So the Corolla Cross Hybrid and the RAV4 Hybrid sit side by side on the same Toyota lot, and the question is always the same. Is the RAV4 Hybrid's extra room worth about $1,900 to $3,500 more? And for a lot of people it comes down to something specific. Will a rear-facing car seat fit with a parent up front? Will a walker or a stroller go in the back? Or will you just be paying for space you never use? So in this guide I'll go through what you actually get for the extra money, new and used.
Quick picks
RAV4 Hybrid vs Corolla Cross Hybrid side by side (2026 and 2027)
So here's the short version in one table. Prices are MSRP, which is Toyota's suggested price, before the delivery fee. I explain each row further down.
| What you're comparing | 2026 RAV4 Hybrid | 2026 and 2027 Corolla Cross Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest with AWD | LE AWD, $33,300 (toyota.com, Oct 15, 2026) | 2026 Hybrid S, $29,795 (toyota.com, Oct 15, 2026). 2027 Hybrid SE, $31,415 (Toyota price list, Oct 2, 2026). |

RAV4 Hybrid vs Corolla Cross Hybrid price by trim
So here are the 2026 prices side by side. These are MSRP before delivery, from toyota.com on October 15, 2026. And keep in mind the delivery fee is the same $1,595 on both, so the gap you see here is the real gap.
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid trim | Front-wheel drive | AWD | 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid trim (AWD only) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RAV4 Hybrid LE | $31,900 | $33,300 | Corolla Cross Hybrid S | $29,795 |
| RAV4 Hybrid SE | $34,700 | $36,100 | Corolla Cross Hybrid SE | $31,115 |
| RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium | $36,100 | $37,500 | Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE | $33,830 |
| RAV4 Hybrid Woodland | Not offered | $39,900 | ||
| RAV4 Hybrid XSE | Not offered | $41,300 | ||
| RAV4 Hybrid Limited | Not offered | $43,300 |
So with AWD on both, the cheapest 2026 RAV4 Hybrid is $3,505 more than the cheapest 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid. That's the RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD against the Corolla Cross Hybrid S. And if you go with a front-wheel drive RAV4 Hybrid LE, the gap drops to $2,105, but then only the Corolla Cross Hybrid has AWD.
Now Toyota has already announced the 2027 Corolla Cross Hybrid, and the 2027 drops the S. So the 2027 comes as the Hybrid SE at $31,415 and the Hybrid XSE at $34,130, from Toyota's price list dated October 2, 2026. That's $300 more than the 2026 SE and XSE. So against a 2027 Corolla Cross Hybrid SE, the RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD is only $1,885 more. Toyota hasn't announced a 2027 RAV4.
And something to note is that Toyota raised the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid's prices twice during the year, by $800 in total. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid's prices haven't changed since launch.
Where a Corolla Cross Hybrid costs more than a RAV4 Hybrid
So here's the part a lot of shoppers miss. The 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE at $33,830 is $530 more than a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD at $33,300. The XSE gets heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a power driver's seat and parking sensors that the RAV4 Hybrid LE doesn't have. But the RAV4 Hybrid LE gets the bigger body, a spare tire and dual-zone climate.
And once you add options, the price climbs fast. Jalopnik's Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE test car came to $37,449 with delivery (June 25, 2026). CarGurus' XSE came to about $38,000 (December 29, 2025). That's RAV4 Hybrid SE or XLE Premium money. So if you're looking at a loaded Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE, I'd drive a RAV4 Hybrid SE first. Brian Makse, who reviewed the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid, gives the same advice. Buy the SE and skip the XSE's options.
What people actually pay
So for the RAV4 Hybrid, I go through what to pay and when to walk away in my guide to 2026 RAV4 dealer markups. For the Corolla Cross Hybrid, there isn't enough buyer data to say what's normal.
