tire in 225/65R17.
- Bridgestone WeatherPeak was among the best in snow in Tire Rack's touring test. But the WeatherPeak took the longest of 11 tires to stop in the wet, 174 feet from 60 mph. It has a 70,000-mile warranty and costs $206.00 to $218.96 a tire in 225/65R17.
So the prices above were checked October 1 to 3, 2026. And keep in mind a real winter tire still grips better on ice than any all-weather tire. If your winters bring a lot of ice, my RAV4 snow tires guide covers a second set of winter tires. And my RAV4 in snow guide explains how the RAV4's AWD systems handle snow and ice.
Best RAV4 replacement tire for cost per mile: Michelin Defender2
So the Michelin Defender2 is the one I'd pick if you put on a lot of miles. Michelin backs the Defender2 with an 80,000-mile tread warranty. And Consumer Reports projects the Defender2's tread will last 100,000 miles, the longest Consumer Reports has measured.
Basically, cost per mile is what you pay for the tires divided by how many miles they last. The table below works it out for a set of four in 225/65R17, at the lowest price listed, with each tire lasting its warranty mileage. It's the tire price only, before installation.
| Tire | Set of four | Tread warranty | Cost per 10,000 miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continental CrossContact LX25 | $695.96 | 70,000 miles | About $99 |
| Michelin Defender2 | $819.96 | 80,000 miles | About $102, or about $82 if the tread lasts Consumer Reports' projected 100,000 miles |
| Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 | $758.92 | 70,000 miles | About $108 |
| Michelin CrossClimate2 | $899.96 | 60,000 miles | About $150 |
So on warranty miles alone, the CrossContact LX25 and the Defender2 come out about even. But the Defender2 has the longer warranty and Consumer Reports' longest projected tread life, so the Defender2 is the safer bet for the most miles out of one set.
Now the Defender2's weak spot is snow. In Tire Rack's touring test, the Defender2 took the longest of 11 tires to stop in snow, 84.5 feet from 25 mph. And Tire Rack rated the Defender2 a step down on comfort and on wet and dry grip. So the Defender2 is a great tire for mild winters and long commutes. But if you drive in snow, I'd go with the CrossClimate2 instead.
Best RAV4 replacement tire for a quiet ride and mpg: Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 or Continental CrossContact LX25
So the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 and the Continental CrossContact LX25 are the two I'd pick for a quiet ride. And for a RAV4 Hybrid owner who watches mpg, the Scorpion AS Plus 3 has Consumer Reports' top score for rolling resistance. Basically, rolling resistance is how much energy a tire wastes as it rolls, so lower rolling resistance means better mpg.
In Tire Rack's 2024 crossover test, the Scorpion AS Plus 3 scored best overall. The Scorpion AS Plus 3 also had the best noise and road comfort ratings of all eight tires. And the CrossContact LX25 had the shortest wet stop of the eight. Here's how the quiet tires score for noise in Tire Rack's owner survey, out of 10:
| Tire | Owner noise score | Owner miles behind the score | 225/65R17 price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 | 9.1 | 24 million | $189.73 to $195.00 |
| Continental CrossContact LX25 | 8.9 | 22 million | $173.99 to $188.00 |
| Yokohama Geolandar CV G058 | 8.7 | 2.8 million | $180.99 to $190.00 |
| Bridgestone Ecopia H/L 422 Plus, factory version | 6.7 | 6.7 million | $182.96 to $248.16 |
| Dunlop Grandtrek PT20, factory tire | 5.2 | 1.6 million | $217 to $265 across all sizes at Discount Tire, checked October 15, 2026 |
So the prices were checked October 1 to 3, 2026. And Pirelli's warranty document lists a 70,000-mile tread warranty for the Scorpion All Season Plus 3. The CrossContact LX25 has a 70,000-mile tread warranty too.
Now the catch with both tires is snow. Tire Rack found the CrossContact LX25 weak in snow, and the Scorpion AS Plus 3 trailed a little in the wet and snow. So I'd pick one of these two for a RAV4 that sees mild winters. And the Yokohama Geolandar CV G058 is a good third option that Tire Rack ranked second overall in the crossover test, but it's weak in snow too.
And if you'd rather put the factory tire back on, the Michelin Primacy All Season costs $211.86 to $244.81 a tire in 225/65R17, checked October 1 to 3, 2026. The retail Primacy All Season starts with 8.5/32 of an inch of tread and has a 55,000-mile warranty. So the Primacy All Season costs about the same as the picks above. But the picks above start with more tread and carry longer warranties.
