Three car seats in a RAV4: the answer for each year
So the RAV4's back seat fits two car seats well, but not three. The table below shows the answer for each year, for the gas, Hybrid and plug-in hybrid RAV4, and which narrow car seats it takes to fit three.
| RAV4 years and model | Three ordinary car seats? | Three narrow car seats? |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2021 gas, Hybrid and Prime | No, per Cars.com's check of a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid | Yes with three Graco SlimFit3 LX seats, confirmed by Graco |
| 2022 to 2025 gas, Hybrid and Prime (the Prime was renamed the Plug-in Hybrid for 2025) | No, per Cars.com and a certified car seat technician | Likely with three Graco SlimFit3 LX seats, since the 2022 to 2025 back seat measures the same as the 2019 to 2021, but Graco hasn't confirmed it. One owner fit two Diono Radian 3R seats plus a Chicco seat in a 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. |
| 2026 Hybrid | No, per two Cars.com checks and a certified car seat technician | Nobody has shown it with US car seats yet |
| 2026 Plug-in Hybrid | No US check found | Nobody has shown it with US car seats yet |
Why three car seats are so tight in a RAV4
So the main reason is width. Toyota lists two width numbers for the back seat. Hip room is measured at the seat cushion. And shoulder room is measured higher up, about where the top of a car seat sits.
| RAV4 years | Back seat hip room | Back seat shoulder room | Back seat legroom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2025 gas, Hybrid and Prime | 47.7 in | 56.4 in | 37.8 in |
| 2026 Hybrid | 49.6 in | 56.4 in | 37.8 in |
Now most narrow car seats are about 16.7 to 17 inches wide at their widest point. So three narrow car seats side by side need about 50 to 51 inches. That's more than the 47.7 inches of hip room in a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. Basically, car seats are widest up high, and the back seat is wider up there too, at 56.4 inches of shoulder room. So three narrow car seats only fit when they can touch each other above the cushion. And where the three buckles sit matters just as much as the width.
The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid's hip room number is 1.9 inches bigger on paper. But the shoulder room didn't change, and a European spec site lists the 2026 at about the same hip room as the 2019 to 2025 RAV4. Toyota doesn't say whether it measured differently. So keep in mind that the extra width in a 2026 isn't confirmed in real life yet.
How the RAV4's car seat anchors and middle back seat work
So a car seat attaches to the car in one of two ways. It's held either by the car's seat belt or by LATCH, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. Basically, LATCH anchors are small metal bars hidden in the gap between the seat cushion and the seatback. The car seat clips onto those bars with connectors. Some car seats use straps with hooks on the end, and some use stiff metal arms called rigid connectors.
And a top tether is a strap on the top of a forward-facing car seat. The top tether hooks to a separate anchor behind the back seat, so the car seat doesn't pitch forward in a crash. Every 2019 to 2025 RAV4 owner's manual and the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid owner's manual describe the same layout:
- Lower anchors are only in the two outer back seats. The manual says there are no LATCH anchors behind the rear center seat.
- The middle seat can borrow the inner anchors from the two outer seats, which are 17.3 inches (440 mm) apart. But that's only allowed if your car seat's maker says that spacing is OK.
- If the outer seats are already using their anchors, the middle car seat goes in with the seat belt. And you never put two connectors on one anchor. So with three car seats across, the middle car seat almost always has to be a seat belt install.
- Car seats with rigid connectors can't go in the middle seat.
- When you install a car seat in the middle, set both back seatbacks to the same angle. The RAV4's back seat splits 60/40, so the two sides recline separately.
- All three back seats have their own top tether anchor on the back of the seatback. For the two outer seats, you take the headrest off to run the tether strap.
- The manual says not to use a seat belt extender with a car seat. A seat belt extender is the add-on strap that makes a seat belt longer.
Now on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the top tether anchors sit in the carpet on the back of the seatback, and Cars.com found one buried in that carpet. On the 2026, the tether anchors sit behind slits in the seat fabric. J.Mak, a certified car seat technician, says to make sure the hook grabs the metal anchor and not the fabric around it.