How much bigger the RAV4 Hybrid is
So from the outside, the RAV4 Hybrid is only a little bigger. But inside, the Corolla Cross Hybrid gives up most of its room in the back seat. Here are Toyota's numbers for the 2026 models.
| Measurement | 2026 RAV4 Hybrid | 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 181.0 in | 176.8 in |
| Width | 73.0 in | 71.9 in |
| Height | 66.5 in | 64.9 in |
| Ground clearance | 8.1 in (8.5 on the Woodland) | 8.0 in |
| Front legroom | 41.0 in | 42.9 in |
| Rear legroom | 37.8 in | 32.0 in |
| Rear shoulder room | 56.4 in | 52.4 in |
| Rear hip room | 49.6 in | 43.8 in |
| Gas tank | 14.5 gal | 10.6 gal |
So up front, the Corolla Cross Hybrid actually lists more legroom, and a driver alone won't feel much difference. The back seat is where the difference shows. And for headroom, Toyota lists the Corolla Cross Hybrid at 38.6 inches up front without a moonroof, and 39.5 inches with one. The RAV4 has a little less, and I go through those numbers in my RAV4 comfort and access guide. Brian Makse calls the Corolla Cross Hybrid "a lifted hatchback" more than a small SUV. The 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid also has 37.8 inches of rear legroom, and the 2023 to 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid also has 32.0.
Back seat room and car seats
So this is the biggest difference between the two. The RAV4 Hybrid has 5.8 more inches of rear legroom, 4.0 more inches of rear shoulder room and 5.8 more inches of rear hip room.
And reviewers who sat back there noticed. TFLnow's tall host sat behind their own driving position in a 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid and said "my legs are hitting the seat." Jalopnik called the rear seats tight. And South Tahoe Now said the Corolla Cross Hybrid's back seat may suit kids, but adults are unlikely to enjoy it. They called the RAV4 Hybrid's back seat "comparatively spacious."
Car seat grades from Cars.com
So Cars.com's Car Seat Check installs real car seats with a 6-foot driver and a shorter front passenger, then grades how well each seat fits. LATCH is the set of anchors in the seat crease that a car seat clips onto.
| Car tested | LATCH anchors | Infant seat | Rear-facing convertible | Forward-facing convertible | Booster | Front passenger |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid (April 2026) | A | D | D | B | B | A 5-foot-6 passenger had to move the seat very far forward, with knees pressed against the glove box |
| 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid (September 2025) | A | D | D | B | B | A 5-foot-6 passenger had knees against the glove box with the infant seat |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD (April 2026) | A | B | B | B | B | A 5-foot-8 passenger "needed a bit more legroom" |
| 2025 RAV4 Hybrid (April 2025) | A | A | A | B | C | A 5-foot-6 passenger was fine after moving up about an inch |
Keep in mind Cars.com used different rear-facing seats on some of these checks, so the grades aren't a perfect match. On the Corolla Cross Hybrid it was the Graco Contender 65, which Graco's US site no longer lists, so it may be discontinued. On the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid it was the Graco Extend2Fit ($239.99 at Graco, checked October 15, 2026). But two Cars.com checks in a row gave the Corolla Cross Hybrid D's for infant and rear-facing seats, and that's a clear signal. Cars.com also found the Corolla Cross Hybrid's top tether anchor buried in the seatback fabric, so the anchor is easy to miss.
So ultimately, if you've got a baby coming or a rear-facing seat now, the RAV4 Hybrid is the one I'd get. Neither the RAV4 Hybrid nor the Corolla Cross Hybrid fits three car seats across, and I go through those options in my guide to three car seats in a RAV4. And for how to install a car seat in a RAV4, see my RAV4 car seat install guide. My RAV4 family size guide covers when a family needs something bigger than a RAV4.
Now the Corolla Cross Hybrid does have a few nice touches back there. Every Corolla Cross Hybrid trim has rear air vents. The SE and XSE add two rear USB-C ports, and the XSE adds a fold-down armrest with cupholders. And the Corolla Cross Hybrid has nine airbags, including side airbags for the back seat, while the 2026 RAV4 lists eight.
Getting in and out, and the front passenger seat
So if you're buying for a parent or spouse who rides up front, the passenger seat matters a lot. Every Corolla Cross Hybrid has a 4-way manual passenger seat, even the XSE. Basically, 4-way means it slides forward and back and reclines, but it doesn't go up or down. And every 2026 RAV4 has a passenger seat that raises and lowers. That's a 6-way manual seat on the LE through Woodland, and an 8-way power seat on the XSE and Limited.
Keep in mind the passenger seat that raises is only on the 2026 RAV4. No 2019 to 2025 RAV4 passenger seat raises or lowers either, except possibly the 2022 to 2025 Limited, where Toyota's spec books disagree. So on a used Limited, look for a height switch on the passenger seat.
