The numbers that decide what fits
So Toyota publishes cargo volume in cubic feet, but cubic feet don't tell you if a box will go through the liftgate. And Toyota doesn't publish the size of the liftgate opening for any year. So the opening height and folded floor length below are measurements people took on real RAV4s with a tape measure. Ross Perry measured a UK 2024 RAV4 Hybrid, which has the same body as the US one, and Dietrich's Car Channel measured a 2026 RAV4.
| Measurement | 2019 to 2025 RAV4 (measured on a UK 2024 RAV4 Hybrid) | 2026 RAV4 (measured on a 2026 XLE Premium) |
|---|---|---|
| Height at the liftgate opening | About 32 inches (81 cm) with the cargo floor up, about 34 inches (87 cm) with the cargo floor in its lower position | About 33 inches of inside height |
| Floor length with the back seats folded | About 67 to 71 inches to the front seats in driving position | About 68 inches (5 feet 8 inches) with the front passenger seat in the middle |
| Width between the rear wheel wells | 39.4 inches (Toyota) | 39.4 inches (Toyota) |
| Widest point of the cargo area | 59 inches (Toyota) | 60.5 inches (Toyota) |
| Liftover height (how high you lift things) | Not published | About 28 inches |
Now if you slide the front seats all the way forward, the folded floor gets longer, up to about 72 to 78 inches in a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. I go through those sleeping measurements in my sleeping in a RAV4 guide.
So here's the rule of thumb I'd use. Anything up to about 5 feet 6 inches long, under 39 inches wide and under 32 inches tall slides in flat with the back seats folded. Taller than 32 inches means it lies down. And wider than 39 inches has to ride up on top of the wheel wells, where the cargo area is 59 inches wide (60.5 on a 2026).
Keep in mind that Toyota lists 34.5 inches of interior height for 2019 to 2025, but that's measured inside the cargo area, not at the opening. And the RAV4 Prime and the 2026 Plug-in Hybrid have about 4 cubic feet less space behind the back seat, because the battery raises the cargo floor. The opening height on a Prime or Plug-in Hybrid isn't published, so plan on a little less height than the numbers above.
And the full cargo volume numbers by year are in my RAV4 family size guide.
Drop the cargo floor for about 2 more inches
So every 2020 to 2025 gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, and every 2022 to 2025 RAV4 Prime, has a cargo floor board that sits at two heights. Basically, the floor board lifts out and drops into a lower position. In Ross Perry's 2024 RAV4 Hybrid, the lower position raised the clear height at the opening from about 32 inches to about 34 inches. And for a tall box, those 2 inches can be the difference. How to move the floor board is in my RAV4 hidden features guide.
The RAV4 back seat reclines and folds 60/40, but it never slides
So the RAV4's back seat is split 60/40, which means it's two pieces, a bigger one and a smaller one. Each piece reclines and folds down on its own.
But the back seat doesn't slide forward or back on any 2019 to 2026 RAV4. Toyota's 2023 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid owner's manual (pages 161 to 162) and 2026 RAV4 owner's manual (pages 151 to 153) only show a seatback angle lever. So the space between the back seat and the cargo area never changes.
Here's how Toyota's 2026 manual says to fold the back seat:
- Park, and move the front seat and its seatback so the folded back seat won't hit it.
- Lower the center head restraint on the back seat.
- Stow the center back seat buckle and the center armrest.
- While you pull the seatback angle adjustment lever, fold the seatback down.
And when you lift the back seat up again, run the seat belt outside its guide and check that the red mark isn't showing. A red mark means the seatback isn't locked. How to recline the back seat, and Toyota's lap belt warning, are in my RAV4 hidden features guide.