The IIHS, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, rates how easy the anchors are to use. The 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the 2021 to 2024 RAV4 Prime and the 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid all got Good+. The plus means there's an extra LATCH spot, which here is the middle seat borrowing anchors. The IIHS hasn't published a rating for the 2026 RAV4 yet. And keep in mind the IIHS rating is about how easy the anchors are to use, not whether three car seats fit.
So something else worth knowing is how the middle seat belt sits. In a 2023 RAV4, The Car Mom found the middle seat belt crossed a little into the passenger-side seat's space. J.Mak says the 2026's middle buckle is attached on the passenger side, and they didn't see a real overlap. So the 2026 RAV4 may have fixed the middle seat belt overlap, but nobody has confirmed it.
And for the step by step install, the owner's manual is the one to follow. The car seat pages start on page 62 of the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid owner's manual.
What car seat technicians found in each RAV4
So the most useful tests come from Cars.com, whose editors are certified car seat technicians. In each check, Cars.com sets the front seats for a 6-foot driver and a shorter passenger. Then Cars.com gives each kind of car seat a letter grade, where A is the best. And for three across, Cars.com tries an infant seat, a convertible seat and a booster side by side.
Basically, an infant seat is the carrier with a handle that clicks into a base, and the baby faces the back of the car. A convertible seat faces the back for babies and turns around to face forward for toddlers. And a booster is the seat an older kid sits on so the car's own seat belt fits them.
| RAV4 tested | Anchors (LATCH) | Infant seat | Rear-facing convertible | Forward-facing convertible | Booster | Three across? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | A | A | A | A | A | Result not found |
| 2021 RAV4 Hybrid Limited | A | A | B, the front passenger had to move forward | B, the top tether anchor is buried in carpet | A | No |
| 2022 RAV4 Prime | A | A | B | B | A | No |
| 2023 RAV4 Prime | A | A | B | B | A | No |
| 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | A | A | A | B | C, the raised edge of the seat cushion pushed the booster onto the buckle | No |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited (Dec 2025) | B, anchors partly hidden and tight against the cushions | A | B, hook connectors needed force | C, anchors need force and the tether anchor is easy to miss | B, short buckles and a floppy middle buckle | No |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD (Apr 2026) | A | B, a 5'8" passenger needed more legroom | B | B, tether anchors sit in slits in the seat fabric | B | No |
The 2019 grades come from Cars.com's 2019 list of straight-A vehicles, and there's no three-across result for the 2019.
So the 2026 RAV4 actually scored worse than the 2025 in the first Cars.com check, which Cars.com wrote up in its own 2026 vs 2025 comparison. Now the 2026's anchor grade went from a B in December 2025 to an A in April 2026. But that's because Cars.com switched to newer test seats. Basically, the 2026's anchors sit tighter against the cushion than the 2025's. So car seats with rigid or wide connectors go on easily, and car seats with skinny hook connectors take some force. I compare the two years in more detail in my 2026 vs 2025 RAV4 guide.
Something to note is that Cars.com tested with common car seats of ordinary width. The infant seat was the Chicco KeyFit 30, $229.99 at Chicco (checked Oct 15, 2026). The convertible was the Graco Contender 65, which Graco no longer lists. The closest Graco seat is the Graco Contender Slim, $189.99 at Graco (checked Oct 15, 2026). The April 2026 test switched to the Graco Extend2Fit convertible, $239.99 at Graco (checked Oct 15, 2026). And the booster was the Graco TurboBooster, now sold as the Graco TurboBooster 2.0 Highback, $69.99 at Graco (checked Oct 15, 2026). So if you already own seats like these, the Cars.com results are a good guide to what you'd see.