Now as for how high you sit, the RAV4 Hybrid and the Corolla Cross Hybrid sit at about the same height. The ground clearance is 8.1 inches on the RAV4 Hybrid and 8.0 on the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Brian Makse said the Corolla Cross Hybrid's "hip point is perfect for getting in and out." I go through seat height and getting in and out of each RAV4 in my RAV4 comfort and access guide. So I'd bring the person who'll ride up front and have them try both at the dealer.
And there are a couple more things that matter for everyday use. A power liftgate on the Corolla Cross Hybrid only comes on the XSE with the Convenience Package. On the 2026 RAV4, a power liftgate is standard on the XLE Premium and up, and available on the SE. And the Corolla Cross Hybrid keeps physical dials for temperature and fan speed, while the 2026 RAV4 moved some climate controls to the screen. I cover that change in my 2026 vs 2025 RAV4 guide.
Cargo space
| Model and years | Behind the back seat | Back seat folded |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid | 37.8 cu ft (36.6 on the Limited) | About 70 cu ft |
| 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | 37.5 cu ft | 69.8 cu ft |
| 2023 to 2027 Corolla Cross Hybrid | 21.5 cu ft | About 44 cu ft (Kelley Blue Book. Toyota doesn't publish a folded number for the hybrid.) |
So behind the back seat, the RAV4 Hybrid has about 16 more cubic feet, which is roughly 75% more. CarGurus called the Corolla Cross Hybrid's cargo area "one of the smallest cargo holds that you can buy in the class." And Brian Makse said the Corolla Cross Hybrid's cargo area is nearly the same as a Civic hatchback's.
And the gas Corolla Cross has more cargo room than the hybrid. So if you read a bigger number for the Corolla Cross online, it's probably the gas model. I go through what fits in a RAV4, like strollers and suitcases, in my RAV4 family size guide.
The spare tire
So every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 Hybrid comes with a temporary spare tire on every trim. And the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited with 20-inch wheels gets a bigger spare.
But no Corolla Cross Hybrid has a spare tire. Every Corolla Cross Hybrid trim comes with a tire repair kit instead. Basically, the repair kit is meant to get you going again after a small puncture, and TFLnow describes it as an inflation kit. Brian Makse suggests two fixes. You can get a used spare from a junkyard for about $50 to $100, and trim Toyota's foam tray so it fits. Or you can buy an aftermarket spare kit for about $300 to $400. Those are Brian Makse's figures.
So ultimately, if you drive rural roads or long highway trips, I'd put a lot of weight on having a real spare tire.
MPG: the same on a 2026
So this surprises a lot of people. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE and SE with AWD are rated exactly the same as the Corolla Cross Hybrid, at 46 city, 39 highway and 42 combined. These are EPA ratings. The EPA is the Environmental Protection Agency, and combined means a mix of city and highway driving.
| Model and years | City / highway / combined |
|---|---|
| 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid, every trim (the 2027 is the same) | 46 / 39 / 42 |
| 2023 to 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid | 45 / 38 / 42 |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE and SE with AWD | 46 / 39 / 42 |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE, SE and XLE Premium with front-wheel drive | 47 / 40 / 43 |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium with AWD | 45 / 38 / 41 |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XSE and Limited | 43 / 37 / 41 |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Woodland | 41 / 35 / 38 |
| 2019 to 2023 RAV4 Hybrid | 41 / 38 / 40 |
| 2024 and 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | 39 combined |
So the Corolla Cross Hybrid only beats the RAV4 Hybrid on mpg in two cases. The Corolla Cross Hybrid beats the older 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid by 2 to 3 mpg combined. And the Corolla Cross Hybrid beats the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium AWD, XSE, Limited and Woodland by 1 to 4 mpg combined.
Now real-world numbers vary a lot by how you drive. Consumer Reports got 41 mpg overall in the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid and 40 in the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium AWD. TFLnow got about 44 to 45 mpg in a 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid on country roads at about 55 mph. And Brian Makse got 36 mpg in mostly highway driving in a 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid, and says winter drops it to 35 to 38. Reviewers say the highway is where the Corolla Cross Hybrid's mpg drops the most. And nobody has tested the RAV4 Hybrid and the Corolla Cross Hybrid on the same day.
Range per tank
So here's where the RAV4 Hybrid's bigger tank helps. At 42 mpg combined, the Corolla Cross Hybrid's 10.6-gallon tank gets you about 445 miles. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD's 14.5-gallon tank gets you about 609 miles. So if you drive 50,000 miles a year, the Corolla Cross Hybrid needs about 30 more fill-ups a year than the RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD. That's one extra stop for gas about every other week.
