On a 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid, the LE is the only trim with no USB ports for the back seat. And only the Limited can get heated back seats, through its Weather Package. Every 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime has rear USB ports and a power liftgate.
On a 2026 RAV4, every trim except the Hybrid LE has rear USB-C ports, and only the Hybrid Limited has heated back seats. Every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has child locks on the back doors and a window lock switch. And every RAV4 has back seat air vents except the 2019 to 2021 gas LE. So past that one trim, a family doesn't need a higher trim for back seat vents or child locks.
Quick picks
So if you're asking which RAV4 trim has rear AC vents, USB ports for the kids, sunshades and washable seats, the trim names won't tell you. And Toyota spreads those features across the trims in a way that isn't obvious. So here's every family feature by trim, then how to kid-proof the back seat once you've bought the RAV4.
What every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has for kids, whatever the trim
So the good news is a lot of the family basics come standard. You don't have to pay for a higher trim to get any of these.
- Back seat air vents come on every RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime, and on every 2022 to 2026 RAV4. The one exception is the 2019 to 2021 gas LE, which has no back seat vents. The gas LE has single-zone climate control, and every other trim has dual-zone. Basically, single-zone is one temperature for the whole RAV4, and dual-zone lets the driver and front passenger each pick their own. But on a 2022 to 2025 gas LE, single-zone still has the back seat vents.
- Child locks on both back doors come on every 2019 to 2026 RAV4. I explain how to use the child locks below.
- A window lock switch on the driver's door comes on every 2019 to 2026 RAV4, and I explain the window lock below.
- Power windows with jam protection come at every seat on every 2025 trim. Basically, jam protection means the window stops and backs off if a hand or arm is in the way while the window is going up.
- Privacy glass comes on every 2025 trim. That's the darker tinted glass on the back side windows, the small windows behind the back doors and the liftgate window.
- A 60/40 split back seat that reclines, with a fold-down armrest and cup holders, comes on every 2025 trim. The recline matters for car seats, and my RAV4 car seat install guide explains how to set the seatback angle.
- A seatback pocket behind the front passenger comes on every 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. But there's no pocket on the back of the driver's seat, so a child sitting behind the driver has nowhere to keep things. The 2025 Prime XSE is the one that adds a driver's seatback pocket.
- A rear seat reminder comes on 2022 and later RAV4s, and it's standard on every 2026. My RAV4 beeps guide explains how the rear seat reminder works and how to turn the reminder off.
And something to note is the car seat anchors are the same on every 2020 to 2025 trim. The lower anchors are on the two outer back seats, and there's a top tether anchor behind all three back seats. So no trim fits a car seat better than another. My three car seats in a RAV4 guide covers fitting car seats side by side.
2019 to 2025 RAV4 family features by trim, gas and Hybrid
So here's where the trims actually differ for a family.
| Trim | USB ports for the back seat | Seats | Power liftgate | Heated back seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LE, gas and Hybrid | None. The 2019 to 2021 LE has one USB port, up front. The 2022 to 2025 LE has three, all up front. | Fabric | No, not even as an option | No |
| XLE, gas and Hybrid | Two | Fabric | In the Convenience Package | No |
| XLE Premium, gas, and Hybrid from 2021 | Two | SofTex | Standard | No |
| Hybrid SE, 2022 to 2025 | Two | Fabric with blue stitching | In the Convenience Package | No |
| Hybrid XSE | Two | SofTex with fabric inserts | Standard | No |
| Woodland, Hybrid, 2023 to 2025 | Two | Fabric | No, not even as an option | No |
| Adventure, gas, 2019 to 2023, and TRD Off-Road, gas, 2020 to 2024 | Two | SofTex | Adventure: in a package. TRD Off-Road: standard. | No |
| Limited, gas and Hybrid | Two | SofTex | Standard | Only in the Limited's Weather Package |
USB ports for the back seat
So on the XLE and every trim above the XLE, the two back seat USB ports are on the back of the center console, between the front seats. Those two are on top of the USB ports up front, for five USB ports in all. The 2019 RAV4 split the same way, with just one USB port on the LE and five on the XLE and up.
Now the LE does have one thing the other trims don't, which is a 12-volt outlet in the back seat. Basically, a 12-volt outlet is the round socket that used to hold a cigarette lighter. On the XLE and up, that second 12-volt outlet is in the cargo area instead. So if you already have an LE, a plug-in 12-volt USB adapter in the back seat outlet gives the kids a place to charge.
If you'd also like a regular household plug, my RAV4 power outlet guide covers which RAV4s have one.