What new tires do to a RAV4 Hybrid's mpg
So any new tire can change your RAV4's mpg. Here's what's known about which tires cost the least mpg:
- Low rolling resistance tires cost the least mpg. Consumer Reports gives the Scorpion AS Plus 3 its top rolling resistance score, and rates the Defender2 above average.
- Owners on RAV4 forums report the Scorpion AS Plus 3 and the CrossContact LX25 kept their mpg about the same as the factory tires. Those are owner reports, and there's no count of how many owners.
- Owner reports on the CrossClimate2 range from no change to about 10 to 15 percent lower mpg. Again, those are owner reports with no count.
- All-terrain tires cost the most mpg. My all-terrain tire guide has the numbers on those.
- Tire pressure matters as much as the tire. Toyota's manual says the wrong tire pressure causes poor fuel economy, so set the pressure on the door sticker after the new tires go on.
And my RAV4 Hybrid mpg guide covers tire pressure, cold weather and the other reasons a RAV4 Hybrid's mpg drops.
What to do when you buy new tires for a RAV4
- Replace all four tires together. Toyota's manual says not to mix tires of different makes, models or tread patterns, or tires with very different wear. And on an AWD RAV4, matching all four tires matters even more, so I'd always buy a set of four.
- Match the size, load index and speed rating. Toyota's manual says to use only the sizes Toyota recommends. The load index and speed rating should match your factory tire or be higher.
- Get an alignment with the new set. A bad alignment wears new tires unevenly, and that uneven wear is a common cause of noise.
- Reset the tire pressure warning system. Toyota's manual says the tire pressure warning system has to be reset after a tire rotation, so ask the shop to reset the system when the new tires go on. My RAV4 TPMS reset guide walks through the steps.
- Rotate the tires every 5,000 miles. Toyota's maintenance schedule lists a tire rotation at every 5,000-mile service. My RAV4 maintenance schedule has the full list.
- Know who covers the tires. Toyota's new car warranty doesn't cover tires. The tire maker's own warranty does, so a tread warranty claim goes through the tire maker.
Videos worth watching on RAV4 replacement tires
So these three videos show the tires above being tested, picked and fitted to a RAV4.
Tire Rack's testers drive eight crossover tires in 235/55R19, the RAV4's 19-inch size, then add snow and ice testing.
- The Scorpion AS Plus 3 on the road: The Scorpion AS Plus 3 was the testers' favorite on the road, quiet and soaking up bumps.
- The CrossClimate2 on the road: The CrossClimate2 felt composed but on the firm side, with some tire noise.
- All-season versus all-weather: The all-season tires were a bit quieter and more comfortable, but the all-weather tires were close.
- Snow and ice: The CrossClimate2 stopped shortest on ice from 12 mph, and stood out for turning grip in snow.
- What to keep in mind: The test car is an Alfa Romeo Stelvio, not a RAV4. But the tires are the RAV4's 19-inch size.
Consumer Reports names its top tire in each group, in under two minutes.
- The CrossClimate2: The CrossClimate2 is Consumer Reports' pick for midsize SUVs, above average in every all-season test, with cold weather grip close to a snow tire.
- The Defender2: The Defender2 is Consumer Reports' pick for cars and small SUVs, with the longest projected tread life Consumer Reports has measured, 100,000 miles.
A 2019 RAV4 owner puts Defender2 tires in 225/65R17 on their RAV4 at Discount Tire.
- Why the owner switched: The owner's old Kumho tires started humming after about 30,000 miles and showed small cracks at about 40,000 miles.
- The owner's first impressions: After the new tires and an alignment, the owner calls the Defender2 very smooth and quiet, softer over bumps, and tracking straight.
- The owner's snow warning: The owner points out the Defender2 doesn't have the snowflake symbol, so the owner doesn't expect the Defender2 to be great in slush.
- One correction: The owner says the Defender2 warranty is up to 85,000 miles. Michelin's Defender2 warranty is 80,000 miles.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, if you drive in snow, I'd put the Michelin CrossClimate2 on your RAV4. If you put on a lot of miles in a mild climate, I'd go with the Michelin Defender2. And if you want a quiet ride that's easy on mpg, I'd pick the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 or the Continental CrossContact LX25.
And whichever tire you pick, check your size and speed rating on the door sticker first, buy all four together, and get an alignment. So hopefully this helps you pick the right set when your factory tires wear out.