The two car seat technicians who tried three car seats in a RAV4
- 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid, The Car Mom: Kelly, a certified car seat technician, tried about four combinations of slim car seats and couldn't fit three across. A Clek Foonf behind the passenger and a Clek Fllo in the middle went in fine. The third seat was an UPPAbaby Mesa infant carrier. The Mesa carrier is wider than its base, and in the space left, the carrier wouldn't click into its base.
- 2026 RAV4, J.Mak: They're a certified car seat technician in Canada, and they installed a Clek Liing infant seat (from $599.99 at Clek, checked Oct 15, 2026) and a Clek Foonf. They say you're not likely to fit three child seats across. Even an adult their size, 5'11" and 180 pounds, couldn't sit between the two car seats.
So both technicians found three car seats don't fit. But both also found two car seats fit well, and The Car Mom got two narrow Clek seats in with no trouble. So the narrow car seats further down are how some families get to three.
Families who fit three car seats across a RAV4
- 2022 RAV4 XLE Hybrid: One owner on YouTube fit three car seats for kids aged 1, 4 and 6. Two Diono Radian 3R seats face forward, one of them in the middle, and a Chicco seat faces the back. The video doesn't say which Chicco seat it is, and the owner isn't a technician. But the video shows three across can work with the right narrow car seats.
- 2019 RAV4 Hybrid and 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, in Australia: BabyDrive, an Australian car seat site, fit three child seats in both. But keep in mind that Australian car seats are built to a different standard and are different models from US car seats. BabyDrive also doesn't name the seats. So the Australian results only show three across is possible with the right seats, not that your US car seats will fit.
The narrow car seats that can work in a RAV4
So if you want to keep the RAV4, the realistic way to fit three is three narrow car seats picked for your kids' ages. And before you buy all three, I'd book a free check with a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. Basically, a Child Passenger Safety Technician is someone trained and certified to install and check car seats. Clek's three-across page links to the national directory of certified technicians, so you can find one near you.
Graco SlimFit3 LX: the only three-across setup a maker has confirmed
So Graco told CarseatBlog that three Graco SlimFit3 LX seats fit in a 2019, 2020 and 2021 RAV4. The SlimFit3 LX is $299.99 at Graco, but it was out of stock at Graco in the Kunningham color (checked Oct 15, 2026). Walmart has the same Graco SlimFit3 LX for $299.99, with other colors from $229.99 (checked Oct 15, 2026). And Walmart also sells a 2-pack of the Graco True3Fit LX, which CarseatBlog says is the same seat, for $584.98 (checked Oct 15, 2026).
The SlimFit3 LX is about 16.7 inches wide. And Graco tested these six combinations in a 2019 RAV4, listed from the passenger side, to the middle, to the driver side:
- All three SlimFit3 LX seats face forward.
- One SlimFit3 LX faces the back, then two SlimFit3 LX seats face forward.
- One SlimFit3 LX faces the back, one SlimFit3 LX faces forward, and then an infant seat goes behind the driver.
- One SlimFit3 LX faces the back, one SlimFit3 LX faces forward, and then a high-back booster goes behind the driver.
- Two SlimFit3 LX seats face forward, and then a high-back booster goes behind the driver.
- All three SlimFit3 LX seats face the back.
The infant seat Graco used was the Graco SnugRide SnugLock 35, which Graco no longer lists. The closest Graco infant seat now is the Graco SnugRide SnugLock LX, $279.99 at Graco (checked Oct 15, 2026). And the booster was the Graco TurboBooster Highback, which is now the TurboBooster 2.0 Highback I linked above.
Now Graco gave a few rules for making three SlimFit3 LX seats work:
- The car seats can touch, but they can't overlap.
- Each car seat must move less than 1 inch when you pull on it at the belt path. The belt path is the spot where the seat belt or LATCH strap runs through the car seat.
- Install the middle car seat first.
- Remove a cup holder if one gets in the way of a car seat.
CarseatBlog adds that you may need to fold down the bigger, driver-side part of the 60/40 back seat while you install the middle car seat. And with most boosters, the passenger-side buckle can be hard for a kid to reach.
