Which Toyota Safety Sense each RAV4 year has
So the version of Toyota Safety Sense depends on the year and the powertrain, not the trim. Every trim in a given year gets the same Toyota Safety Sense features.
| Your RAV4 | Toyota Safety Sense version |
|---|---|
| 2019 to 2022 gas and Hybrid | TSS 2.0 |
| 2021 to 2022 RAV4 Prime | TSS 2.0 |
| 2023 to 2025 gas and Hybrid | TSS 2.5 |
| 2023 to 2024 RAV4 Prime, 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid | TSS 2.5+ in Toyota's brochures. The owner's manuals just say TSS 2.5. |
| 2026 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid, every trim | TSS 4.0 |
Something to note is that no RAV4 ever had TSS 3.0. Other Toyotas got TSS 3.0, but the RAV4 went straight from TSS 2.5 to TSS 4.0. So if a listing or a video calls a 2026 RAV4 "TSS 3.0," that's a mix-up. The 2026 RAV4 has TSS 4.0.
And the 2016 to 2018 RAV4 had an older version called TSS-P. My radar cruise and lane centering guide shows what TSS-P's cruise could and couldn't do.
What Toyota Safety Sense is, and what isn't part of it
So Toyota Safety Sense, or TSS, is Toyota's name for its standard set of driver aids. Basically, TSS uses two sensors: a camera at the top of the windshield and a radar behind the Toyota emblem on the front of the RAV4. The camera and radar watch the road ahead, help you avoid hitting things, help keep you in your lane and handle your high beams.
Now a lot of people mix up which features belong to TSS. These RAV4 features are not part of Toyota Safety Sense, even though they're safety features too:
- Blind Spot Monitor, which watches the lanes beside you.
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which watches for cars when you back out.
- The parking sensors and Parking Support Brake (PKSB), which can brake for you at parking speeds. My PKSB guide covers PKSB.
- The 360 camera, covered in my RAV4 360 camera guide.
- Safe Exit Assist, which warns you if a car or bike is coming before you open your door, and the rear seat reminder.
On the 2026, Lane Change Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert and Traffic Jam Assist aren't part of TSS 4.0 either. Those three come with certain trims and packages, which is why only some 2026 trims have them.
Every RAV4 safety feature in one plain sentence
So here's what each feature does for you, and what it sounds or looks like.
- Pre-Collision System (PCS): PCS watches the road ahead. If you're about to hit a car, a person or a bike, PCS beeps, shows "BRAKE!" on the gauge screen and can brake for you. On a 2026, PCS also watches for motorcycles.
- Radar cruise: radar cruise is cruise control that keeps a gap to the car ahead and can follow that car all the way down to a stop.
- Lane Tracing Assist (LTA): while radar cruise is on, LTA steers gently to keep you in the middle of the lane. You still steer.
- Lane departure alert: the lane departure alert beeps if you drift over a line without your turn signal on, and can nudge the wheel back. On every 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime and Plug-in Hybrid and on the 2026, the alert can vibrate the wheel instead of beeping.
- Automatic High Beams: Automatic High Beams switch between high and low beams for you.
- Road Sign Assist: Road Sign Assist shows the last speed limit, stop, yield or do not enter sign on the gauge screen.
- Blind Spot Monitor: Blind Spot Monitor lights a symbol in the side mirror when a car is beside you. On a 2026, Blind Spot Monitor also beeps if you signal toward that car.
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert: Rear Cross-Traffic Alert warns you about cars coming from the side when you back out of a parking spot.
- Proactive Driving Assist (2026 only): Proactive Driving Assist gently slows you for a car ahead or a curve, and nudges the wheel, even with cruise off.
The gauge screen is the screen behind the steering wheel. And if you want to know what a specific beep means, my RAV4 beeps guide goes through every one.
