Setting up a RAV4 for a dog: crates that fit, seat covers, cargo liners, barriers and ramps

Which dog crates fit in each RAV4 by year, which crates and harnesses are actually crash-test certified, and how to protect the seats and the cargo area from hair, claws and spills.

So a 42 inch crate won't fit in a RAV4 with the back seats up. But an intermediate size kennel, about 30 to 34 inches long, fits if you turn it sideways. On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid, the cargo floor is 40 inches deep and 39.4 inches wide between the wheel wells. The height at the lowest point is 34.5 inches. The 2026 RAV4's cargo floor is shorter (37.8 inches deep) and lower (32.1 inches at the lowest point). And the 2021 to 2025 RAV4 Prime's floor sits higher, so on a 2026 or a Prime, check your crate's height first.

Now when it comes to crash testing, the Center for Pet Safety has certified a few crates. They include the Gunner G1 kennel in Small, Medium and Intermediate, the Lucky Duck Lucky Kennel in Medium, Intermediate and Large. It has also certified the Sleepypod Clickit Sport and Clickit Range harnesses. The Center for Pet Safety hasn't certified any dog barrier, hammock, seat cover or ramp. And Ruff Land kennels aren't on its certified list.

Something to note is that Toyota's manuals give no strength rating for the RAV4's cargo hooks. No RAV4 has a pet or "dog mode" for the air conditioning. And Toyota's US accessory store sells no RAV4 dog barrier.

Quick picks

RAV4 cargo measurements that decide which crate fits

So before you buy a crate, the three numbers that matter are how deep the cargo floor is, how wide it is between the wheel wells, and how tall the space is at its lowest point. The wheel wells are the humps on each side of the cargo area that cover the back wheels, and they're the narrowest spot.

RAV4 years and powertrainCargo floor depth behind the back seatWidth between the wheel wells (widest)Height at the lowest point (tallest)
2019 to 2025 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid40.0 in39.4 in (59.0 in)34.5 in (36.6 in)

2026 RAV4 Plug-in HybridToyota doesn't publish itToyota doesn't publish itToyota doesn't publish it

Now basically, the back seat leans back, so the cargo area is deeper at the floor than at the top. One UK owner measured their 2024 RAV4 Hybrid at about 39 inches deep at the floor, but only 30 to 31 inches deep at the top. So a tall crate pushed up against the seatback loses depth along its top edge. That's the main reason turning a crate sideways usually works better in a RAV4.

And something worth knowing is that the cargo floor has two heights. Toyota lists a two-height deck board as standard on the 2020 to 2025 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid and the 2022 to 2025 RAV4 Prime. Cars.com says the 2026 floor adjusts too. So for a tall crate, put the deck board in its low position to gain height. The deck board also flips over to a hard resin side that wipes clean after a wet dog, which I cover in my RAV4 hidden features guide.

Keep in mind that Toyota's manual says not to stack anything higher than the seatbacks, or put anything on top of the cargo cover. Most intermediate kennels stand 23 to 30 inches tall. No published measurement gives the height from the cargo floor to the cargo cover, or the size of the liftgate opening, for any RAV4 year. So there's no published number for whether a given crate fits under the cargo cover.

I go through cargo space in more detail, including strollers and suitcases, in my RAV4 family size guide and my guide to what fits in a RAV4.

Which dog crates fit in a RAV4, by year

So here's how the most common travel kennels line up against those measurements. When the table says "on paper," that's the math from Toyota's measurements, not a fit test in a real RAV4. The only owner fit report for a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 is the Ruff Land Intermediate, which I explain under the table.

On paper, it fits lengthwise with the 60 or the 40 side of the back seat folded down.Doesn't fit with the back seats up

So the one real owner fit report comes from a RAV4World member with a 2019 or newer RAV4. They have a Ruff Land Intermediate crate with a front door and a side door, and they say it fits sideways in the cargo area with the back seats up. They strap it down to the cargo hooks.

And if you like Ruff Land, something to note is that the Intermediate and Large kennels come in a SlantBack version. Basically, the back of the kennel is slanted so it can sit closer to a seatback that leans back, which the RAV4's does. Ruff Land doesn't publish the SlantBack's measurements on the product page, so how much room it saves isn't measured.

Now Gunner says a snug kennel is better for travel than a roomy one, and in Gunner's sizing guide it says "the less wasted interior space the better." So don't buy bigger than your dog needs just to give them room.

Which dog crates and harnesses are actually crash tested

So the Center for Pet Safety is a nonprofit that crash-tests pet travel products. A product that passes its tests is listed as "CPS Certified." Because the Center for Pet Safety is independent of the makers, its list is the one I'd trust over a maker's own claim.

These are the crates and harnesses on the Center for Pet Safety's certified list, as of October 15, 2026.

The Center for Pet Safety's full certified list also has a couple more kennels, another harness and some carriers for small pets.