Power liftgate
So a power liftgate opens and closes the back hatch with a button. That helps when you're holding a baby in one arm and a diaper bag in the other. On the XLE and the Hybrid SE, the power liftgate comes in the Convenience Package, so a used XLE or SE may or may not have the power liftgate. My RAV4 power liftgate guide covers the buttons and how to set how high the liftgate opens.
Heated back seats on the 2019 to 2025 Limited
So on a 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid, the Limited is the only trim that can have heated back seats. And the heated back seats only come in the Limited's Weather Package.
- The 2020 Limited Weather Package was $1,015. The 2020 package added a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outer back seats and rain-sensing wipers.
- The 2022 to 2025 Limited Weather Package was $815. The 2022 to 2025 package added a heated steering wheel, heated outer back seats and rain-sensing wipers.
Keep in mind only the two outer back seats get heat, not the middle seat. And the 2025 Hybrid XSE's Weather Package, at $375, doesn't include heated back seats at all. So on a used Limited, check the window sticker, or check whether the back seats have heat switches, because the Weather Package was optional.
RAV4 Prime family features, 2021 to 2025
So the RAV4 Prime, which Toyota called the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2025, is the one RAV4 where even the cheaper trim has most of the family features. Every 2021 to 2025 Prime, SE and XSE, comes standard with back seat air vents, two USB ports for the back seat, heated front seats and a power liftgate.
- Prime SE: The seats are fabric with red stitching. Heated back seats come in the Weather & Moonroof Package, which was $1,665 in 2021, 2023 and 2025. The Weather & Moonroof Package also adds a heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers and a moonroof.
- Prime XSE: The seats are SofTex with fabric inserts. On the 2025 Prime XSE, the Premium Package makes the seats all SofTex. On the 2021 Prime XSE, heated back seats were a separate $440 option. On the 2023 to 2025 Prime XSE, heated back seats come in the Premium Package, which was $2,585 in 2023 and 2025.
Now the trade-off is the Prime has a little less cargo space behind the back seat. My RAV4 family size guide has the numbers.
The 2026 RAV4's family features in short
So I cover every 2026 trim in my 2026 RAV4 trims guide. Here's just the family part. Prices are Toyota's, before the destination fee, checked Oct 15, 2026.
- Every 2026 trim has back seat air vents, the Hybrid LE included.
- Every 2026 trim except the Hybrid LE has two USB-C ports for the back seat. The Hybrid SE, from $34,700 with FWD, is the cheapest 2026 RAV4 with back seat USB-C ports.
- The 2026 XLE Premium is the cheapest trim with SofTex seats and a standard power liftgate. On the 2026 SE, the power liftgate comes in the $400 Convenience Package.
- Only the 2026 Hybrid Limited, at $43,300, has heated back seats.
And my 2026 trim picks land on the XLE Premium for kids in car seats too.
Which RAV4 trims have wipe-clean seats, and how to clean up spills
So SofTex is Toyota's synthetic leather. Basically, SofTex looks like leather and wipes clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, which is what most parents mean by washable. On the 2019 to 2025 RAV4, these trims have SofTex:
- The XLE Premium, Hybrid XSE, Limited, Adventure and TRD Off-Road.
- The Prime XSE.
And the LE, XLE, Hybrid SE, Woodland and Prime SE have fabric seats. Fabric cleans the same way, but stains and smells hang on longer. So with fabric seats, a seat cover on the seats without a car seat is the usual fix. For under a car seat, see what each car seat maker allows. And if you'd rather have leather, my RAV4 leather seats guide covers adding leather to fabric seats.
How Toyota says to clean RAV4 seats and carpets
- Vacuum the seat first.
- On a fabric seat, wipe the seat with a cloth dampened with lukewarm water.
- If water alone doesn't clean a fabric seat, or if the seat is SofTex, use a mild, neutral detergent. Mix about 1 part detergent to 100 parts water, and wipe the seat with a soft cloth dampened with that mix. Basically, neutral means the detergent isn't strongly alkaline or acidic.
- Wring the cloth out in plain water and wipe off all the detergent and water.
Keep in mind Toyota says never to use thinner, benzene or alcohol on the seats. For the carpets, Toyota says to use a foaming carpet cleaner with a sponge or brush, and not to use water. And for a seat belt that got juice on it, use mild soap and lukewarm water on a cloth or sponge.
Spills and seat covers in a RAV4 Hybrid or Prime
So Toyota's spill warning matters if you have kids with sippy cups. Toyota warns against spilling liquid on the floor, the back seat or the cargo area of a RAV4 Hybrid. Toyota says a spill there can make the hybrid battery or other electrical parts malfunction or catch fire.