TSS 2.0 vs 2.5 vs 2.5+ vs 4.0, feature by feature
So this is the table to look at if you're deciding between years.
| Feature | 2019 to 2022 (TSS 2.0) | 2023 to 2025 gas and Hybrid (TSS 2.5) | 2023 to 2025 Prime and Plug-in Hybrid (TSS 2.5+) | 2026 (TSS 4.0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic emergency braking (Pre-Collision System) | Cars, people walking and people on bikes | Cars, people walking and people on bikes | Cars, people walking and people on bikes | Cars, people walking, bikes, motorcycles and walls |
| Lowest speed for the warning and braking for a car ahead | About 7 mph | About 7 mph | About 7 mph | About 3 mph |
| Help when you turn left or right at an intersection | No | Yes, for oncoming cars and for people walking in your path | Yes | Yes, plus oncoming motorcycles and bikes |
| Warning and braking for a car crossing in front of you | No | No | No | Yes |
| Emergency steering assist | No | Yes, for people walking, at about 25 to 50 mph | Yes, for cars, bikes and people walking, at about 25 to 50 mph | Yes |

The 2021 to 2022 Prime also has a wheel vibration option. | Yes, with road edge detection and a warning if you sway in the lane | Yes, with road edge detection, the sway warning and a wheel vibration option | Yes, with a wheel vibration option and Obstacle Anticipation Assist |
| Automatic High Beams | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Road Sign Assist | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Proactive Driving Assist | No | No | No | Yes |
| Emergency Driving Stop System | No | No | No | Yes |
For the radar cruise and lane centering rows, my radar cruise and Lane Tracing Assist guide has the following distances, the buttons and the 2026 cruise modes. And my lane departure guide covers the lane departure alert on every year.
What TSS 2.5 added on the 2023 to 2025 RAV4
So TSS 2.5 kept everything from TSS 2.0 and added two things to the Pre-Collision System.
- Intersection turn help. Basically, when you turn left or right with your turn signal on, PCS watches for an oncoming car crossing your path. PCS also watches for a person walking in the direction you're turning. Intersection turn help works at about 7 to 15 mph. On a 2023 to 2025, intersection turn help doesn't watch for bikes.
- Emergency steering assist. Basically, if you start to swerve around something inside your lane, the RAV4 helps you steer around it. On the 2023 to 2025 gas and Hybrid, emergency steering assist only reacts to people walking. On the 2023 to 2025 Prime and Plug-in Hybrid, emergency steering assist also reacts to cars and bikes. On every 2023 to 2025 RAV4, emergency steering assist works at about 25 to 50 mph.
The TSS 2.5+ on the 2023 to 2025 Prime and Plug-in Hybrid also adds curve speed reduction to radar cruise. Toyota says curve speed reduction uses the camera and the RAV4's turning sensors to sense a curve and slow down.
Now owners on RAV4World have an opinion here too. About 6 owners describe 2019 to 2022 lane centering wandering or following exit ramps, and 2 to 3 owners say TSS 2.5 lane centering is smoother. Toyota hasn't said TSS 2.5 tracks better, so that's owner opinion.
What TSS 4.0 adds on the 2026 RAV4
So if you're wondering whether a 2025 will feel old on day one, here's what TSS 4.0 actually adds over TSS 2.5, in plain words.
- Motorcycles and walls. The 2026's Pre-Collision System also watches for motorcycles being ridden and for walls.
- Lower starting speed. The forward warning works from about 3 mph instead of about 7 mph.
- Crossing traffic. PCS can warn and brake for a car crossing in front of you at an intersection, at your speeds of about 3 to 50 mph.
- More intersection turn help. On a turn, PCS also watches for oncoming motorcycles and for bikes.
- Acceleration Suppression at Low Speed. Basically, if you press the gas hard toward something at about 0 to 9 mph, the RAV4 holds back the power.
- Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). PDA gently slows you down for a car or motorcycle ahead or cutting in, slows you for curves, and gently helps you steer in your lane. PDA works in everyday driving at about 15 to 80 mph for the slowing, and about 5 to 80 mph for the steering. Toyota says PDA cancels whenever radar cruise is on.
- Emergency Driving Stop System. Basically, say you're on radar cruise and Lane Tracing Assist at about 22 mph or more. If you stop responding, the RAV4 beeps, slows down and stops in its lane. Then the RAV4 sets the parking brake and turns on the flashers. The RAV4 also calls for help through Safety Connect, but only if you subscribe to Toyota's Safety Connect.
- Radar cruise changes. The 2026 has 4 following distances instead of 3, plus acceleration and curve speed settings. My radar cruise guide covers those.
Now as for how TSS 4.0 feels on the road, the reviews are positive. Consumer Reports found the 2026's lane centering smoother, and its radar cruise smoother when speeding up and slowing down. Kelley Blue Book called Proactive Driving Assist "unobtrusive, yet a real stress reliever." And CarPro's review of a 2026 Limited called PDA "fantastic."