Diono Radian 3R: worked for one family in a 2022 RAV4
The owner of the 2022 RAV4 Hybrid on YouTube used two Diono Radian 3R seats. The Diono Radian 3R is about 17 inches wide, and it's $184.74 on Diono's own Amazon store (checked Oct 15, 2026). Diono also sells the Diono Radian 3R Max, which comes with an add-on piece for crashes from the side, for $239.99 (checked Oct 15, 2026). And the older Diono Radian 3RXT Safe+ is listed as discontinued at Strolleria, at $239.99 on sale (checked Oct 15, 2026).
Clek Foonf and Clek Fllo: two of the three spots in a 2023 RAV4
The Clek Foonf is from $649.99 and the Clek Fllo is from $499.99 at Clek (checked Oct 15, 2026). The Mammoth fabric costs $50 more on each. Clek says both seats are under 17 inches wide. And Clek says the Fllo suits seat belt installs, which is what the middle seat needs. The Car Mom got both Clek seats into a 2023 RAV4 with no trouble. So the Foonf and the Fllo are a fair bet for two of the three spots, and the third seat is the one to plan carefully.
Why the infant carrier usually blocks three across
So the seat that most often breaks a three-across plan is the infant carrier, because the carrier is wider than its base. That's what stopped The Car Mom with the UPPAbaby Mesa carrier in a 2023 RAV4. The current model is the UPPAbaby Mesa V3, and UPPAbaby's page doesn't show its price (checked Oct 15, 2026). Basically, if your third child is a newborn, a rear-facing convertible seat from birth, like the Graco SlimFit3 LX, skips the wide carrier altogether.
Narrow boosters for an older kid
And if one of your kids is booster age, a narrow booster can go in the tightest spot. CarseatBlog suggests the BubbleBum inflatable booster for that spot. The BubbleBum is $60.95 in black at BubbleBum (checked Oct 15, 2026). The Clek Olli backless booster is $149.99 at Clek (checked Oct 15, 2026). And the Diono Connect3 RXT high-back booster is sold as a slim fit for three across, at $149.63 (checked Oct 15, 2026). Just keep in mind that nobody has shown the Clek Olli or the Diono Connect3 RXT in a RAV4.
Something else to note is that a booster kid has to buckle themselves between two other car seats. On the 2026, Cars.com found the outer buckles sit on short stalks flush with the cushion, and the middle buckle is floppy. And on the 2025, the raised edge of the cushion pushed the booster onto the buckle. So it's worth checking that your older kid can actually reach the buckle with car seats on both sides.
Narrow car seats for a RAV4 at a glance
| Car seat | What it showed in a RAV4 | Price (checked Oct 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Graco SlimFit3 LX | Three fit in a 2019 to 2021 RAV4, confirmed by Graco | $299.99 at Graco (out of stock), $229.99 to $299.99 at Walmart |
| Diono Radian 3R | Two Radian 3R seats plus a Chicco seat fit in one owner's 2022 RAV4 Hybrid | $184.74 on Amazon |
| Clek Foonf | Fit behind the passenger in a 2023 RAV4, as one of two seats | From $649.99 at Clek |
| Clek Fllo | Fit in the middle in a 2023 RAV4, as one of two seats | From $499.99 at Clek |
| BubbleBum booster | Named by CarseatBlog for the tightest spot, not shown in a RAV4 | $60.95 at BubbleBum |
Rear-facing car seats behind a tall driver or passenger
So a rear-facing car seat, where the baby faces the back of the car, takes legroom away from whoever sits in front of it. And this is why a lot of RAV4 families end up moving the rear-facing car seat from one side of the back seat to the other. The table below shows how much room the person in front had in each test.
