Dash cams that can actually read license plates

The cameras dash cam testers, installers and RAV4 owners pick when picture quality matters most, plus what to buy if you're worried about being rear-ended or keyed.

The VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH, $349.99, is the top pick. It was named by six of the eight groups in the research, including the testers who check plate footage frame by frame. If your worry is being rear-ended and then blamed, get the VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH, $409.99, because its rear camera is 4K instead of 2K. No dash cam reads every plate at night, and none of the testers could reliably read the plates of oncoming cars. We haven't tested these cameras ourselves. This page sorts them by who recommends them, from research and dash cam tester reviews read October 12, 2026, with prices from the makers' own sites that day.

VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH

$349.99Most recommended

4K front and 2K rear, both on Sony's STARVIS 2 low-light chips, with HDR that keeps headlights from washing out a reflective plate at night.

  • Who picks it: plate testers, sensor and imaging enthusiasts, hit-and-run claimants, privacy-minded buyers, RAV4 owners and everyday shoppers.
  • Where to buy: $349.99 from VIOFO. When we checked, Amazon had the A229 Pro 2CH for $279.99, with 4.2 stars from 1,530 ratings, so compare before you buy. Add the GPS module ($16.99) if it isn't included.
  • Why: testers say the dual STARVIS 2 sensors and HDR give the best chance of catching a moving plate at night. Privacy-minded buyers like that it saves to a memory card with no forced cloud account or subscription. RAV4 owners who pass on the Fitcamx pick it for better sensors.

2

VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH

$409.99Best rear camera

The same front camera as the A229 Pro, but the rear camera is 4K instead of 2K. The rear camera is the one that has to read the plate of someone who hits you from behind.

  • Keep in mind: VIOFO listed it on August 31, 2026, which is too new for the research to have named it. The pick is based on its rear camera, not on owner reports.

3

VIOFO A139 Pro 2CH

$249.99Value

Testers call it the cheapest camera with top-tier plate reading. It was the first with a 4K STARVIS 2 sensor, and its high recording quality holds up against blur.

  • Keep in mind: the rear camera is only 1080p.

4

Thinkware U3000

$498.99Best parking mode

The premium choice installers and RAV4 owners like. Its radar parking mode uses very little power, which is kinder to the hybrid's small 12-volt battery, and it has no screen glowing at you at night.

  • Keep in mind: testers say VIOFO handles night headlight glare a little better. The rear camera is 2K. It's $498.99 on Amazon, with 4.0 stars from 490 ratings. Thinkware also sells a newer U3000 PRO for $549.99.

VIOFO A119 Mini 2

$159.99Budget, front only

The budget pick sensor enthusiasts and hit-and-run claimants name most: a real 2K STARVIS 2 sensor with HDR, without 4K prices.

  • Keep in mind: it only records the front.

Also named by knowledgeable groups: BlackVue (the DR970X, Elite 9 and DR900X family) as a premium option with cloud backup, and the VIOFO A229 Pro Tele 2CH, $389.99, which adds a 4x zoom lens for reading plates farther away. The BlackVue Elite 9 2CH is $518.99 and the DR970X 2CH LTE Plus II is $540.99 from BlackVue. Buy the Tele from VIOFO. Sources: DashCamTalk on the Elite 9, DR970X comparison, VIOFO telephoto testing.

Vantrue or VIOFO?

Vantrue's best cameras use the same Sony STARVIS 2 chips as the top VIOFOs, and side-by-side tests on DashCamTalk found them competitive, not clearly worse. Vantrue just gets talked about less by the expert groups.

CameraPriceCamerasWhat testers found
Vantrue S1 Pro Max 4K + 4K$249.994K front, 4K rearSame Sony chip setup as the $409.99 A229 Ultra. Sharper than the 2K VIOFO A229 Plus, but blockier in shadows.
Vantrue Nexus 4 Pro S$359.994K front, 2.5K rear, 1080p insideIn one test against the S1 Pro Max and VIOFO A139 Pro, it gave the cleanest image with HDR and its PlatePix sharpening turned on.
VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH$349.994K front, 2K rearMore natural-looking footage. The pick most expert groups name.

If you're rear-ended and then blamed

Get the VIOFO A229 Ultra 2CH, $409.99, for its 4K rear camera. Here's what the footage needs to show, and what to add to make sure it does:

A cheaper option with a 4K rear camera is the Vantrue S1 Pro Max 4K + 4K, $249.99. One person in the research said a 4K VIOFO's footage covered a $6,500 hit-and-run claim, and another said even a 1080p Rexing V1P helped dispute a false claim (thread).

Parking mode and keying

Most good dash cams have a parking mode that starts recording when they sense motion or a bump. The weak spot is the sides of the car, where keying happens. Front and rear cameras usually miss someone standing at a door. These cover the sides better:

Two things to know. Phone alerts like Tesla's need a camera with cell service (BlackVue, Thinkware or the Vantrue Nexus 5S) and usually a monthly data plan. And parking mode runs off the hybrid's small 12-volt battery, so use a hardwire kit with a low-voltage cutoff, or a separate dash cam battery pack.

Buddy's take

For most RAV4 owners, get the VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH and add the GPS module.

If being rear-ended is the worry, spend the extra $60 on the A229 Ultra for the 4K rear camera.

If you'll use parking mode, use a hardwire kit with a low-voltage cutoff so the hybrid's small 12-volt battery doesn't go flat.