Will it fit? The quick answer for each item
| Item | 2019 to 2025 gas and Hybrid | 2021 to 2025 Prime | 2026 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular queen mattress | Roof only, on crossbars (no roof rails on the 2025 gas LE) | Roof only | Roof only |
| Boxed foam queen mattress (18 x 18 x 45 in) | Inside, with the 40 side folded | Inside | Inside |
| 65-inch TV box | Lying flat, back seats folded | Lying flat, back seats folded (opening height not published) | Lying flat, back seats folded |
| 75-inch TV box | Tight. One 2022 owner did it lying flat with the passenger seat forward. | No owner report | No owner report |
| Adult bike | Inside with the front wheel off and the back seats folded | Same | Same |
| IKEA BILLY bookcase box (81 1/4 in long) | Probably not with the liftgate closed, and no RAV4 test has been published | Probably not | Probably not |
| IKEA KALLAX 2x4 box (59 in long) | Yes, back seats folded | Yes | Yes |
| Folding transport chair | Yes, back seats up | Yes | Yes |
| Standard folding wheelchair | Yes, lying on its side | Yes | Yes |
| Rollator walker | Yes, lying down | Yes | Yes |
Does a queen mattress fit in a RAV4?
So no, a regular queen mattress doesn't fit inside any RAV4. A queen is 60 by 80 inches. The RAV4's floor is 39.4 inches between the wheel wells and about 67 to 78 inches long with the seats folded. And a queen can't go in on its edge either, because 60 inches is much taller than the 32-inch opening.
But a boxed "mattress in a box" fits easily. For example, a Nectar Classic memory foam queen is $699 on Nectar's site (checked Oct 15, 2026). Nectar's memory foam queens ship in an 18 x 18 x 45 inch box that weighs 83 to 97 pounds. Nectar's hybrid queens ship in a longer 15 x 15 x 64 inch box, about 113 pounds for the Luxe Hybrid.
Now the 45-inch box is longer than the 40 inches of floor behind the back seat. So fold the 40 side of the back seat, or lay the box diagonally. The 64-inch box needs both back seats folded. Something to note is that the weight is a bigger problem than the size. A 100-pound box lifted 28 inches up is a two-person job.
How to carry a queen mattress on a RAV4's roof
So a regular queen mattress has to ride on crossbars on the roof. Toyota's limit is 176.4 pounds (80 kg) on the roof of every 2019 to 2026 RAV4, including the crossbars. Toyota's 2026 manual (page 197) also says to:
- Spread the weight between the front and back of the car.
- Never let long or wide cargo stick out past the car's length or width.
- Check the load is tight before you drive.
- Avoid high speeds, sudden starts, sharp turns and hard braking, because a roof load raises the car's center of gravity.
Keep in mind that not every RAV4 has roof rails. Toyota's 2025 SourceBook lists no roof rails on the 2025 gas LE. The Hybrid LE, XLE and higher trims get low roof rails, and the Adventure and TRD Off-Road get raised rails with crossbars from the factory. Toyota's Roof Rack Cross Bars (PT278-42192) are $200 list (checked Oct 15, 2026), but they don't fit the Adventure. Crossbar fit by trim is on my roof racks page.
And for strapping, Sleepy Sal, a mattress store owner who says they've strapped over a thousand mattresses, gives these tips in their how-to video. Sleepy Sal shows the tips on a Prius with no roof rack. On a RAV4 with roof rails, lay the mattress on the crossbars.
- Use ratchet straps at least 15 feet long, not bungee cords or string.
- Take off a flexible antenna first.
- Put the quilted side down.
- Center the mattress left to right, keep it off the windshield, and let it hang over the back instead.
Now if you want a mattress to sleep on in your RAV4, that's a different thing, and I cover it in my sleeping in a RAV4 guide.
Does a 65-inch TV fit in a RAV4?
So yes, a 65-inch TV box fits in every RAV4, lying flat with the back seats folded. For example, the Samsung 65" Class Crystal UHD U7900F is $329.99 on Samsung.com, and the 65-inch size is out of stock (checked Oct 15, 2026). The U7900F's box is about 62 x 37 x 6 inches and weighs about 46 pounds.
Basically, 62 inches fits in the 67 to 71 inches of folded floor, and 37 inches fits between the 39.4-inch wheel wells. But the box can't stand up on its long edge, because 37 inches is taller than the 32-inch opening.
Now moving guides usually say to keep a TV upright in its box. A 65-inch box can't stand upright in a RAV4, so if you carry one, here's what I'd do:
- Lay the box flat with the screen side up. The arrow marked "front" or "screen" on the box faces up.
- Put the box on the folded back seats with padding under it.
- Don't put anything on top of the box, and keep the drive short.