| RAV4 | Person in front | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 Hybrid, 2022 and 2023 Prime | Cars.com's shorter passenger | The passenger seat had to move forward for the rear-facing convertible. Cars.com says taller passengers may lack comfortable legroom. |
| 2023 XSE Hybrid | The Car Mom, about 6 feet, in their driving position | They said they didn't have a ton of clearance in front of a rear-facing Clek Foonf. |
| 2025 Hybrid | A 5'6" passenger | The passenger was fine after moving the seat forward about an inch. |
| 2026 Hybrid Limited | A 5'6" passenger | The passenger had good legroom with an infant seat and a rear-facing convertible. |
| 2026 Hybrid LE | A 5'8" passenger | The passenger needed more legroom with the infant seat, and could have used more space with the rear-facing convertible. |
| 2026 | J.Mak, a 5'11" driver | The Clek Liing infant seat at its most reclined didn't fit at first. J.Mak moved their seat forward a little and was fine. The rear-facing Clek Foonf left them lots of knee room. |
| 2026 | A 5'2" passenger | There was room for a rear-facing seat, per a family review by Micah Muzio. |
So ultimately, how much room is left in front of a rear-facing car seat depends on the car seat. A 5'6" passenger was fine in Cars.com's checks, a 5'8" passenger needed more room in Cars.com's 2026 LE check, and a 5'11" car seat technician fit in front of Clek seats. My RAV4 car seat install guide has every height report. J.Mak says that at 6'4" to 6'6" you're not going to be comfortable. J.Mak's fix is to put the rear-facing car seat in the middle, so the tall parent keeps their legroom. But with three car seats there's no middle spot left, so a rear-facing car seat has to sit behind someone. So if one parent is well over 6 feet and you need three car seats, a bigger vehicle is worth a look.
Other things that make three car seats harder in a RAV4
- The 2026's back doors don't open to 90 degrees, so lifting an infant carrier in is awkward, according to J.Mak. They say the back doors on the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue open wider. How far the 2019 to 2025 RAV4's back doors open isn't confirmed.
- The 2026's buckles are short and low. Short, low buckles are hard for a booster kid to reach, and harder still between two car seats.
- The RAV4's middle back seat is narrow, as The Car Mom found in a 2023. They prefer seat belt installs for three across, because a belt install lets you shift a car seat side to side more than LATCH does.
What to buy instead if three car seats won't fit
So if the narrow car seat route doesn't work for your kids' ages, or a tall parent rules out the rear-facing seat, the next step is a bigger vehicle. I compare the Highlander, Grand Highlander and Sienna for families in my RAV4 vs Highlander vs Sienna guide. Cars.com keeps a list called "Which Cars Fit 3 Car Seats?", last updated Sep 14, 2026. Cars.com tested each vehicle with a booster, a convertible and a rear-facing infant seat. The front seats were set for a 6-foot driver and a 5'6" passenger.
| Vehicle | Fits three car seats across, per Cars.com? | Starting price (toyota.com, checked Oct 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Toyota RAV4 | No | $31,900 |
| Toyota Sienna minivan | Yes, the 2021 Sienna with the 8-seat bench, which is the first year of the current Sienna. The Sienna with captain's chairs in the second row doesn't fit three across there. | $41,320 for the 2026 Sienna LE, which comes with the 8-seat bench |
| Toyota 4Runner | Yes, the 2019 and 2020 4Runner (also the 2014, 2015 and 2018). The 2025 and newer 4Runner isn't on the list. | $42,270 for the 2026 |
| Toyota Grand Highlander | No, the 2024 and 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE with captain's chairs. Cars.com hasn't tested a Grand Highlander with the 8-seat bench. | $42,260 for the 2026 gas Grand Highlander LE, or $45,610 for the 2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid LE |
| Toyota Highlander | Only the old 2014 Highlander. The 2023 Highlander Hybrid with captain's chairs that Cars.com tested didn't fit three. Cars.com hasn't tested a 2020 or newer Highlander with the 8-seat bench. | $46,270 for the 2026 gas Highlander XLE, or $48,020 for the 2026 Highlander Hybrid XLE |
Now keep in mind that Cars.com did test the newer three-row Toyota SUVs. The 2024 and 2025 Grand Highlander and the 2023 Highlander Hybrid all had captain's chairs in the second row, and none of them fit three car seats across. Cars.com hasn't tested either one with the 8-seat bench. And with captain's chairs, three car seats means putting one in the third row, where the Highlander and Grand Highlander are tight. So if you're looking at a three-row Toyota, it's worth bringing your three car seats to the dealer and trying them.