Now there are a few dog travel products that say "crash tested" but aren't on the Center for Pet Safety's list. Ruffwear calls its Load Up Dog Car Harness ($99.99 on October 15, 2026, some sizes sold out) a crash tested harness, and Ruffwear did that testing itself. Ruff Land's pages talk about the kennels absorbing impact, and its blog has owners' accident stories, but Ruff Land doesn't claim a crash test or a certification. So those are the makers' own claims, not independent test results.

How to tie a dog crate down in a RAV4

So Toyota's manuals don't describe tie-down rings in the RAV4's cargo area. What they describe are cargo hooks that fold up. Toyota's 2019 to 2025 manuals call them "cargo hooks" and say to "raise the hook to use. The cargo hooks are provided for securing loose items." The 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid manuals say the same thing, and they label two kinds: an "upper hook (utility hook)" and a "lower hook."

Something to note is that no Toyota manual gives a strength rating for the RAV4's cargo hooks. Toyota only says they're for "securing loose items." And the 2026 RAV4's upper utility hook is a hook for hanging bags, not a tie-down point. Toyota also says to always fold the cargo hooks back down when you're not using them, to avoid injury.

Now if you're using a Gunner kennel, Gunner says its own tie-down straps are "the only ones that we recommend for 5 Star Crash Test certified safety." The Gunner Tie-Down Strap Kit was $90 to $110 in black or blaze orange on October 15, 2026, depending on the strap length, and $100 to $120 in Mossy Oak camo. Gunner also has a 44 second video called How to Secure Your Dog Kennel To A SUV.

And one more setup that owners use is a crate on the back seat instead of the cargo area. A RAV4World owner whose kids are grown straps their crate on the back seat with two seat belts and a strap. That's an owner's setup, though, not something Toyota or the Center for Pet Safety tells you to do.

Dog seat covers and hammocks that leave the car seat buckles reachable

So a dog hammock is a cover that clips to the front and back headrests and makes a sling across the whole back seat. Basically, it keeps the dog from falling into the footwells. But if it covers the whole back seat, it also covers the seat belt buckles and the LATCH anchors. The LATCH anchors are the metal bars in the seat crease that a car seat clips onto.

So if you have a car seat on one side, I'd go with a cover sized for just one side of the split back seat, on the dog's side only. That way the car seat sits directly on the RAV4's own seat, with no part of a pet cover under it. And as I said in my road trip guide, a hammock only really works when there's no car seat on that side.

On a 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid, keep the battery cooling vent clear. Basically, the vent that cools the hybrid battery is at the front of the right side of the back seat base. The 2021 to 2024 RAV4 Prime has a similar cooling vent there. Toyota's 2019 to 2025 RAV4 Hybrid manuals and 2021 to 2024 Prime manuals say not to block that vent with anything, such as a seat cover. So tuck the seat cover so the vent grille still shows. I explain where the vent is and what dog hair does to it in my hybrid battery check guide.

And if your RAV4 has heated back seats, turn the seat heat off under a dog cover. Toyota's 2026 RAV4 Hybrid manual says "Do not cover the seat with a blanket or cushion when using the seat heater," and a thick pet cover counts.

Now keep the dog out of the front passenger seat, because of the front airbag. I cover that in my road trip guide. A dog on the front passenger seat also sets off the passenger seat belt chime, which I explain in my RAV4 beeps guide.

Cargo liners for dogs, by RAV4 year

So for a dog, the most useful thing a cargo liner can do is cover the back of the back seat as well as the floor. Basically, that's where claws scratch when a dog stands up or turns around. The Toyota tray, Ruff Rugs, Canvasback and the 4Knines liner all cover the seatback. The Husky cargo liner covers just the floor.

Now for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4, the Toyota Cargo Tray is the one I'd look at first, because it covers the seatbacks, and it's the cheapest RAV4-specific liner on this page that does. One owner says theirs came with a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid Limited. Keep in mind that some Toyota dealer parts sites only offer in-store pickup on Toyota trays. And a 2026 fit for the Toyota Cargo Tray isn't confirmed.

And if you have a big dog, the Ruff Rugs liner is made for dogs. One RAV4World owner with a large lab chose it because the vinyl is the same on both sides and wipes clean. Another owner wished the Ruff Rugs liner had side protectors, so if the side panels matter to you, the Canvasback with the $70 side add-on covers those.

For the bumper, the WeatherTech BumperTopper is made for the 2019 to 2025 RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid and Prime, and it sticks on the top of the bumper with adhesive strips. The BumperTopper for the 2025 RAV4 was $69.95 on WeatherTech's site on October 15, 2026. The 4Knines liner's bumper flap does a similar job without sticking anything to the paint.

Dog barriers for the RAV4, and whether they hold in a hard stop

So the honest answer is that no dog barrier sold for the RAV4 in the US has independent crash test results, and the Center for Pet Safety hasn't certified any barrier. A crash-tested crate that's strapped down is the only dog setup with independent test results. Toyota's US accessory store sells no RAV4 dog barrier either, so every option is from another maker.