Keep in mind lying flat is how RAV4 owners get TVs home, but it isn't risk-free for the screen. So if you'd rather not chance it, paying for delivery is the safer choice.
And a 75-inch TV is tight. One 2022 RAV4 owner fit a 75-inch LG box lying flat, screen side up, with the back seats folded and the front passenger seat slid forward. The first time with the same TV they had to trim a corner off the box. The second time it went in without cutting. That's one owner and one car, and you can watch it below.
Do bikes fit inside a RAV4?
So yes, an adult bike fits inside every RAV4 with the front wheel off, lying down, with both back seats folded. And the ITPrackin video below shows two ways to carry bikes standing up in a 2019 to 2025 RAV4. One uses a board with fork mounts bolted to the cargo area's mounting points. The other drops a board into the spare tire well, which gives a mountain bike enough height to stand with its front wheel off.
But if you're carrying more than one bike, a hitch rack or roof rack is usually easier. I compare those in my RAV4 bike and ski racks guide, including how to fit bikes and a dog.
Does furniture fit in a RAV4?
So flat-pack furniture up to about 5 feet long fits easily. Here are two IKEA boxes as examples, with the sizes from IKEA's own listings:
- The IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, 30 1/8 x 57 5/8 in, is $79.99 (checked Oct 15, 2026). The KALLAX comes in a box 59 x 15 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches that weighs 68 pounds. The KALLAX box fits flat with the back seats folded, in every RAV4.
- The IKEA BILLY bookcase, 31 1/2 x 11 x 79 1/2 in, is $79 (checked Oct 15, 2026). The BILLY comes in a box 81 1/4 x 11 3/4 x 5 inches that weighs 88 pounds. The BILLY box is longer than the folded floor, even with the front seats all the way forward. The only chance is the front passenger seat all the way forward and reclined, with the box angled up toward the dashboard. No one has published a RAV4 test of that.
Now for built furniture, a dresser or nightstand goes in if its shortest side is under about 32 inches, or if it lies on its back. Ross Perry said you could easily get a chest of drawers in a 2024 RAV4 Hybrid. But a 3-seat couch, about 84 inches long, won't fit.
And a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood or drywall won't lie flat in any RAV4, because the floor is only 39.4 inches between the wheel wells. So have the store cut the sheets in half.
Something to note is the weight. Whatever you put in the back counts against the payload on the sticker in the driver's door jamb, which I explain in my RAV4 family size guide. On a 2025 RAV4 the payload is 1,015 to 1,230 pounds depending on trim and drive, like 1,145 pounds on a 2025 RAV4 Hybrid XLE. And Toyota's manual says not to stack cargo higher than the seatbacks when the back seats are up.
Do wheelchairs, transport chairs and rollators fit in a RAV4?
So yes, a folding wheelchair, a transport chair and a rollator all fit in every RAV4. The table below uses Drive Medical's own folded sizes and the RAV4 measurements above.
| Item | Folded size and weight | How it fits in a RAV4 |
|---|---|---|
| Drive Medical Cruiser III wheelchair, 18-inch seat (K318DDA-SF) At Home Depot | 42 x 12 x 35 inches, 36 pounds | The Cruiser III is 35 inches tall folded, which is taller than the 32-inch opening. So it goes in lying on its side. The Cruiser III is 42 inches long, so with the back seats up, lay it diagonally or take the swing-away footrests off to shorten it. And it fits easily with the 40 side folded. |
| Drive Medical Travelite transport chair in a bag (TC005GY) At 1800wheelchair.com | 11 x 10 x 31.5 inches, 20.5 pounds | The Travelite stands up in the cargo area with the back seats up. |
| Drive Medical Nitro rollator (RTL10266) $299.95 at Lindsey Medical Supply, special order, checked Oct 15, 2026 | The Nitro folds side to side, and Drive lists no folded size. Open, the Nitro is 23 inches wide and 27.75 inches long, with the handles at 33.5 to 38.25 inches. It weighs 18 pounds. | The Nitro's lowest handle height is just over the opening height. So lay it down, or set the handles to the lowest setting and tip it back as it goes in. |
Now the back seat doesn't slide, so the space behind the front seats is fixed. A folded walker either goes in the cargo area or on the floor behind a front seat. And with the 60/40 split, you can fold just the 40 side and still keep one back seat for a rider.