What the mpg gap costs you each year
So here's my own math at $4.00 a gallon, for a 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid against each RAV4 Hybrid.
- Against a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE or SE AWD (42 vs 42 mpg): The two cost the same to fuel, so there's no difference.
- Against a 2019 to 2023 RAV4 Hybrid (42 vs 40 mpg): The Corolla Cross Hybrid saves about $57 a year at 12,000 miles, $119 at 25,000 miles and $238 at 50,000 miles.
- Against a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XSE or Limited (42 vs 41 mpg): The Corolla Cross Hybrid saves about $28 a year at 12,000 miles.
So the gas savings never pay back the price gap either way. Basically, this decision is about room, not gas.
Power, acceleration and towing
So the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid makes 226 horsepower with front-wheel drive and 236 with AWD. The 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid makes 219. Every Corolla Cross Hybrid makes 196 horsepower from a 2.0-liter engine and electric motors.
But on paper the gap is smaller than it looks. Consumer Reports timed the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid and the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium at the same 7.7 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. Where the RAV4 Hybrid's extra power shows is on the highway with passengers and cargo. CarGurus said that with the Corolla Cross Hybrid, "you can never escape the noise" of the engine. And South Tahoe Now said the RAV4 Hybrid has more power with "no real detriment to fuel economy."
| Model and years | Towing rating |
|---|---|
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid SE, XLE Premium, XSE, Woodland and Limited with AWD | 3,500 lb |
| 2026 RAV4 Hybrid with front-wheel drive, and the LE with AWD | 1,750 lb |
| 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | 1,750 lb |
| 2023 to 2027 Corolla Cross Hybrid | 1,500 lb with Toyota's accessory tow hitch |
So if you want to tow anything over 1,500 pounds, that's a job for the RAV4 Hybrid. I go through RAV4 towing by year and trim in my RAV4 towing guide.
How the AWD works on both
So the RAV4 Hybrid and the Corolla Cross Hybrid do AWD the same basic way. There's no driveshaft to the back. The engine and front motor drive the front wheels, and a separate electric motor drives the rear wheels when needed. Toyota calls it Electronic On-Demand AWD on the Corolla Cross Hybrid.
And the ground clearance is about the same, 8.1 inches against 8.0. Nobody has tested the RAV4 Hybrid and the Corolla Cross Hybrid in snow side by side. So what I can tell you is that tires matter more than either AWD system. I explain how the RAV4 Hybrid's AWD works in my RAV4 AWD guide and my guide to the RAV4 in snow. And my snow tires guide covers which tires to get.
Ride, noise and how they drive
So reviewers mostly agree the Corolla Cross Hybrid is easy and comfortable around town and on country roads. TFLnow found the Corolla Cross Hybrid "very comfortable" and "very quiet and refined on the road." CarGurus rated the ride good and the handling really good. And Brian Makse liked the seats on long drives.
But at highway speed, the Corolla Cross Hybrid gets louder. Jalopnik said the Corolla Cross Hybrid let a lot of noise in at highway speed. South Tahoe Now said the RAV4 Hybrid has better steering feel and a more balanced ride. Nobody has measured the noise of both on the same day, so I'd drive both on a highway you know.
What each 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid trim gets
- Corolla Cross Hybrid S ($29,795): The S has an 8-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 7-inch digital gauge cluster. It has cloth seats and single-zone automatic climate with rear vents. The S also gets Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Basically, that's Toyota's set of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, lane centering and automatic emergency braking. But keep in mind the S has no blind spot monitor.
- Corolla Cross Hybrid SE ($31,115): The SE adds a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. It also adds a leather-trimmed steering wheel, roof rails, a wireless phone charger and two rear USB-C ports. The 10.5-inch screen, heated front seats and a moonroof are options on the SE.
- Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE ($33,830): The XSE adds the 10.5-inch screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10-way power driver's seat with lumbar support. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate are standard on the XSE. It also gets front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking, fog lights and SofTex seats, which is Toyota's synthetic leather.
And no Corolla Cross Hybrid offers a spare tire, ventilated seats, heated rear seats, a 360-degree camera or a power passenger seat. The Corolla Cross Hybrid also never offers a head-up display, a built-in dash cam, a panoramic roof or a memory seat. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid has a spare on every trim. And the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid XSE and Limited add ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera, a head-up display and a power passenger seat. Every 2026 RAV4 Hybrid also has the 12.3-inch gauge cluster and dual-zone climate. I go through what each RAV4 trim gets in my 2026 RAV4 trims guide.