Basically, as one RAV4World poster points out, a real cargo barrier is built to hold back cargo in a crash and carries a load rating label. Most dog barriers are only built to stop the dog climbing over the seat. None of the RAV4 dog barriers on this page publishes a load rating.

And one owner's worry is that the RAV4's back seatback isn't strong enough to hold back a big dog's weight in a crash. That's one owner's opinion, and Toyota doesn't publish a number for it. But Toyota does say not to stack cargo higher than the seatbacks, for the same kind of reason.

So ultimately, a barrier is good for keeping the dog in the cargo area on a normal drive. But if you want a setup with crash test results, a certified crate tied down with the maker's straps is the way to go.

Dog Barriers for RAV4 Prime Reviewed, from GoldenK9Campers, 5.5 minutes.

Daryl from GoldenK9Campers tries three dog barriers in their RAV4 Prime with two golden retrievers, and gives an honest verdict on each one.

  • The mesh seat barrier: They say a lightweight mesh barrier didn't stop the dog panting into the center console.
  • The barrier hung on the front seats: They say a barrier hung on the back of the front seats moved and kinked every time they changed the seat position.
  • The WeatherTech Pet Barrier: They like that it stands on rubber feet against the headliner, so it doesn't care where the seats are. They fitted it behind the front seats so the dogs get the whole cargo area, and it spans the panoramic moonroof.
  • Where the WeatherTech Pet Barrier fell short for them: They found it light plastic. The dog knocked it loose at least twice, and on a trip to Phoenix a hard brake sent the dog into it, and it came loose and chipped. They planned to switch to a taller steel barrier.

Dog ramps and steps for the RAV4 hatch

So Toyota doesn't publish how high the RAV4's cargo floor is off the ground. One owner of a 2020 RAV4 says their ramp works for "the 29" height" of their cargo area. So plan on roughly 29 to 30 inches for a 2019 to 2025 RAV4, and measure your own if you can. No one has published a number for the 2026 RAV4 or the Prime.

Now for the back doors, something to note is that most ramps are about 14 inches wide or wider. A RAV4World owner found those ramps don't fit the narrow back door opening, so that RAV4World owner uses free-standing pet steps at the back door instead. A 2022 RAV4 owner on Toyota Nation had the same problem with a ramp at the side door. And a tip from that Toyota Nation thread is to lay a broom handle from the ground to the door sill. That shows you how long a ramp would need to be.

And something worth keeping in mind, from a RAV4World owner with an 11 year old St Bernard, is that "whatever you select, your pup needs to actually use it."

If you're the one lifting and loading, you can also set a lower opening height for the power liftgate, so it's easier to reach. I explain how in my power liftgate guide.

Keeping the dog cool in a RAV4

So no RAV4 from 2019 to 2026 has a pet mode or a "dog mode" that keeps the air conditioning running for a dog. None of Toyota's RAV4 manuals mention one.

And Toyota's own manual warns against leaving a pet in the car. In the 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid manual, Toyota says "Do not leave children, people who need assistance, or pets inside the vehicle. The system may turn off automatically and the interior temperature may become high or low, resulting in heat stroke, dehydration or hypothermia."

Basically, every RAV4 also shuts itself off after about an hour in Park. I go through how that works on the Hybrid in my power outlet and camping guide, but that's for you sitting in the car, not for leaving a dog.

Now what does help is cooling the car down before the dog gets in. If your RAV4 has remote start, you can cool the cabin before the dog gets in. I cover which RAV4s have remote start in my key fob remote start guide. And keep in mind that the rear seat reminder only watches whether a back door was opened. It doesn't sense a dog, which I explain in my RAV4 hidden features guide.

How to get dog hair, spilled milk and car-sick smells out of a RAV4, the way Toyota says

So Toyota's manual has its own cleaning rules, and they matter more on a Hybrid than you'd think.

Now putting that together, here's the order I'd follow.

  1. Pull the dog hair out of the carpet weave with a rubber brush or a pet hair detailing tool, then vacuum.
  2. For spilled milk or car sickness, use a foaming carpet cleaner. Rub it in with overlapping circles and wipe it dry, without pouring water on.
  3. Leave the doors open so the carpet and seats dry out.

And after a hairy season, it's worth checking the hybrid battery cooling filter on a RAV4 Hybrid. I explain how in my hybrid battery check guide.

Buddy's take

So ultimately, if you have a medium or large dog, an intermediate kennel turned sideways is the crate that fits a RAV4 with the back seats up. And if you have a 2026 RAV4, check the crate's height first. If you want crash test results, a certified crate like the Gunner G1 Intermediate with Gunner's straps is the one I'd go with. But otherwise, a single-side seat cover, a liner that covers the seatbacks and a light ramp go a long way. So hopefully this helps you set up your RAV4 for your dog. And for the rest of my dog gear list, see my most recommended accessories.