Keep in mind the liftover on a 2026 RAV4 is about 28 inches. And if reaching up to close the liftgate is hard, you can set how high the power liftgate opens, which I explain in my power liftgate guide. And getting in and out with sore knees is in my RAV4 comfort and easy access guide.
Power wheelchairs and scooters in a RAV4
So for a power wheelchair or scooter, you need a lift. One installer, BLVD.com, put a Bruno Joey interior platform lift (VSL-4400) in a RAV4. The Bruno Joey lifts up to 350 pounds and has a 3-year warranty. MobilityWorks lists the Bruno Joey at $5,380 (checked Oct 15, 2026), and its page doesn't say if installation is included.
But the installer said they had to take out the whole back seat in the RAV4, and the video doesn't say which RAV4 year it was. And they said most midsize SUVs get a crane-style lift instead. Bruno's crane-style options are on its SUV scooter lifts page.
Toyota pays up to $1,000 toward adaptive equipment
So the Toyota Mobility Assistance Program reimburses up to $1,000 of the cost to buy and install aftermarket adaptive driving or passenger equipment. Basically, that covers things like a wheelchair or scooter lift on a new Toyota. Here's how it works:
- The car has to be a new Toyota bought or leased from a Toyota dealer. Used cars don't count.
- The equipment has to be installed within 12 months of buying or leasing.
- The form is due within 90 days of the install, and the payment comes 6 to 8 weeks after the paperwork.
- A leased car needs the leasing company's written OK first.
- Factory options and Toyota Accessories don't count.
- Wheelchair and scooter lifts don't need a doctor's note.
For the reimbursement form, you can call the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at (800) 331-4331. And keep in mind Toyota warns that third-party modifications can affect the warranty and Toyota Safety Sense, Toyota's driver assist system.
Videos about what fits in a RAV4 worth watching
Ross Perry measures the cargo area of a UK 2024 RAV4 Hybrid with a tape measure.
- Depth and width: About 39 inches (100 cm) deep at the floor, about 30 to 31 inches (77 to 78 cm) higher up where the back seat leans back, and 39 inches (1 m) wide at the narrowest point.
- Height: 32 inches (81 cm) clear at the lowest point, and about 34 inches (87 cm) with the floor dropped.
- Seats folded: About 67 to 71 inches (170 to 180 cm) to the front seats.
- Ross Perry's verdict: They say you could easily get a chest of drawers in.
An owner buys a 75-inch LG TV at Costco for $629 and loads it into a 2022 RAV4.
- How it went in: Back seats folded, box lying flat, screen side up.
- Screen side: A store worker pointed out that the "front" arrow on the box means the screen.
- Front seats: They slid the front passenger seat forward and drove home with their own seat upright.
- Keep in mind: The first time they bought the same TV they had to trim a box corner. This time it went in without cutting.
ITPrackin shows two ways to carry bikes standing up inside a 2019 to 2025 RAV4.
- Road and gravel bikes: A wood board with fork mounts bolts to the cargo area's three existing mounting points.
- Mountain bikes: A second board sits in the spare tire well, held by the spare tire bolt. That gives full-suspension 29er mountain bikes room to stand with the front wheel off.
- No drilling: Neither setup drills into the car.
- Keep in mind: ITPrackin sells an interior bike rack, so this video is partly an ad.
An installer shows a Bruno Joey platform lift in a RAV4.
- How it works: You drive a power chair or scooter onto the platform from either side, and a hand control lifts it in.
- Capacity: 350 pounds, with a 3-year warranty.
- Keep in mind: They had to take out the whole back seat, and the video doesn't say which RAV4 year it is.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the number to remember is about 32 inches. That's the height of the RAV4's liftgate opening, and anything taller has to lie down.
With the back seats folded, a RAV4 takes a 65-inch TV box lying flat, a boxed foam mattress and bikes with the front wheel off. Flat-pack furniture up to about 5 feet long goes in too, and so do a folding wheelchair, a transport chair and a rollator. But a regular queen mattress goes on the roof, and a BILLY bookcase box is a job for a truck or delivery. And 4 x 8 sheets of plywood go in once the store cuts them in half.
So hopefully this helps you figure out whether to bring the RAV4 or rent a truck.