On a RAV4 Hybrid, the hybrid battery's air intake vent is under the right side of the back seat. On the 2021 to 2024 RAV4 Prime, the air intake for the DC/DC converter, an electrical part of the Prime's plug-in system, is under the back seat. Toyota says not to block either vent with anything, like a seat cover. So whatever goes on the right side of the back seat, leave the front edge of the seat base clear. My RAV4 Hybrid battery check guide shows why a blocked vent matters.
How to turn on the RAV4's child locks
So the child locks stop a child from opening a back door from the inside. Every 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has one on each back door, and you set each side separately.
- Open one of the back doors.
- Look at the back edge of the back door, the edge that faces the back of the RAV4. You'll see a small black switch with a child and padlock symbol and an arrow pointing down.
- Push the child lock switch down. Now the inside door handle on that back door won't open the door.
- Close the door, and do the same on the other back door.
Keep in mind the child lock doesn't lock the door from the outside, so the outside handle still opens the back door. To turn the child lock off, open the back door and push the switch back up. So if a back door won't open from the inside, the child lock on that door is probably on.
How to use the RAV4's window lock switch
So the window lock switch stops kids from opening or closing the passenger windows. Toyota recommends using the window lock switch any time a child is riding.
- Find the window lock switch on the driver's door, with the window switches.
- Press the window lock switch. The light on the switch comes on, and the passenger window switches stop working.
- Press the window lock switch again to unlock the passenger windows.
And the driver's switches still open and close every window while the window lock is on. Something to note is that if the 12-volt battery is ever disconnected, the window lock switch turns off. So press the window lock switch again after the battery is reconnected.
Now on the 2023 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid, the doors also lock on their own once you reach about 12 mph. That's a setting that can be changed. So along with the child locks, the automatic locking keeps the doors locked while you're driving.
Kick mats for the back of the RAV4's front seats
So a kick mat hangs on the back of a front seat and keeps little shoes off the seatback. Most kick mats have pockets too. That helps behind the driver, since a 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid has no seatback pocket there.
- The Evenflo Car Seat Kick Mat With Storage Pocket was $12.99 on Evenflo's site and in stock on Oct 15, 2026.
Keep in mind that with a rear-facing car seat, the kick mat ends up between the car seat and the front seatback. Some car seat manuals say whether the car seat may touch the front seat. So check your car seat's manual before adding a kick mat behind a rear-facing seat.
Seat protectors under a car seat: what each car seat maker allows
So whether you can put a mat under a car seat is up to the car seat maker, not Toyota. And the safest move is to skip a seat protector if you can, and to avoid protectors with grippy bottoms. Basically, never add anything to make a loose car seat feel tighter.
Here's what each car seat maker allows under its car seats:
| Car seat brand | Seat protector under the car seat |
|---|---|
| Britax | At most the Britax Vehicle Seat Protector, and maybe nothing at all. So check your Britax manual before using any mat. |
| Chicco | No mats at all, and Chicco says Chicco-branded protectors aren't approved either. |
| Clek | Only the Clek Mat-thingy. |
| Diono | Only Diono mats, like the Diono Ultra Mat. |
| Evenflo | The Evenflo Undermat Seat Protector, or a towel. |
| Graco | Mats or a towel are allowed. |
| Nuna | Not recommended, but not banned. |
| UPPAbaby | No. UPPAbaby stopped allowing any mats in 2024. |
| Cybex, Peg-Pérego, gb, Orbit Baby and Harmony | No. |
| Cosco, Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st | A single layer of towel only. |
Each brand name in the table links to that brand's car seats. The Diono link goes to Diono's Amazon store, because diono.com sends you there. And gb's US site only lists strollers, so the gb link goes to gb's US home page.
Keep in mind car seat makers change these rules, like UPPAbaby did in 2024. So your own car seat manual always wins over this table.
Now if your car seat maker does allow one, these are the approved protectors:
- The Clek Mat-thingy was $49.99 on Clek's site and in stock on Oct 15, 2026. The Mat-thingy is for Clek car seats only.
- The Britax Vehicle Seat Protector isn't sold on Britax's US site as of Oct 15, 2026, so this link goes to Britax's US car seat accessories page. Britax's Seat Saver Waterproof Liner on that page goes inside the car seat, so it isn't the same thing.
- The Diono Ultra Mat was $24.99 at Walmart but out of stock on Oct 15, 2026.
- The Evenflo Undermat Seat Protector was out of stock at Walmart on Oct 15, 2026.
And on a RAV4 Hybrid, keep any protector or cover clear of the hybrid battery air intake at the front of the right back seat. I covered that air intake above. If a dog rides on the other side, my RAV4 dog setup guide covers seat covers that leave the car seat buckles reachable.
