For a family of five, the RAV4 only works sometimes. Three ordinary car seats across don't fit in any US test from 2019 to 2026, so the RAV4 suits five people once the kids are older. The tightest spot for most families is the front passenger seat in front of a rear-facing car seat, and how tight depends on the car seat and the passenger's height.
Quick picks
So if you're expecting number two and wondering whether the stroller and the car seats still fit in a RAV4, the cargo area usually isn't the problem. The tight spot is the front passenger seat in front of a rear-facing car seat. And for a family of five, the back seat runs out of width before the cargo area runs out of room.
RAV4 cargo space by year and powertrain
Basically, "behind the back seat" is the cargo area with the back seats up, which is how a family drives most of the time. "Back seats folded" is the space with the back seats laid flat, all the way to the front seats. Both are measured in cubic feet, so a bigger number means more room.
| RAV4 years and powertrain | Behind the back seat | Back seats folded | Cargo floor length with the back seats up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 | 37.5 to 37.6 cubic feet | 69.8 cubic feet | 40.0 inches |
| 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | 37.5 to 37.6 cubic feet | 69.8 cubic feet | 40.0 inches |
| 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime (called the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2025) | 33.5 cubic feet | 69.8 cubic feet | 40.0 inches |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid, most trims | 37.8 cubic feet | 70.4 cubic feet | 37.8 inches |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited | 36.6 cubic feet | Not listed separately | Not listed separately |
| 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid | 33.6 cubic feet | About 64 cubic feet, as measured by Car and Driver on a Woodland | Not listed separately |
So if you've seen 69.8 cubic feet on one site and 70.4 on another, both numbers are right. The 69.8 is the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 with the back seats folded, and the 70.4 is the 2026 RAV4.
Now the RAV4 Prime and the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid have less room behind the back seat because their bigger battery raises the cargo floor. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited is also a little smaller than the other 2026 trims, but Toyota doesn't say why.
Something to note is the 2026 RAV4's cargo floor is about 2 inches shorter than the 2019 to 2025 RAV4's floor. Toyota lists 37.8 inches, and Dietrich's Car Channel measured 38 inches in a 2026 XLE Premium with a laser tape. But the 2026's total cargo space still went up a little. The 2026's cargo area is a little wider at its widest point, 60.5 inches against 59.0. And Edmunds says the 2026 has hardly any bump where the back wheels come into the cargo area.
Toyota's spec books list a cargo floor that sits at two heights as standard on every 2020 to 2025 gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, and on the 2022 to 2025 RAV4 Prime. Cars.com says the 2026 RAV4's cargo floor adjusts too. Basically, you can drop the cargo floor down a notch for taller bags, and one owner measured that the lower spot adds about 2 inches of depth in their 2024 RAV4 Hybrid. The 2026 also keeps a temporary spare tire under the cargo floor, and Cars.com says that spare is full diameter, the same height as the regular tires. If you plan to sleep in the back or want every measurement, my RAV4 cargo measurements for sleeping lists them by year.
Why Cars.com's RAV4 cargo number is about half of Toyota's
So Toyota says the 2026 RAV4 has 37.8 cubic feet behind the back seat, and Cars.com measured 19.4 cubic feet in a 2026 RAV4 Limited. Neither one is wrong. They're just measuring different spaces.
Basically, Toyota counts all the empty space in the cargo area, right up to the roof. Cars.com only counts the space below the top of the back seat. Cars.com stops there because bags piled higher than the back seat can fly forward into the cabin in a crash.
And Toyota's own owner's manual says the same thing. It says not to stack anything in the cargo area higher than the seatbacks, and not to put anything on top of the cargo cover. So for a family packing for a trip, Cars.com's number is closer to the space you should actually use.