Safety ratings
So the 2025 and 2026 Corolla Cross carry an IIHS Top Safety Pick from the 2025 awards, and no 2025 or 2026 RAV4 has one. The IIHS is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which crash tests cars and gives out these awards each year. The IIHS hasn't tested the 2026 RAV4 yet, so it has no rating so far.
| Rating | Corolla Cross | RAV4 (2019 to 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| IIHS small overlap front | Good | Good |
| IIHS updated moderate overlap, with a dummy in the back seat | Acceptable (2023 to 2026) | Marginal |
| IIHS updated side test | Good (2025 and 2026), Acceptable (2023 and 2024) | Acceptable |
| IIHS headlights | Acceptable (2026), Good or Acceptable by trim (2025) | Good on all trims in recent years |
| IIHS LATCH ease of use | Good+ | Good+ |
| NHTSA overall stars | 5 stars (2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid). 2023 and 2024 have no overall rating, and 2026 isn't listed. | 5 stars (2019 to 2024 RAV4 Hybrid). 2025 and 2026 not rated. |
Keep in mind the IIHS rates the gas and hybrid Corolla Cross together, and its test cars were gas models. NHTSA is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which does the government's 5-star ratings.
So ultimately, on paper the Corolla Cross did a little better than the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 in the IIHS's newer tests. But safety isn't a reason to skip either one. The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid both have Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and a Rear Seat Reminder. For parents, the car seat fit is the bigger difference.
Reliability and recalls
So Consumer Reports predicts the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid's reliability will be about average compared with other new cars. And it predicts the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid will be more reliable than the average new car. Every 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid also gets a Consumer Reports verdict of more reliable or much more reliable than average. I go into the RAV4's record in my RAV4 reliability guide.
Here are the Corolla Cross Hybrid's recalls from NHTSA, checked October 15, 2026.
| Corolla Cross Hybrid years | Problem | Recall |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | A weld in the steering column cable can separate and turn off the driver's airbag | 23V480, and 25V040 for cars fixed wrong the first time |
| 2023 and 2024 | A software error can cause loss of power brake assist when turning a corner | 24V708 |
| 2023 to 2025 | The pedestrian warning sound may be too quiet in reverse | 26V203 |
| 2026 | An inverter bolt may not be tight, which can cause loss of drive power or an electrical short | 25V869 |
Owner reports for the Corolla Cross Hybrid are few, and the one that comes up more than once is highway road noise. For the RAV4 Hybrid, the main things to check are the rear motor cable on 2019 to 2024 models and the gas tank on 2019 and 2020 models. I go through those in my guide to RAV4 years to avoid. So for either one, I'd run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.
Warranty and resale
So since both are Toyotas, the warranty is the same. Basic coverage is 3 years or 36,000 miles, and the powertrain is 5 years or 60,000 miles. The hybrid parts are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Both also get ToyotaCare, which is free scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles. I go into the details in my guides to Toyota's extended warranty and RAV4 Hybrid battery life.
And the RAV4 Hybrid holds its value a little better. iSeeCars puts 5-year depreciation at 34.8% for the Corolla Cross Hybrid and about 30% for the RAV4 Hybrid. So when you sell, you get back part of the price gap. The Corolla Cross Hybrid has only been around since 2023, so its long-term record is still short.
Used: 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid vs 2023 to 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid
So the Corolla Cross Hybrid only goes back to 2023. Every used Corolla Cross Hybrid and every 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid has AWD. And here's where the Corolla Cross Hybrid does win on mpg, at 42 combined against 39 to 40 for the RAV4 Hybrid.
| Years | What you get | What to check before you buy |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid | AWD, 39 to 40 mpg combined, 37.8 in of rear legroom, 37.5 cu ft behind the back seat, a spare tire, 1,750 lb towing | The rear motor cable fix on 2019 to 2024, and the gas tank fix on 2019 and 2020 |
| 2023 to 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid | AWD, 42 mpg combined, 32.0 in of rear legroom, 21.5 cu ft behind the back seat, a repair kit, 1,500 lb towing | The brake assist recall on 2023 and 2024, the airbag recall on 2023, and the reverse sound recall on 2023 to 2025 |
When new, the cheapest Corolla Cross Hybrid cost $2,255 less than the cheapest RAV4 Hybrid in 2023, $3,755 less in 2024 and $3,505 less in 2025. Those are MSRP from Toyota's price lists. And iSeeCars lists a used 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid at $33,748 on average, against $38,285 for a used 2025 RAV4 Hybrid (read October 15, 2026).