Sunshades for the RAV4's back windows
So no 2019 to 2026 RAV4 has built-in sunshades for the back windows from the factory. Every trim relies on the factory privacy glass. So if the sun hits the kids, a set of shades made for the RAV4 is the fix.
- The WeatherTech SunShade Full Vehicle Kit for the 2019 and later RAV4 (TS1248K1) was $219.95 at UroTuning and in stock on Oct 15, 2026. The WeatherTech kit is a set of shades cut to fit the RAV4's windows.
- The CLIM ART magnetic side window sunshades for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4, a set of 4, were $99.99 at Walmart, sold by an outside seller, and in stock on Oct 15, 2026. Magnetic shades go on in seconds. But the windows can't be rolled down with the magnetic shades on.
Keep in mind the 2026 RAV4 has a new body. So before ordering shades for a 2026, check that the listing names the 2026.
Which RAV4 trim to pick for your family
- If you're buying a used 2019 to 2025 RAV4 on a tight budget, the XLE, gas or Hybrid, is the cheapest trim with back seat USB ports. Look for one with the Convenience Package if you want the power liftgate. And if you end up with an LE, plan on a 12-volt USB adapter in the back seat outlet.
- If you want wipe-clean seats and a hatch you can open with your hands full, the 2019 to 2025 gas XLE Premium or the 2021 to 2025 Hybrid XLE Premium has SofTex seats, back seat USB ports and a standard power liftgate. There was no Hybrid XLE Premium before 2021, so on a 2019 or 2020 RAV4 Hybrid the next trim up from the XLE is the XSE.
- If you live where winters are cold, the 2019 to 2025 Limited with the Weather Package is the only gas RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid with heated back seats. Check the window sticker on a used Limited, since the Weather Package was optional.
- If you want a plug-in, any 2021 to 2025 Prime has back seat USB ports and a power liftgate. For heated back seats, look for the Weather & Moonroof Package on the SE, or the Premium Package on a 2023 to 2025 XSE.
- If you're buying a new 2026, the Hybrid XLE Premium covers the kid features for the least money. The Hybrid SE is the cheapest with back seat USB-C, and the Hybrid Limited is the one with heated back seats.
Something to note is the 2023 to 2025 Woodland surprises some parents. Some parents assume the Woodland is a step up from the XLE Premium. But the Woodland has fabric seats and no power liftgate, not even as an option. The Woodland still has the same back seat USB ports and air vents as the XLE and up, though.
Videos about RAV4 family features worth watching
A mom of two who's a certified child passenger safety technician tours a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid, then builds a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid on Toyota's site.
- Cleaning: The Car Mom says the hard plastic door panels are a lot easier to clean, and calls the console area a french fry graveyard.
- Car seats: The outer back seats have lower anchors, the headrests come off, and three car seats across didn't work with The Car Mom's own car seats.
- Rear-facing room: At about 6 feet tall, The Car Mom had barely a finger of room in front of a rear-facing seat. And the back door doesn't open very wide for lifting in an infant seat.
- The trim pick: The Car Mom's own build stops at the XLE Premium, with the package that adds heated seats, a heated steering wheel and Apple CarPlay.
A quick look at the child lock switch on a 2021 RAV4's back door.
- Where the switch is: Open the back door and look for the small black switch with a child and padlock symbol and a down arrow.
- Turning the child lock on: Push the switch down, and the inside handle goes slack.
- The outside handle: The outside handle still opens the back door with the child lock on.
- Turning the child lock off: Flick the switch back up.
An Australian car review site for parents picks three family features on a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser, an Australian trim.
- Keyless doors: Keyless door handles mean no digging for the key with your hands full.
- A quiet hybrid: BabyDrive can drive the kids to sleep, then sit with the air conditioning on without using much fuel.
- The 360 camera: BabyDrive likes the camera view all the way around the RAV4.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, the XLE Premium is the trim I'd point most families to, whether you're buying a 2019 to 2025 gas RAV4, a 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid or a 2026 Hybrid. You get back seat USB ports, SofTex seats that wipe clean and a power liftgate, without paying for the Limited.
If you're on a tight budget, a used XLE gets the kids their USB ports. And if you live somewhere cold and want heated back seats, a 2019 to 2025 Limited with the Weather Package, or a 2026 Hybrid Limited, is the one to get.
But whichever trim you pick, turn on the child locks and the window lock the day you bring the RAV4 home. And check your car seat manual before you put anything under the car seat.
So hopefully this helps you find the RAV4 that works for your family without paying for features the kids won't use.