And besides the Toyotas in the table, Cars.com's list includes the Toyota Land Cruiser and the 2025 Toyota Tundra. If you want a two-row SUV close to the RAV4's size, the list has the 2026 Honda Passport and the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It also has the 2025 Nissan Murano. Each of those links goes to the maker's own page, where you'll find the current price.
Something to note is that switching to a Honda CR-V Hybrid doesn't solve the three-kid problem. Cars.com's check of the 2027 Honda CR-V Hybrid says the CR-V Hybrid does not fit three. But for two kids, the RAV4 Hybrid and the CR-V Hybrid are both worth a look, and I compare them in my RAV4 Hybrid vs CR-V Hybrid guide.
Videos about car seats in a RAV4 worth watching
A certified car seat technician installs a Clek Liing infant seat and a Clek Foonf in a 2026 RAV4.
- Where the anchors are: They show two sets of lower anchors tucked into the seat crack and three top tether anchors behind the back seats.
- Room in front: The Liing at its most reclined needed them to move their 5'11" driving position forward a little. The rear-facing Foonf left them plenty of knee room.
- Tether tip: For a forward-facing car seat, they take the headrest off and run the tether through the slit. Then they make sure the hook grabs the metal anchor and not the fabric.
- J.Mak's verdict: They say two car seats fit well in the 2026 RAV4, but three don't. They also point out the 2026 RAV4's back doors don't open to 90 degrees.
A certified car seat technician tries to fit three slim car seats across a 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid.
- Three across: After about four combinations of slim car seats, they couldn't fit three across.
- What fit: A Clek Foonf and a Clek Fllo went in fine. The UPPAbaby Mesa infant carrier wouldn't click into its base as the third seat, because the carrier is wider than the base and there wasn't room for it.
- Belt or LATCH: They prefer seat belt installs for three across, because a belt install gives more side to side wiggle room than LATCH.
- Plan ahead: They remind parents to plan for the next stages too, like forward-facing seats and boosters.
An owner, not a technician, shows three car seats across their 2022 RAV4 XLE Hybrid.
- The setup: Two Diono Radian 3R seats face forward, one of them in the middle, and a Chicco seat faces the back. The kids are aged 1, 4 and 6.
- How the seats are attached: They say one seat is on LATCH and the middle seat uses its tether. They don't say whether the middle seat is belted in, but the RAV4 manual says the middle seat would have to be.
- Keep in mind: This is one family's car seats in one RAV4. So the video shows three across can work, not that your car seats will.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the RAV4 is a good fit for two car seats, and the IIHS rates its anchors Good+ from 2019 to 2025. But the back seat is tight in every RAV4 from 2019 to 2026, so three ordinary car seats don't fit.
If you love the RAV4 and your kids' ages fit Graco's combinations, I'd look at three Graco SlimFit3 LX seats. That's the one setup a maker has confirmed. Then I'd have a certified car seat technician check the three-across install before you rely on it.
But if your third seat is an infant carrier, or one of you is well over 6 feet, I'd look at a bigger vehicle like the Toyota Sienna minivan. The 2026 Sienna starts at $41,320, about $9,400 more than the 2026 RAV4 at $31,900 (toyota.com, checked Oct 15, 2026). Cars.com fit three car seats across the second row of a Sienna with the 8-seat bench. The Sienna with captain's chairs doesn't fit three across in the second row, and the 8-seat Sienna can be hard to find on dealer lots, so ask for it by name. I go through the bigger options in my RAV4 vs Highlander vs Sienna guide.
So hopefully this helps you figure out whether the RAV4 still works for your family.