Now on Cars.com's own scale, the RAV4 is about in the middle of its class. Cars.com measured 8 compact SUVs, and the 2026 RAV4 LE came 4th with 19.8 cubic feet, including 1.3 cubic feet under the floor. The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (21.8), Kia Sportage Hybrid (21.4) and Honda CR-V Hybrid (20.2) had more. The Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, Volkswagen Tiguan and Ford Bronco Sport had less. Each link goes to the maker's page for that model.
Cars.com also measured the previous RAV4 (2019 to 2025) at 18.6 cubic feet, so the 2026 RAV4 has a little less than 1 cubic foot more by Cars.com's method.
How many suitcases fit in a RAV4
So the most useful real-world test is Car and Driver's, because Car and Driver uses the same carry-on suitcase in every car it tests.
| Vehicle | Carry-ons behind the back seat | Carry-ons with the back seats folded |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2025 RAV4, gas and Hybrid | 10 | 22 |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid | 10 | 24 |
| 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid | 11 | 29 |
Keep in mind those are carry-on suitcases, which are smaller than the big checked bags a family takes on a week-long trip. In a HardReset.info video of a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, two maximum-size suitcases, one medium and one small suitcase went in flat. The hatch wouldn't close until the suitcases were turned up on their sides, and then all four fit. So if big suitcases won't fit lying down, stand them on their sides.
And a UK owner measured their 2024 RAV4 Hybrid, which is the same body as the US RAV4. The cargo floor is about 39 inches deep at floor level, but only 30 to 31 inches deep at the top, because the back seat leans back. Basically, the cargo area gets shallower as you stack higher, so put the biggest bags on the floor.
Which strollers fit in a RAV4
So the best stroller test is from The Car Mom, a certified car seat technician. They laid a full-size UPPAbaby Vista flat in the cargo area of a 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid. They didn't take off the wheels, the seat or the handlebar, and they said they were impressed with the cargo area. The video doesn't say which Vista version it was. The current UPPAbaby Vista V3 is $999.99 on UPPAbaby's site (checked Oct 15, 2026).
Now the numbers back that up. UPPAbaby lists the Vista V3 folded, with the seat on, at 33.8 inches tall and 25.7 inches wide. Laid flat, that fits on the 2019 to 2025 RAV4's 40 by 39.4 inch cargo floor, and on the 2026 RAV4's 37.8 inch floor too. That leaves about 13 inches of width beside the Vista, which is enough for a duffel bag or a few grocery bags.
And BabyDrive, an Australian car review site for parents, loaded several strollers into a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser:
- BabyDrive's Duet, a side-by-side twin stroller, fit with 5 shopping bags around it.
- A tandem stroller (one seat behind the other) fit with 6 shopping bags, all below the cargo cover.
- BabyDrive's Urban Jungle, a single three-wheel stroller, fit with 8 shopping bags beside it.
- BabyDrive's Nano, a compact stroller, fit with 11 shopping bags beside it.
- The empty cargo area held 15 shopping bags.
Keep in mind BabyDrive's review only calls these strollers the Duet, the Urban Jungle and the Nano. Those names match Mountain Buggy strollers, but BabyDrive doesn't say the brand. So each link above is a search for that model name on Mountain Buggy's US store, which doesn't show a price.
Two more tests back this up. A Toyota dealer, Gates Auto Family, showed a standard-size stroller lying flat in a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 with room on either side and the cargo cover closed over it. And The Drive's new dad review of a 2019 RAV4 fit a bulky medium-size stroller, groceries and a weekend's luggage all at once. Neither one named the stroller brand.
Something to note is nobody has published a RAV4 test of a jogging stroller or a full travel system, and nobody has published a stroller test of a 2026 RAV4. But on paper, the Vista's folded size still fits flat on the 2026's cargo floor, with about the same room left beside it.
RAV4 back seat room for a family
So the RAV4's back seat has 37.8 inches of legroom in every model from 2019 to 2026, gas, Hybrid and plug-in. That's about 3 inches less than the Honda CR-V's 41.0 inches. Shoulder room is 56.4 inches, and hip room is 47.7 inches on the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 and 49.6 inches on the 2026.