So ultimately, a 2025 has everything a 2019 to 2022 RAV4 has, plus intersection and emergency steering help. And the 2026 adds another layer on top, mostly at intersections and in everyday driving. For everything else that changed, see my 2026 vs 2025 RAV4 guide.
Which 2026 RAV4 trims get the extra driver aids
So when people talk about "the 2026 safety tech," they often mean four driver aids that aren't part of TSS 4.0. Here's what each one does:
- Lane Change Assist steers the lane change for you when you nudge the turn signal with Lane Tracing Assist on.
- Front Cross-Traffic Alert warns you about cars crossing in front when you pull out.
- Traffic Jam Assist lets you take your hands off the wheel in a highway traffic jam at about 25 mph or less. Toyota says Traffic Jam Assist needs an active Drive Connect trial or subscription.
- The Driver Monitor camera watches the driver. If you're not facing forward, the pre-collision warning comes earlier than usual.
| 2026 RAV4 trim | Lane Change Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert, Traffic Jam Assist and the Driver Monitor camera | Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Safe Exit Assist |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid LE | Not available | Standard |
| Hybrid SE | Not available | Standard |
| Hybrid XLE Premium | In the XLE Driver Assist Package, $650 (checked Oct 15, 2026) | Standard |
| Hybrid Woodland and Plug-in Woodland | Standard | Standard |
| Hybrid XSE and Plug-in XSE | Standard | Standard |
| Hybrid Limited | Standard | Standard |
Keep in mind Traffic Jam Assist needs an active Drive Connect trial or subscription, and it isn't confirmed that every trim with Traffic Jam Assist comes with the free trial. Drive Connect is in Toyota's Premium plan, which is $15 a month on Toyota's connected services plans page (checked Oct 15, 2026).
And Advanced Park, the self-parking feature, is standard on the Limited. Advanced Park comes in the $420 XSE Driver Assist Package on the Hybrid XSE, and the $1,170 Driver Assist Package on the Plug-in XSE (both checked Oct 15, 2026). For the full trim list, see my 2026 RAV4 trims guide.
Blind Spot Monitor on each RAV4 year
So Blind Spot Monitor isn't part of Toyota Safety Sense, and on the 2019 to 2025 LE and Hybrid LE, Blind Spot Monitor was optional.
- 2019 to 2025 LE and Hybrid LE: Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert was a factory option, not standard. From 2020 to 2025, the option cost $590 when new, under Toyota's option code BD.
- 2019 to 2025 XLE and higher trims: Blind Spot Monitor is standard.
- 2021 to 2025 Prime and Plug-in Hybrid: Blind Spot Monitor is standard.
- 2026, every trim including the LE: Blind Spot Monitor is standard.
Now if you're looking at a used 2019 to 2025 LE, that LE may or may not have Blind Spot Monitor. Blind Spot Monitor on a used LE comes down to whether the first owner paid for the option. So the easy check is to look for a small blind spot light in the glass of each outside mirror. Or ask for the original window sticker and look for option code BD. My used RAV4 buying guide has the rest of the test drive checks.
And Blind Spot Monitor works a little differently by year. On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, Blind Spot Monitor only lights the mirror and doesn't beep. On a 2026, Blind Spot Monitor also beeps when you signal toward a car in your blind spot. The 2026 also lets you dim the mirror light, change the alert timing and turn the beep off on the center touchscreen. Toyota's manual notes that if you turn the Blind Spot Monitor buzzer off, "the display will also be off."
Where the safety settings are on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4
So on every 2019 to 2025 RAV4, most of the safety switches are on the gauge screen. You get to them with the arrow and OK buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. Pick the gear icon, then highlight the feature, like PCS, LTA or RCTA. Press OK to turn that feature on or off, or press and hold OK for that feature's detailed settings. The LTA button on the steering wheel turns Lane Tracing Assist on and off.
My RAV4 beeps guide has the exact steps for the 7-inch and the 12.3-inch gauge screens. And my lane departure guide covers every lane setting.
Now for the Pre-Collision System on a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, here's what to know:
- You can set the PCS warning timing to Early, Middle or Late. Middle is the default.
