Leather seats for the RAV4: what you have and how to upgrade

Find out what your seats are made of, then choose between real leather, fitted covers, or simple protection.

No fifth-generation RAV4 came with real leather seats. The "leather" seats on the XLE Premium, Adventure, TRD Off-Road, XSE, and Limited are SofTex, Toyota's synthetic leather. Only the steering wheel is real leather. If you want real leather, or a leather look on a fabric car, you add it afterward. That runs from about $200 for fitted covers to about $2,400 for a professional leather interior.

Step 1: What your seats are made of

From Toyota's brochures for 2021 to 2024. The 2019, 2020, and 2025 cars follow the same pattern as far as we can tell, but we couldn't check a brochure for those years.

XSE HybridSofTex with fabric inserts in the middle of the seat

Cooled front seats also came on the TRD Off-Road with its Weather Package, and on the 2021 Adventure with its Weather Package. That matters below, because a cover over a cooled seat can block the airflow.

Step 2: Pick how far you want to go

Prices are what owners on RAV4World reported paying and retailer listings checked in October 2026. Katzkin's price depends a lot on the installer and the options you pick.

Katzkin: real leather, done by a shop

$1,400 to $2,400

This is how most dealers turn a fabric RAV4 into a leather one. The installer strips off your factory fabric and fits Katzkin's leather in its place, so it looks like it came from Toyota.

  • What owners paid: about $1,400 to $1,800 for front and rear seats on 2019 to 2021 cars. One Prime SE owner paid $2,000 with two-tone perforation. A 2025 quote came in around $2,400. Katzkin's own site now says installed prices start around $2,195.
  • It's real leather where you sit. The sides and backs are usually synthetic, which is normal for most leather seats.
  • Your heated seats still work. The installer moves the factory heaters into the new covers. Front seats get a special seam so the side airbags can still come out.
  • The seat doesn't get softer. It's the same foam underneath, so it'll feel as firm as before.
  • Warranty: one owner was told 3 years on the material and lifetime labor while you own the car.
  • The installer makes or breaks it. One Prime SE owner said the fit was excellent. A 2021 XLE Hybrid owner got wrinkles and loose leather and had to send it back twice. A 2019 LE owner ended up with saggy inserts and Katzkin sent them back to the installer. Ask to see a shop's finished work before you pay.
  • You can have the dealer arrange it before you take delivery and roll it into the price of the car.
  • Roadwire does the same kind of job. A 2019 post mentioned Costco selling it with install for about $1,300, but we couldn't confirm current pricing.

Clazzio: the leather look you can take off

$500 to $900

Clazzio makes fitted covers for the RAV4 that go over your seats and look close to factory. Your original seats stay underneath, so you can take them off when you sell the car.

  • Price: owners report about $500 to $900 for the whole car, depending on vinyl or leather. Several found $100 off coupons.
  • Wait time: in-stock colors shipped in about a week. Custom colors took 8 to 12 weeks.
  • The install is hard work. One owner, an engineer who fixes his own stuff, said it really tested his patience. Expect lots of pulling and tugging, and you'll need to remove the seat belt bolt, which is very tight. Leaving the covers in the sun first makes them easier to stretch.
  • Folds from the packaging relax over a few weeks. Retighten the straps under the seats after 2 or 3 weeks.
  • Heated seats feel weaker through the extra layers, according to several owners.
  • One owner who used cheaper Clazzio vinyl covers in a previous Toyota said they held up well with a 5 and 6 year old.

Protective covers: for kids, dogs, and work

About $200 to $350

These aren't trying to look like leather. They're made to keep dirt, hair, and spills off your seats.

  • Covercraft SeatSaver: tough, waterproof fabric made for the 2019 to 2024 RAV4. About $220 to $345 per row.
  • Rough Country neoprene: front and rear set for 2019 to 2025, about $210 to $225.
  • Cheap leather-look covers like EKR on Amazon are popular, but quality is hit or miss. One Prime SE owner was sent the wrong covers twice.
  • Check that the cover matches your exact trim. Hybrid and gas seats can be different.
Airbags and seat covers. The front seats have side airbags built into the outer edge of the seatback. Only buy covers made for the RAV4 that say they work with side airbags. The front passenger seat also has a sensor that decides whether to turn the passenger airbag on. If the "AIR BAG OFF" light comes on with an adult sitting there after you add a cover, take the cover off and have a dealer check it.
Have cooled seats? A solid cover will block most of the air coming through the perforations. If you have cooled seats, look for perforated covers, or go with Katzkin, which offers perforated leather.

Buddy's take

Keeping a fabric RAV4 for years? Katzkin is the real upgrade. Spend your effort picking the installer, not the color. A shop that does work for several dealers and will show you finished cars is worth paying a bit more for.

Leasing, or want to keep the original seats? Clazzio gets you most of the look for about a third of the price, and the factory seats stay like new underneath.

Already have SofTex? It's easy to clean and wears well, so most owners leave it alone.

Still shopping? If you want leather-style seats, it's usually simpler to buy an XLE Premium or higher than to add them later. If you want real leather, buy the trim you like and add Katzkin through the dealer before you take delivery.