And keep in mind the Corolla Cross only got the better side crash rating starting with the 2025 model. So if you're buying a used Corolla Cross Hybrid, a 2025 is the one I'd look for. And for a used RAV4 Hybrid, my RAV4 years to avoid guide goes through each year.
Who each one suits
So even though the RAV4 Hybrid has a lot more room, there are good reasons to pick the Corolla Cross Hybrid.
- First, if it's just you, or you and a spouse up front, then the Corolla Cross Hybrid's small back seat won't matter. And the Corolla Cross Hybrid's front seat actually has more legroom.
- Next, if you mostly drive in town and park in tight spots, then the Corolla Cross Hybrid is 4.2 inches shorter. And the Corolla Cross Hybrid gets the same 42 mpg as a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD.
- And finally, if you want the lowest price of these two with AWD, then the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid S starts at $29,795.
But otherwise, the RAV4 Hybrid would be my pick.
- If you have a rear-facing car seat or two kids, the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE got B's for infant and rear-facing seats in Cars.com's checks, where the Corolla Cross Hybrid got D's.
- If adults ride in the back, the RAV4 Hybrid has 5.8 more inches of rear legroom.
- If you carry a stroller, a walker, a dog or camping gear, the RAV4 Hybrid has about 75% more cargo space behind the back seat.
- If you drive long highway trips or rural roads, the RAV4 Hybrid has a bigger tank, more power with a load and a real spare tire.
- If your front passenger needs to raise the seat, every 2026 RAV4 passenger seat goes up and down.
And if you're also looking at a Honda, I compare the RAV4 Hybrid against the CR-V Hybrid in my RAV4 Hybrid vs CR-V Hybrid guide.
Videos worth watching on the Corolla Cross Hybrid
CarGurus drives a 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE with options, at about $38,000. The CarGurus video is the most complete review of the 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid.
- Cargo: CarGurus gives 21.5 cubic feet behind the back seat and 44 folded, and calls the cargo area "one of the smallest cargo holds" in the class.
- Power and noise: The Corolla Cross Hybrid is much quicker than the gas Corolla Cross, but "you can never escape the noise" of the engine.
- Passenger seat: CarGurus points out the passenger seat is still manual, even on the XSE.
- Their pick: At this price, the host "would go one step up to the RAV4."
Brian Makse drives a 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrid SE and explains who the Corolla Cross Hybrid is really for.
- What it is: Brian Makse says to think of the Corolla Cross Hybrid as a lifted Corolla hatchback, not a CR-V rival, with cargo about the same as a Civic hatchback.
- No spare: Brian Makse points out the Corolla Cross Hybrid only has a fix-a-flat kit, and suggests a junkyard spare or an aftermarket spare kit.
- Mileage: Brian Makse got 36 mpg in the SE in mostly highway driving, and says winter drops the Corolla Cross Hybrid to 35 to 38 mpg.
- Brian Makse's pick: Buy the SE, because a loaded XSE puts you "in RAV4 price territory."
- One correction: Brian Makse says the XSE has heated rear seats, but Toyota's spec sheet doesn't list them.
This video is for used shoppers. TFLnow drives a 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid Nightshade, at about $34,000 as equipped.
- Mileage: They got about 44 to 45 mpg on a 45-mile loop of country roads at about 55 mph.
- The catch: There's no spare tire, only an inflation kit.
- Back seat: The tall host sits behind their own driving position and says "my legs are hitting the seat."
- Who it suits: TFLnow found the Corolla Cross Hybrid comfortable, quiet and refined, and a good fit for grads, small families and empty nesters.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, if you've got a car seat, adults in the back, a stroller or a walker, I'd get the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid. The extra $1,900 to $3,500 buys a lot more back seat, a lot more cargo space and a real spare tire. And on a 2026 LE or SE with AWD, you give up nothing on mpg.
But if it's mostly one or two of you in town, the 2026 or 2027 Corolla Cross Hybrid SE would be my pick. Just don't load up a Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE, because then you're paying RAV4 money for the smaller car.
For used, a 2023 to 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid gets better mpg than a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid. But the used Corolla Cross Hybrid has the same small back seat and cargo area as the new one.
So hopefully this helps you decide between the two Toyotas.