- You can turn PCS off, but PCS turns itself back on every time you start the RAV4.
- If you turn PCS off and back on, the warning timing goes back to Middle.
- On a 2023 to 2025 RAV4, Toyota's manual says setting the PCS timing to Late means emergency steering assist won't work in an emergency. So I'd leave the timing on Middle or Early.
Where the TSS 4.0 settings are on a 2026 RAV4
So on the 2026, almost all the driver aid settings moved off the gauge screen and onto the center touchscreen. Here's the path:
- On the center touchscreen, tap the gear icon, which is Settings.
- Tap Driving Assist.
- Pick one of four groups. Driver Support has Proactive Driving Assist and the radar cruise settings. Parking Assist has the parking sensors, PKSB and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Collision Mitigation has the lane departure alert, the Pre-Collision System, Blind Spot Monitor and Safe Exit Assist. Notifications has Road Sign Assist and the Driver Monitor.
And there's a shortcut. The quick control screen pulls down from the top of the touchscreen, and the quick control screen has shortcuts to the safety settings. My 2026 touchscreen guide shows how to open the quick control screen.
Here's what you can change on a 2026:
- Pre-Collision System: On or Off only. There's no Early, Middle or Late warning timing on the 2026. And PCS turns itself back on every time you start the RAV4.
- Proactive Driving Assist: On or Off, a support level of Low, Mid or High, and separate On or Off switches for the steering help and the slowing help.
- Lane departure alert: the timing, and whether the alert beeps, vibrates the wheel or both. My lane departure guide has the 2026 steps.
- Road Sign Assist: On or Off, a speed limit warning that's visual, visual and audible, or off, and how far over the limit you can go before Road Sign Assist warns you: 1, 3 or 5 mph.
- Driver Monitor, if your 2026 has the camera: On or Off, a warning sensitivity of High, Low or Off, and a break suggestion.
- The volume of all the driving assist beeps: under Settings, then General, then Volume.
Something to note is that most 2026 safety settings follow your driver profile, which Toyota calls My Settings. So if two people drive the RAV4, each of them can have their own alert settings. My 2026 touchscreen guide covers driver profiles.
What turns 2026 safety features off without you meaning to
So on a 2026, turning off one thing can switch off other safety features too. Toyota's 2026 manual lists these:
- Turning off the Pre-Collision System also turns off Proactive Driving Assist and the Emergency Driving Stop System, and weakens the lane departure alert.
- Turning off VSC, the stability control, turns off the lane departure alert, Proactive Driving Assist and the Emergency Driving Stop System, and weakens the Pre-Collision System. Turning off TRAC, the traction control, turns off Proactive Driving Assist and weakens the lane departure alert.
- Turning off the Driver Monitor camera turns off Lane Change Assist, Proactive Driving Assist and Traffic Jam Assist. Turning off the camera also weakens the Pre-Collision System, the lane departure alert, Lane Tracing Assist and radar cruise.
- Using Trail Mode or Downhill Assist Control on an AWD RAV4 turns off Proactive Driving Assist and weakens the lane departure alert. So if you use Trail Mode to get unstuck in snow, PDA stays off until you leave Trail Mode.
- Unbuckling the driver's seat belt turns off Proactive Driving Assist.
- Using Trailer Driving Assist, on a 2026 that has it, turns off Lane Change Assist, Proactive Driving Assist and Traffic Jam Assist. Trailer Driving Assist also turns off Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, rear camera detection and PKSB while Trailer Driving Assist is in use.
When one of these settings turns other features off, the 2026 shows "Some Driving Assist Systems Are Deactivated" or "Some Driving Assist Systems Have Reduced Functionality." On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, turning off VSC leaves only the pre-collision warning, with no automatic braking. My Pre-Collision System Unavailable guide explains that.
Toyota Safety Sense in snow, and when Toyota says to turn it off
So the radar behind the front emblem and the camera on the windshield both need a clear view. When snow or ice covers the radar or the camera, you'll see messages like "Pre-Collision System Unavailable," and radar cruise stops working. My guide to cleaning the radar and camera walks through the fix, and my RAV4 in snow guide covers winter driving in general.
Now Toyota's 2026 manual lists when to turn TSS 4.0 off:
- A tire is overloaded, flat, worn or low, or it's the wrong size.