But in real life, adults fit in the back fine. Dietrich, who's 6'5", sat behind their own driving position in a 2026 XLE Premium and had enough knee room and headroom. Micah Muzio, who's 5'10", had plenty of knee room in a 2026 Limited and said the middle seat works well because the floor bump makes a good footrest. Edmunds says adults should fit comfortably in both rows of the 2026.
And every 2019 to 2025 RAV4 trim has air vents for the back seat, per Toyota's spec books. Micah Muzio says the back seat vents are standard on the 2026 too. Rear USB ports and heated back seats depend on the trim, and my RAV4 trims guide lists which trims have them.
If you're comparing the RAV4 with the CR-V for back seat room, my RAV4 Hybrid vs CR-V Hybrid guide covers it side by side.
Car seats in a RAV4, and the front passenger problem
So two car seats fit in every RAV4 tested from 2019 to 2026. Cars.com said the 2026 RAV4 LE has ample room for two car seats.
Now the real squeeze is the front passenger. When a rear-facing car seat sits behind the front passenger seat, the front passenger has to slide forward. Here's how that went in the tests:
- A 5'2" front passenger had room in a 2026 RAV4 Limited, in Micah Muzio's family review.
- A 5'6" front passenger was fine in Cars.com's checks of the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid and the 2026 RAV4 Limited.
- A 5'8" front passenger needed more legroom in Cars.com's check of the 2026 RAV4 LE.
- The Car Mom, at about 6 feet, said they didn't have a ton of clearance in front of a rear-facing Clek Foonf in a 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid. The Clek Foonf is from $649.99 on Clek's site, and $50 more in the Mammoth fabric (checked Oct 15, 2026).
That's also what happened in the viral TikTok you may have seen, where a dad rides with their knees against the dash. Motor1 reported the video had over 3.5 million views, but Motor1 doesn't say which RAV4 year or car seat was in the video.
Basically, the easy fix for one rear-facing car seat is putting the car seat in the middle of the back seat, or behind the shorter parent. Keep in mind the RAV4's lower anchors are only on the two outer back seats, so a car seat in the middle usually goes in with the seat belt. And an adult may not fit between two car seats, which a 5'11" car seat technician found in a 2026 RAV4. And if you need three car seats across, or want the full test results by year, my three car seats in a RAV4 guide covers that in detail.
How much weight a RAV4 can carry, from Toyota's manual
So there are three limits worth knowing before a family road trip.
- Inside the cargo area: Toyota's owner's manual says not to stack anything higher than the back seatbacks. It also says not to put anything on the cargo cover, or any cargo at the driver's feet.
- On the roof: Toyota's owner's manuals for every 2019 to 2026 RAV4, Prime and Plug-in Hybrid included, say not to put more than 176.4 pounds on the roof rack. The rack and the roof box count toward that. My roof racks guide covers crossbars and roof boxes.
- The whole RAV4: Payload is the total weight of people and cargo the RAV4 is rated to carry. You'll find the exact number on the sticker in the driver's door jamb, and every extra passenger comes out of the weight left for cargo.
Now for the 2025 RAV4, Toyota lists payload at 1,015 to 1,230 pounds for the gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, depending on the trim. The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is 1,230 to 1,295 pounds. So say two adults weigh about 350 pounds together and three kids about 150 pounds. In a 2025 gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid, that leaves roughly 500 to 700 pounds for luggage and a roof box. For the 2026 RAV4, check the door jamb sticker.
When a family needs something bigger than a RAV4
So the RAV4 works for most families of four. But here's where the RAV4 starts to fall short for a family, and what to do instead:
- Three kids in car seats or boosters: Three ordinary car seats don't fit across any 2019 to 2026 RAV4 in US tests. My three car seats guide lists the narrow car seats that can work and the vehicles that fit three across easily.