- You're using the compact spare, tire chains or a tire repair kit.
- You're driving at extremely high speeds, in a sporty way or off-road.
- The RAV4 is on a truck or a ship, is on a lift or a dyno, or is going through an automatic car wash.
- You're towing another vehicle.
- A sensor got knocked out of line, an accessory blocks a sensor or a light, or the RAV4 is damaged.
For car washes, my RAV4 car wash checklist covers what to switch off. And my Pre-Collision System guide has the 2019 to 2025 list.
Keep in mind Toyota says not to try testing the Pre-Collision System yourself.
Which RAV4 year makes sense if safety tech matters to you
- If you're buying a used 2019 to 2022 RAV4, you still get automatic emergency braking, radar cruise with stop-and-go and lane centering. You also get the lane departure alert, Automatic High Beams and Road Sign Assist. What you give up is intersection turn help and emergency steering assist. Just check a used LE for Blind Spot Monitor. My RAV4 years to avoid guide covers the other differences between years.
- If you're deciding between a 2025 and a 2026, the 2026 adds crossing-traffic braking, motorcycle detection, Proactive Driving Assist and Emergency Driving Stop. And Blind Spot Monitor is standard on every 2026. But if you want Lane Change Assist or Traffic Jam Assist, you need an XLE Premium with the package, a Woodland, an XSE or a Limited.
- If you mostly want help with the blind spot and a plain set of alerts, look at a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 above the LE, or any 2026. Those RAV4s have Blind Spot Monitor standard. And you can turn most of these alerts up, down or off, so you keep the beeps you want.
So ultimately, the newer the RAV4, the more Toyota Safety Sense does for you. But even a 2019 has the core features: automatic emergency braking, stop-and-go radar cruise and lane centering.
And for crash test ratings, the IIHS, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, hasn't rated the 2026 RAV4 as of October 15, 2026. My 2026 vs 2025 RAV4 guide has the 2025 ratings.
Videos that explain Toyota Safety Sense
Toyota's own video explains what TSS 2.5 and 2.5+ add, using general Toyota graphics rather than a RAV4.
- Intersection help: They show the warning for an oncoming car or a person walking on a left turn, and a person walking on a right turn.
- Emergency steering assist: They say emergency steering assist reacts "to a pedestrian for TSS 2.5, as well as a vehicle or bicyclist for 2.5+."
- Curves: They explain that TSS 2.5+ radar cruise slows for curves using the camera and the turning sensors.
- Lane centering: They explain that Lane Tracing Assist needs radar cruise on. They also mention a wheel vibration "on some vehicles," and on the RAV4 that's every 2021 to 2025 Prime and Plug-in Hybrid and the 2026.
Rodney walks through every TSS 4.0 screen on a 2026 SE, which makes this the best video for 2026 owners.
- Driver Support: They show Proactive Driving Assist with its Low, Mid and High support levels, and the radar cruise acceleration and curve settings.
- Collision Mitigation: They open the lane departure, Pre-Collision, Blind Spot and Safe Exit settings.
- The shortcut: They show the quick control screen, where the safety features are "all right there at your fingertips."
- Two things to skip past: They mention a TSS 3.0 in the RAV4's history, but the RAV4 went from 2.5 to 4.0. And they say lane departure works over 32 mph, while Toyota's 2026 press release says above 30 mph.
Luther Brookdale Toyota gives a calm, plain explainer, which is good if the terms are new to you.
- The sensors: They show where the camera and the radar are.
- Radar cruise: They explain that the car "can also come to a complete stop" and you press resume to go again.
- Lane help: They explain the difference between the lane departure alert, which gives "a little input," and Lane Tracing Assist, which gives "constant input" on radar cruise.
- Road Sign Assist: They show the four signs Road Sign Assist reads: speed limit, stop, yield and do not enter.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has Toyota Safety Sense standard, and even a 2019 has automatic emergency braking, stop-and-go radar cruise and lane centering. TSS 2.5 on the 2023 to 2025 adds intersection and emergency steering help, and TSS 4.0 on the 2026 adds the most.
For me personally, the one thing I'd double-check on a used RAV4 is Blind Spot Monitor on an LE. And on a 2026, I'd spend five minutes in the Driving Assist settings and set the alerts once, the way I like them.
So hopefully this helps you figure out which RAV4 has the safety features you want.