- A tall front passenger plus a rear-facing car seat: Depending on the car seat, the front passenger seat can get tight for a taller passenger. Putting the rear-facing car seat in the middle usually solves it, and my RAV4 car seat install guide has the height reports.
- Two kids, a big dog and luggage, or a week-long trip for five: The cargo area fills up below the seatback line. So plan on a roof box on crossbars, like Toyota's Roof Rack Cross Bars (PT278-42192), or a hitch cargo carrier. Toyota's list price for those crossbars is $200, and Toyota Parts Deal had them for $174 (checked Oct 15, 2026). Toyota doesn't publish a separate weight rating for the crossbars, so the roof's 176.4 pounds is the limit to go by. And they don't fit the RAV4 Adventure. My RAV4 towing guide covers hitches.
- A plug-in hybrid buyer who needs every inch: The RAV4 Prime and the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid give up about 4 cubic feet behind the back seat. My 2026 Hybrid vs Plug-in Hybrid guide covers the trade-off.
- You're choosing between a RAV4 and a CR-V for back seat room: The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid has 3.2 more inches of back seat legroom. In Car and Driver's test, the 2026 CR-V Hybrid fit 11 carry-ons behind the back seat to the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid's 10. With the back seats folded, the count was 29 to 24. My RAV4 Hybrid vs CR-V Hybrid guide compares the rest.
And one RAV4 owner, Automotive Anonymous, found their 2025 RAV4 Hybrid SE quickly ran out of room on a 350-mile road trip with their spouse, a child and a dog. The stacked bags also blocked the small rear window. So if your family travels with a dog, it's worth test driving a bigger vehicle too, which is what they suggest.
Videos about the RAV4 as a family car worth watching
A certified car seat technician checks car seats, the back seat and the cargo area in a 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid.
- The stroller: An UPPAbaby Vista lies flat in the cargo area with nothing taken off, and they like the wide liftgate.
- Car seats: The two outer seats have lower anchors, and there are three top tether anchors. They couldn't fit three car seats across after about four combinations of slim car seats.
- Front passenger: At about 6 feet, they're tight in front of a rear-facing Clek Foonf.
- Back seat: They have decent knee room and good headroom, but the middle seat is narrow.
A family of three reviews a 2026 RAV4 Limited.
- Back seat: They're 5'10" and have plenty of knee room and headroom, and the middle seat works well.
- Back seat features: This 2026 Limited has back seat air vents, rear USB-C ports and heated back seats.
- Cargo area: They show the seat release levers on the cargo area walls, the two-height floor and the full spare tire underneath.
- The verdict: Micah's 5'2" wife says a rear-facing seat fits, the RAV4 is easy to park, and the CR-V has more passenger space.
A laser tape measure on a 2026 RAV4 XLE Premium AWD.
- Cargo area: 38 inches long, 39 to 59 inches wide and 33 inches tall, and about 68 inches long with the back seats folded.
- Lifting bags in: The cargo floor is 28 inches off the ground.
- Storage: The spare tire and the cargo cover both fit under the cargo floor.
- Back seat: At 6'5", they sit behind their own driving position comfortably.
An owner's take on their 2025 RAV4 Hybrid SE after a 350-mile road trip.
- Mileage: They got about 32 to 33 mpg at 80 mph.
- Cargo area: For a couple with a child and a dog, they say the RAV4 quickly runs out of room.
- Rear window: Stacked bags block the small rear window.
- The owner's advice: If you have a bigger family, test drive a bigger vehicle too.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the RAV4 is a good fit for a family of four. Two car seats fit, a full-size stroller lies flat in the back, and a gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid has the same room either way.
If you're a family of four and one of you is tall, I'd put the rear-facing car seat in the middle and pack below the seatbacks. And if you take long trips, I'd add a roof box.
But if you're a family of five with three kids still in car seats or boosters, the RAV4's back seat runs out of width. So I'd look at the narrow car seats and bigger vehicles in my three car seats guide first.
So hopefully this helps you figure out whether the RAV4 will still work once the next baby arrives.
